“Well,” Samira wipes her eyes furiously, sitting a little taller, more resolute despite the sad truth bubbling beneath her skin, threatening to pull her under. “Then I wish you loved me less, Jack. If it meant I could have you instead of whatever this is, I wish you loved me less.”

Summary
"The first floor is the main level of the hospital—the quiet heart of it all. Easy to access, simple for visitors to reach, and tucked away from foot traffic. Where worried families pace slow circles into the tile, waiting for updates that could potentially shatter them or piece their world back together. Where the gift waits for them, shelves filled with flowers, cards, and teddy bears meant to bring comfort when nothing else can, and down the hall, social workers’ offices sit, ready for difficult moments and hard conversations. Where a small chapel waits nearby, offering a quiet space for visitors to pray—or simply just hope for a miracle.
It’s the ground-level anchor that keeps families tethered to the earth, so stress and grief don’t sweep them away entirely.
It’s also where she and Jack leave their eight-month-old baby each morning, dropping her off at the daycare nursery and heading into another twelve-hour shift that’s made worth it by seeing her smiling face at the end of every day."
Jack needs a reminder of why he keeps coming back, so he heads to the first floor.

Summary
“I’m so tired Jack.” Samira genuinely just wanted to go home and sleep. She knew though that she needed to get clean, but she couldn’t think of anything worse.
“I’ll help, c’mon honey let’s get you home.” Jack wipes her damp face with his thumbs and slides his hand into hers.

Summary
Day 1: First Times
First 'I love you's.
His eyes are heavy-lidded, mouth still slick from their kiss when he says, "God, I love you."
The bubble bursts.
“What?” she breathes.
Nice, pretty, well-adjusted girls—girls who are ready for a relationship—don’t sprint out of the room when someone says I love you. They smile softly, kiss them back, maybe tear up a little (a cute, appropriate, romcom-acceptable amount), and say I love you, too. They certainly do not flee wearing nothing but said person’s boxers like some kind of emotionally stunted bandit that only hits in the morning hours.
Samira is decidedly not a nice, normal girl. She is a panicked, malfunctioning fire alarm of a human being whose brain short‑circuits at the mere suggestion of emotional vulnerability. A girl who hears I love you and responds with the fight‑or‑flight instincts of a cornered raccoon.
