“No, no, just listen! You're nervous about dating because you’re never been on a date with a guy. But I’m a guy, and I’ve been dating Max for like four years. Or, well, two, or maybe three if you count— the point is, a long time. I have tons of experience, and you won’t have to worry about embarrassing yourself since it’s just me. It’s perfect.”
Will’s brain crashes like an Atari unplugged mid-game. “Uh, what? What are you talking about?”
Lucas stops Will, pulling him off to the side to avoid the stream of sixth-period-bound students. He’s completely sincere. “Go out with me,” he says. Before Will’s jaw can make contact with the floor, Lucas amends, “I mean, not actually, but you can practice with me. I’ll show you what dating is like, and you can practice dating a guy."
Hawkins, senior year. When Will mentions how nervous he is about the prospect of dating, Lucas is quick to lend a hand. It's what any good friend would do, right?

Will raises his eyebrows. “Is that why you came in here?” he repeats, looking back down at the blue flannel. “To ask me about the weather in Lenora?”
“Kind of,” Mike says, and then, “well no, not about the weather specifically. I just– I wanted to talk to you.”
“Oh.” And Will looks a lot more surprised at this, actually, than the idea that Mike might have just wanted to come to his room to make small talk about unseasonably frigid California winters. “Okay. What about?”
“Anything.” The response is embarrassingly immediate. “Everything. I don’t know. I missed you.”
Hawkins, 1986. The world is ending, there are too many people in Mike's house, and to top it all off, he and Will have some things to talk through.

“Come swimming with me,” he murmurs, voice dipping, soft and coaxing. “Just for a little while.”
Mike snorts, even as his heart stutters. “Stop trying to siren me.”
Will’s mouth drops into an immediate pout, exaggerated and unfairly effective. “I’m not.”
“You are,” Mike insists, though his fingers have slowed in Will’s hair, lingering now instead of working. “You always do this.”
“I don’t always do this,” Will says, leaning closer, just enough that Mike can feel the cool damp of him, smell the salt and something faintly metallic beneath it. “Sometimes I just want you to come with me. Why won't you?”
or, Mermaid Will just really REALLY wants to go for a completely normal swim with pirate Mike, and Mike is easily distracted.

Summary
“Does- does your mom know?” Mike asks, quieter now. Will shakes his head. Mike’s throat tightens. “I think my mom’s gonna call her,” he murmurs, even though he’s not totally sure. It feels like something she would do. Mike kind of wants her to, too.
Will curls in tighter at that, like the words themselves hurt. “Dad’s gonna get mad again,” he whispers. “I don’t want him to get mad.”
Mike’s nose scrunches up, his eyes burning. It feels like crying, but different. Hotter, sharper, like it’s trying to claw its way out of him instead of spill. “He hurts you,” Mike spits, voice wobbling despite how hard he tries to keep it steady. “He shouldn’t do that. That’s- that's not allowed. That’s bad.”
or, miwi werehere. Mike just wants Will to be safe, and the safest place he can think of is his den.

Summary
Point was, Mike Wheeler liked to be needed.
And Will Byers?
Well…
Will swallows, eyes focused pointedly on Mike’s long, slender fingers. The way they twist and they pull, fixing the broken strap to Will’s backpack.
Will Byers loved when Mike fixed things for him.
It was becoming a problem.
He didn’t mean to start doing it, but it just… happened. Maybe he was using Mike’s kindness against him, but it was difficult not to, and Will couldn’t feel too badly about it when Mike looked down at him with lidded eyes, one hand dragging up along Will’s side, voice sweet. “Better?”
“Yeah,” Will murmurs, grabbing the bag with trembling fingers. “Yeah, it’s better.”
Or, Will comes up with a plan that could benefit the both of them. Mike gets to be a hero in every day life, and Will? He gets to have Mike's attention.
