Summary
“Now remember Dee, you gotta get that sonofabitch right in the heart. If you take a shot, don’t miss because you won’t get a second one.” John popped a magazine of silver bullets into Deanna’s nickel plated handgun before handing it back over to her.
“I know Dad.” Deanna sighed, taking the gun from him. “You’ve told me a thousand times." She ran her fingers across the etched vine design of the barrel before she wrapped her hands tight around its ivory grip, trying to stop their trembling.

Summary
Deanna could hear Sam pacing around the motel room, rapping a book against his thigh.
John had been clear when he told them to stay put that morning. He had to go to the police station to finish up their hunt and they were heading out at first light. It was their sixth day in this ten block town and Deanna was certain Sam was going to climb the walls if he didn't get out of their motel room soon.

Summary
Son of a bitch, Deanna thought as she pulled the strap of her dress over her shoulder.
The little black dress no longer fit. It was too tight in the hips, and Deanna could barely get the zipper past her waist, but she could still zip it up so she hung onto it, unwilling to go out and waste money buying a new one. Deanna loved that dress. She had found it brand new at a Goodwill when she was fourteen; the tag was still on it and everything. Even now, six years and three sizes later, she couldn’t bring herself to throw it away.
