Ben has had this dreadful feeling in his gut ever since he learned how to properly use a shotgun at the young age of twelve. It has clawed and ripped its way up into his throat as the years went by, making itself known no matter how much he attempts to ignore it, leaving him breathless. It's a scratchy and uncomfortable emotion, like insects under his skin, and it just keeps getting more looming and bigger like a weight over his head, over his life. He doesn't know what to do about it anymore either, or if he even knows how to live without it at this point. He's twenty-two and counting when that threat, that emotion, gets more intense like a headache around his skull and a red in his eyes.
He hasn't seen Dean in three years when that headache, that moment in time, explodes like a fever— like a pulse. Suddenly Dean is outside his door trying to find their wretched father and that, Ben realizes, is the focal point in all this pain. It's the start of something, he knows, just doesn't know what. He knows it's something major though, can feel it in his veins, and it blazes like hot coals.
