Q leans forward, hands folded on the table in front of him, which appears to be a tell that he's about to be serious. "I think if you only live in the field, you're less likely to remember there's a reason to live when you're out of it."

    Summary

There is something about Bond that puzzles Q to no end, and he wants an excuse to figure him out. He wants time and resources to fiddle with 007, the inner workings of whom look to be obscure and possibly very messy, until he’s dismantled him completely and understands what makes him tick.

Of course Bond is oblivious and also needy, but has no skill at communicating what he wants. Except with dumb little gifts. Which is infuriating.

    Summary

It begins and ends, much like in another life, for love of a woman.

Voldemort never faced a choice between two prophesied boys, because one of them was born a girl. A girl, he believed, wasn’t much of a threat to a wizard like him.*

*this decision aged poorly, in entirely new ways.

Or: Ivy Potter grew up surrounded by love, with a predilection for chaos instead of heroism, while Neville Longbottom had a raw scar stretched across his forehead gifting him a serpent's tongue. And just like that, a new fate, an old fate, is sealed.

There will be no resurrection for James Bond this time.

Weeks after he died on Safin's island, Bond's body, now deemed safe from Herakles, is returned to London. Bond's escort is someone wholly unexpected, and one who ultimately forces Q to acknowledge things about himself and MI6 that he'd been wrestling with for a rather long time, but particularly since the Herakles debacle.

“He did my job for me, killing his master,” Bond said. “He got around his feet and tripped him down a flight of stairs. Leaving him to get blown up with the rest of them seemed a churlish way to repay him.”

The cat chirruped agreeably, and washed a paw. Despite being brought from south Ireland in a bag, the feline looked well-cared for.

“You brought me a cat. A murder cat, owned by your villain du jour.”

In which Q is brought offerings of murder cats, keeps losing his pens to a certain kleptomaniacal agent, and is generally oblivious to/confused by Bond's attempts at catching his attention.
