A SEQUEL TO BLACK COFFEE! AND IT IS TWICE AS LONG??? WOWS
Black Coffee was how Calhoun had a bad time in the past, was having a bad time currently in Black Mesa, and because we know that HL2 is right around the corner: you know he will have a bad time in the future.
And this! This is him having that bad time. A well crafted and immersive chunk of writing, for better or for worse-- I mean, don't expect yourself to be in a particularly chummy mood afterwards. There is no sunshine, and the butterflies have been extinct for twenty years.
Damn. Really knocks you on the ass if you're there for it. Fine work.

Summary
“Barney!” Gordon says. “It’s me! Gordon! From Black Mesa!”
Barney’s mouth is a hard line as he casts his eyes sideways. When he speaks, his voice is soft and bitter as black coffee from the old breakroom. “Where’ve you been, Gordon?”
