characters being competent
A collection of works where the characters are actually competent, as they would realistically be in the circumstances that they are in, or with the experience that they have through their story.
This all started because I kept getting frustrated whenever characters are written into the damsel trope a bit too hard, when, within the story, it does not make sense for that character to be.

Red Hood is a criminal, so it doesn't make sense why he would bother dragging Nightwing back to Dick Grayson's apartment and bandaging his potentially deadly gunshot wounds. What makes even less sense is why Hood keeps coming back.
(a.k.a. another "Dick redeems Red Hood with the power of affection" fic but with even less mental stability.)

“Hello Rifleman Jack Cooper” replied BT, optic adjusting as Jack got closer.
“You can just call me Jack if you like” said Jack, leaning on the rails. At this height, he only had to tilt his head back a little to look BT in the optic. “Or Cooper. Either or is fine” finished Jack, shrugging his shoulders.

A sort of sequel to 'Potential'.

Plagg can't actually remember what it feels like to have a holder who admires rather fears him. It's happened before, he knows, because that's how it was in the beginning. That's how it's meant to be. But literal civilizations have sprouted, blossomed, and withered away in the time since Plagg last got to choose his own Black Cat.
Plagg didn't get to choose this newest holder, either, but it's clear they were made for each other. After all, Marinette Dupain-Cheng is a walking catastrophe.

“What are your feelings on the mutant threat?!” one of the reporters shouts, and Steve just looks at him.
“I think anyone threatening mutants should be stopped,” he says calmly, and the swarm of reporters explodes, a dozen camera flashes going off at once.

Just because Sherlock stopped, doesn't mean the Work has to. London is John's city now and he will keep it together with stitching, string, his healing, the food off his table, and sometimes the clothes off his back. John Watson keeps going. He's good at that.

In the sealed scroll he finds a Bingo Book – his own page marking him as an S-class nukenin with flee-on-sight orders.
“Ok. That is definitely different.”
In his head he blames Naruto – even if his number one unpredictable student had been nowhere near him on this mission. When things go this stupidly impossibly wrong it must somehow be the future Hokage’s fault.

Clone Commanders all up and down the hall came awake at the same moment. Some had died in the war. More had lived beyond it.
Bly’s little puddle of vomit didn’t remain alone for long.
Wolffe, of all people, managed to get them moving. He stormed through each hall of sleep tubes, barking at his brothers to straighten up, grab their gear, hurry up and fall in. “You want to save our Jedi? Or sit around crying until the war starts again?”
Swallowing, Bly snagged his personal datapad and joined the growing line.

Summary
The Jedi Council was nervous. The Jedi Council was very, very nervous, so much so that the usual meditation-and-releasing-emotions-into-the-Force shtick had failed and High General Mace Windu had broken out the spotchka.
If anything called for drinks, it was discovering that your whole Order was sitting on a primed thermal detonator - well. More like a million of them.
