Summary
Thorin emerges from his gold sickness to find that the battle was won, but all that mattered was lost. For two years, Thorin reaps the consequences of what his madness wrought: broken relationships, harrowing self-doubt, an isolated kingdom and, worst of all, a missing Hobbit.
Unable to determine whether Bilbo is dead or alive, Thorin is unable to mourn or to move on, tormented by the slim hope that his One has survived. Thorin has nearly accepted that he will live in ignorance for the rest of his life when someone begins to hide Bilbo’s lost keepsakes where Thorin is sure to find them. Suddenly, answers seem within reach.
Companion piece to Catskins (Full disclosure - Bilbo is mentioned frequently, but does not appear until the final chapters).

Summary
Now when their uncle settled himself beside their hearth in the evenings, Fili watched as though through his mother’s eyes. He saw the ember in his uncle’s words, and watched the heat of it spread and catch on the kindling of Kili’s imagination. He watch the sparks flare up in his brother’s face and watched how easy it was for their uncle to set alight his longing for a home they had never known.
