Summary
Doctors come in and out. There isn't much more they can do. She's yelled and screamed and cursed about it. Didn't change anything. They did what they could. All she can do is wait. Fucking useless.
He's lost so much blood. She wanted to give him some, but they're not the same blood type. Of course they're not. Maybe they would be if she were his daughter, but she's not. She's not.
He's lost so much blood. So much blood running through her fingers. Ellie wipes her hands on her jeans. It doesn't help.
He's stilI. Too still. But his chest lifts and falls, and that has to be enough.

Summary
In retrospect, Joel will decide that he jinxed them in not going after Ellie right after their fight, in leaving things between them broken and unsteady. It’s like he was asking for it, really, flirting with the idea of something going catastrophic before they had a chance to make amends.
In the moment, though, he can only focus on getting into place to try and buy enough time to make it up to her later.
Picking off infected after infected after infected from his perch on top of the herbalist shop, Joel tells himself a lie he desperately wants to believe: Ellie listened to instructions and locked herself in a cellar with the other kids. She–for once–did the smart thing and not the Ellie thing, which usually involves something well-intentioned and brave but wildly out of the scope of what a teenager should be trying to handle. She’ll bitch and moan about missing the action later, but the greatest threat to her right now will be sharing air with small children, the petri dishes of-
When he spots a familiar ponytail bobbing and weaving through the riot of bodies in the street, he decides in an instant that he is going to kill her himself.

Summary
“It doesn’t matter,” she says. “He - he’s mine.”
Gil scrutinizes her for a long minute; she tries not to squirm beneath his attention, beneath the heat of his appraisal. She knows what he sees: an impetuous child, a runaway with muddy boots, another girl awash in the great violence of their world. She squares her shoulders, sticks out her chin, and he softens.
“He’s very lucky to have you,” Gil says, and that’s that, but his words stick with Ellie long after he’s gone, after the nursing staff has turned them out for the night. Ellie follows Maria and Tommy home and thinks over and over again how luck has nothing to do with it; luck is so scarce in this world, rarer even than love. Ellie hasn’t seen the likes of it in years. No, it was never luck that drew her and Joel together, once upon a time. It was something greater entirely.

Summary
“He took my dad from me,” Abby says, looking down. Her jaw clenches for a moment. “He has to pay for that.”
In her mildly panicking mind, she considers it, considers what she would do if she was in the same room as someone who took Joel from her.
She’d kill them, she knows at once, not even needing to think about it. She’d kill them without a second thought, and there’s not a goddamn force on this earth that could stop her.
It’s this that lets her know that Abby Anderson has to die.
