That he hadn’t seen or talked to his brother since Christmas, that Michael didn’t answer his phone calls, that he left the house as soon as Carmen showed up? Is he supposed to stand in front of the people who knew Michael best and beg for their attention, their forgiveness, because he couldn’t beg Michael anymore?

She lets the alcohol pull her apart until she is nothing more than an unthinking, unmoving blob of a being melting against the booth of a bar in space.
Kara has lost her home, her family, and herself. A dog, a cousin and a girl try to find her in the pieces that remain.

This is a fallacy that has led many a sturdy Man and stout Dwarf into a very deep, very regretful slumber. Hobbits live lives centered on the celebration of the senses. Their bodies are built like high-performance furnaces, fueled by seven meals a day and a metabolism that operates at a frequency most other races would find exhausting. To a Hobbit, a pint of ale is essentially liquid bread, and they consume it with the same casual frequency that a Dwarf might consume water from a mountain spring.

Gimli spotted Tauriel from time to time, though he’d never spoken to her. He’d no wish to. He’d resented her presence for so long, glaring every time he saw her, biting back the urge to shout at her to go away, to leave his people be. Gimli wanted to rage and fight, to demand she leave his family alone; they were his, not hers. Never hers. Never an Elf’s. He’d so badly wanted to take her to task for besmirching his beloved cousin’s honour even now, so long after Kíli was gone.
He’d been furious every time he saw her at Kíli’s grave; it felt like she was stealing his time with his kin, for he could not even visit Fíli or Thorin while she was with Kíli. Not comfortably. He couldn’t talk to them with her there, so he always stormed off in anger and waited for her to leave. He was always happy to see the back of her.
Until now, until now that he finally understood. Now he was sorry to have missed her.

When all is said and done, the Fellowship have tombs to visit in Erebor. Gimli has a lot to reflect on regarding his lost cousins.
In particular, the romance he's only recently come to understand between Kíli and Tauriel.

And Kíli had grown – sharper, taller, faster. Louder. There was more of him now: more noise, more light, more life. He had become someone unrecognizable from the quiet boy he had once been.

Bilbo didn't flinch. He didn't recoil from the King’s wrath. Instead, his face set into a mask of fierce, maternal indignation. He stepped forward, poking a finger directly into the center of Thorin’s fur-lined tunic.
"Since they started calling me 'Uncle' too!" Bilbo yelled back, his voice echoing with a finality that silenced the room.

The twins scream and jump to their feet. Grunkle Ford is standing right behind them. Dipper will never understand how such a tall man can sneak up on you like that. Ford has some sticks and leaves in his hair and his hands clasped behind his back. His skin is still faintly tanned from his months on the Stan' o War II which is a good look on him. He actually looks younger than he did three years ago. There is a twinkle in his eyes that has been there ever since Mabel and Dipper fell out of the bus and right into his and Grunkle Stan’s arms.
"Are you two being mischievous already?" he asks with a laugh and leans over so he can see what they have been staring at. "The summer has barely starte-" He breaks off and just stares. "Oh my."
"It's my fault but it was an accident!" Dipper blurts.
"Well, my boy. If you had done this on purpose we would have even bigger problems."
