Dick tipped his head back, thumb idly rubbing over the flower design on his mug of coffee. “So,” he started, heart beating in his throat, “you want to be my date?”
Next to him, Wally spat his coffee back into his own Daffy Duck mug, sending hot liquid dribbling down his chin and staining his shirt. Patiently, Dick waited for his best friend (and dare he admit it, crush ) to collect himself. “I feel like there’s context there,” Wally eventually said, still wiping at his mouth and staring forlornly down at his ruined shirt.

Wally pauses just long enough that Dick thinks he’s already hung up, gently though, he adds, “Love you too. Hey, and don’t worry, I’m sure Bruce is around there somewhere.”
Wally hangs up. Dick drops his phone like it’s molten steel. He never told Wally what exactly was bothering him.
There’s another knock on his door, this one far more insistent.
Dick stands on shaking legs. Something is so deeply, terribly wrong.

The car jerks to a stop, Dick clenches his jaw. “Wally,” the tone verges on admonishing. Wally reaches for the car door handle blindly and swings it open as hard as he can. It bounces back and he catches it as he fumbles to unbuckle himself.
His sneakers hit pavement with a smack. Dick’s expression is ire-filled when Wally turns to close the door. He spits out, “Apologize when you know what you did wrong.”
