Summary
“Look over here! Big smile! This is the best day of your life!” The photographers told Ilya and the two standing next to him what they wanted. He was the first overall draft pick. He was getting out of Russia. He should be happy.
But the two boys standing next to him didn’t deserve to be in the top with him. No one matched his skill level. No one except-
Ilya stopped that thought before he could finish it. There was no one who could match him anymore.
He pretended to be present as his dad schmoosed with the executives of his new team. And that night, he tried to chase away the nightmares by pushing himself in the hotel gym. As he sat panting on the floor downing his water bottle when he was done, he couldn’t help but wish there was someone in the gym with him. Someone he was pushing to be better and was doing the same for him. Someone like… Someone like-~
When Shane Hollander dies due to an accident at world juniors, Ilya is haunted by his death in more ways than one.
