Summary
Maybe it all means nothing. Shadowheart doesn’t know, and hasn’t for a long time. All she knows is that the voice of God is silent, and she yearns for its guidance in a form more comprehensible than an intermittent, stabbing pain in her hand.
So maybe she’s tired of feeling empty. Maybe she wants something to fill her in a more definable sense. She’s sick of obscurities, of foggy memories, of always second-guessing her own interpretations.
(“Do not mistake me,” rasps Lae’zel, amidst the celebrations back in camp. “I despise you. But I want to taste you all the same.”)
Well. Memory eludes her, but she's sure she's settled for less in the past.

Summary
“Just when I thought I’d seen the depravity of your kind at its fullest. Stealing a poor dog’s ball?” Shadowheart makes a grab for the ball; Lae’zel tosses it to her other hand, grimacing at the sheen of drool it leaves behind. “For what purpose? Just to ruin the day of a being actually capable of feeling joy?”
“By the hells, Shadowheart, she’s taking the thing for a bloody walk,” Wyll says from his tent.
“A walk,” Shadowheart repeats, crossing her arms. “Why?”
“I assume the animals of this world require some amount of exercise if they’re not to collapse under the weight of their own atrophying muscles,” Lae’zel says. “But you wouldn’t know, would you? Do the disciples of Shar pre-kill their pets so they can skip right to the loss?”
-------------------
Lae'zel starts to take Scratch out for daily walks. Shadowheart's determined to figure out why.

Summary
Lae'zel came looking for a summer’s work, a steady paycheck, and enough open country to disappear into. Jenevelle came because there was nowhere else left to go.
Hired by the wealthy and thoroughly unpleasant Enver Gortash, the two women are sent into the mountains with a herd of sheep, a pair of horses, and strict instructions not to return until the season is over. Jenevelle has never met anyone as proud, hostile, or infuriating as the displaced gith ranch hand she has been forced to call her partner. Lae’zel, meanwhile, has little patience for Jenevelle’s sarcasm, her secrets, or the way she treats every sincere feeling like something to be ashamed of.
But high in the lonely summer pastures, far from the expectations waiting for them below, irritation slowly gives way to companionship... and companionship to something neither woman is prepared for.
Summer, however, cannot last forever.
When they return home, they try their best to continue life as normal. They find new people, build new relationships, and try to start new beginnings. But something keeps drawing them together, whether it's love, fate, or something else; it's hard to tell.

Summary
“Enjoy your fantasy, my liege. But don’t expect me to bow.”
Emerald eyes shoot up to meet with golden pools; hungry and a little mischievous. Lae’zel’s eyes were always fiery and passionate, they always conveyed exactly what emotion she was feeling so long as one looked close enough. A warmth travels across her features, settling at the pointed tips of the half-elf’s ears, she hadn’t realized the warrior was still watching her.
