“You should put it back on,” they cut him.
The words slap him in the face, leaving him momentarily in shock.
“W-what?”
He must've misheard that. Kris knows what that'd mean… Kris wouldn't…
He tries steadying his breath.
“The hat,” they clarify, as if the reason Ralsei was so bewildered was because he didn't know what they were referring to. Their tone is as sharp and cold as the rose gold blade of their sword. Something about it doesn't sound right. It's like their voice is coming from everywhere all at once. As if it was trying to drown Ralsei.
In one swift motion, Kris gets up. “You should wear it again.” And it's less of a request and more of a demand.

“S'not your fault that—”
“—I hurt you,” Susie finished. She chewed on the concept, the edges of her voice frantic, her throat thick. “Because you deserved it.”
“Yes.” Kris pressed her hands against their chest. They smiled in a way that failed to be reassuring. Each desperate breath shuddering through their lungs confirmed everything Susie didn't want to know. “S’fine. It’s okay.”
Kris burned like a charred pan straight out of the oven, or an oil fire stoked by liquor. Susie reeled away. “You—you were trying to set me up,” Susie accused, trying to edge words around the chasm opening in her gut. “You were trying to get me to hit you.”
Kris wants Susie to hurt them. They need her to hurt them. Susie isn't as on board with the idea as they are.

“I’m working on it,” Kris says.
Kris has never been witness to a functional relationship, but they'll fight tooth and nail to set their own example.
