Summary
Kaveh skids to a halt right in the middle of the room.
He thought he might find Al-Haitham here—it’s his favorite room after his bedroom—but he didn’t expect to find him sprawled out on the middle divan, legs stretched out leisurely and his head lolled to one side. His eyes are closed, his facial muscles so relaxed his mouth’s fallen open a sliver. Kaveh can see the pink of his tongue.
In his arms he’s cradling Mehrak.
Kaveh, Al-Haitham and Mehrak may not be the most typical family—but they are a family nonetheless. And, surprisingly enough, it turns out that having a semi-sentient toolbox as a pseudo-daughter can do wonders for a broken relationship.

“I’m sure every carpenter in the city is going to be busy these next few days. Even with all my connections, I might not be able to get someone sooner, especially since repairs for the Akademiya will take priority. It might be a while until we can fix the roof.”
“That’s fine. I’ll just take your bed in the meantime.” Alhaitham flops onto the bed.
Kaveh’s eye twitches as he grits his teeth. “Well, I was going to offer you my bed but—
“Great, glad we are in agreement.”
“Wait! What about me?! Where am I supposed to sleep?!”
Alhaitham pats the empty side of the bed. “Plenty of room for the two of us to share.”
After the events that lead to the burning of Irminsul, Alhaitham and Kaveh are left to clean up the mess left behind. Their roof is torn, several of their belongings have been knocked over, and worst of all, Alhaitham’s room is currently under unlivable conditions, forcing them to share Kaveh’s room for the time being: including the bed.
It’s not just the house that needs some fixing however.

He flips another page. He hopes Kaveh is too drunk to realize he’s not reading. “You just told me about your escapades. Am I to believe you’re secretly a virgin?”
“No, that’s not what I mean. I haven’t had good sex in… I don’t know how long. It’s all just… fucking. I want something deeper than that. I want someone to make love to me. Is that so hard?”
There are a lot of things Alhaitham could say to this. Something snarky; something supportive. He weighs his options.
But maybe Kaveh’s alcohol laden breath is infecting Alhaitham’s head, too, because what he says is a very cryptic, “Maybe you’re not looking in the right place.”

"We do?" Kaveh instantly scoured his brain for something he might have forgotten — a dinner party? A hangout? Who was coming? He couldn't remember. Wasn't today a Thursday? He cocked his head. "Am I forgetting something?"
"Yes."
Scoffing, Kaveh poked Alhaitham's cheek. "Care to elaborate?"
"I'm waiting to see how long it'll take you to remember."

Grand sage Alhaitham’s eyes look cold and piercing. “Lord Kaveh Bay,” he says flatly. In his hands, a small notebook appeared, noting down all of Kaveh’s misdemeanors. “Illicit behavior. Trespassing in a restricted area.”
“It’s not trespassing! My… supplier left his goods at this address, I was simply picking them up!”
“Import and distribution of prohibited goods. Sale of prohibited goods without a permit.”
“I haven’t sold anything yet! Now, you’re just making things up…!”
“Public nuisance. Shall I add obstruction of justice to that list?”
“Personal use!” Kaveh blurts out. “The contents of the box are for personal use only! Not for sale!”
