    Then it suddenly wasn't and everything he knew about their relationship was turned on its head.
    And he feels stupid for not noticing it all sooner.

    (Or Kaoru is bad with feelings, makes an effort and learns about taking his time because love is hard. And it's even harder when you have to juggle loving your childhood best friend and dealing with the constant haunting presence of his ex-friend.)
