Longshen bent to pick up his wawa and held it close once more. Then he lifted his gaze to the moonlit sky outside, where the last traces of fire still shimmered and faded.
His voice, when it came, was cracked and soft. “Gege, I need you by my side.”
A trembling smile broke through his tears. “Please….come back to me”
The night did not answer. But Longshen rose anyway. And for the first time in a long, long while, he walked away from death and toward the world beyond the platform, carrying his wawa against his heart, while above him the last sparks of gold vanished into dawn.
As if fate had finally answered him, his commander returned. But not as the man he once knew. Only a shadow remained.
