The disguise Kid had chosen was light -- no mask today. Mostly, he'd sharpened his cheekbones, made his skin two shades darker, and thickened his eyebrows. (Oh, and added a goatee and the distracting edge of a badly done neck tattoo.) The end result wasn't so much Kuroba Kaito at thirty as, perhaps, Kuroba Kaito's once removed yakuza uncle... Or some unrelated stranger who happened to share a passing resemblance with someone else if you squinted the right way, which happened commonly enough as to be worth zero notice.
"Hi, Shinichi! Undercover again?" whispered a cheerful feminine voice in his ear, as two small but strong hands grabbed his upper arm like a vise.

Coda: Kazuha pokes at the box with her index finger, flipping it on another face, and then pries it open the way Gojita-san from the bomb squad handles booby-trapped packages.

Kuroba and Kudo had to be on very good terms if they were a) calling each other 'boyfriend', b) doing cases together and c) on a first name basis. Especially on a first name basis, and in public too, and not even a -kun or a -san to be heard. Heiji tilted his head, frowning a little bit. Either Kudo was suddenly the kind of guy who trusted way fast or they'd known each other a good long while; but last week was the first he'd heard of this Kuroba guy, and damn it but Heiji was Kudo's best friend. "Where'd you guys meet?"
Kuroba grinned again, or more like upped the wattage on the grin that hadn't really left his face in full. "Oh, at a Kid heist."
"Ah, those are fun --" Wait a sec.

"That isn't -- he isn't... a new in-law." A pause, as he felt his way through words he couldn't be sure conveyed what he wanted them to. "Yet. Or ever. Depending how you mean it."
