Summary
Lance gave up the chance to make a difference by giving up the Red Lion. He gave up his chance to be a hero. What he wants now is just to go home. He'll protect Earth and his family from the Galra as best he can when he gets there. That's his top priority now.
And sure, he stole the opportunity to make this decision from Keith, and maybe that's not fair.
But whatever. If Keith was going to make the wrong choice, Lance wasn't going to give him one.

One of the mer fics that do a rly good job of staying conscious of an underwater environment. A lot of writers end up drifting (heh) back to pedestrian movement styles bound to a single plane – no shade; it's a hard thing to stay mindful of (read: me writing vampires and constantly writing daylit scenes...)!! Just, all the more reason to praise when someone pulls it off :)

Lance blinks.
“I’m not an idiot,” he tries to say, but a fit of coughing comes out instead. His whole body shakes with the force of it and the weight on his stomach bounces with each cough.
“Of course you’re an idiot. What else do you call someone who doesn’t’ want to die but jumps off a cliff anyway?”

After suffering an unimaginable loss, Lance struggles to find the will to keep going. That’s when he meets Keith, a mermaid who either wants to save him or kill him. Lance can’t figure out which, and he’s afraid he might not really care.
Dark themes, major character death (kind of, except not really, but also kind of), suicidal thoughts, Keith may or may not be evil…
