    I think it makes sense, given AO3 started as a primarily slash archive. There wouldn't be as much use of a Male Characters tag if your characters are male by default.

      I would agree except I did check the usage rate too. "Male Characters" has just under 400 uses. Female Characters, despite being a canonical tag, has less than 3000 uses (excluding subtags). Its largest 2 subtags are Trans Female Character (43k uses), and POV Female Character (17k uses). If you were to do the same with Male Characters, Trans Male Character has 115k uses and POV Male Character has 6k uses.

      People are clearly using the tag despite it not being canonical, and the usage from the rest of the tree if they were set up the same way is on the same level.

        Oh, yeah I should've checked, oopsie. In that case, I can only think maybe it's not been gotten to yet due to the would-be parent having lower numbers than Female Characters? But I don't know anything about wrangling, so 🤷‍♂️
