Summary
Jamie was very, very lonely. She found herself explaining Dani’s absence away as her “passing on,” which was only partially true, yet somehow more painful than the full truth.
Regulars at The Leafling were rather curious about Dani’s presence, or lack thereof; some ignorant women saw it as an opening and attempted to fling themselves onto Jamie, whose irate explanation of her wife’s absence turned regular customers into fellow absentees.
She was rather perturbed by how neighbors and former friends saw her. An acquaintance of hers, who’d sensed that something was wrong when she saw Jamie alone, invited her to a ‘support group.’ She really should have expected it when said acquaintance introduced her as another widower.
Jamie hated the intrusive questions and assumptions that came with Dani’s disappearance. She hated the sympathy, and fake-expressive sad faces, and the offers by various psychiatrists to help her, as they said, better adjust to her wife’s passing.
She didn’t see herself as the kind of woman who needed help, and certainly not medicated assistance. She’d find her own path to her city of joy--and that just had to be wherever Dani was.
