"It’s not like amnesia," the doctor said. "Eddie remembers who he is, who you are. He knows you. He remembers his life and likely most of what’s happened to him."
Buck frowned. "Then what's happening?"
"His memories aren't staying in their proper place anymore. He’s struggling to keep them compartmentalized.” She paused as Buck took it in. "His brain isn't signaling clearly when a memory is just a memory anymore. To Eddie ... it feels like it's happening now."

Buck really didn’t know what he did in a past life to deserve this.

The faint crunch of the ice-machine. Pipes settling somewhere in the walls. Some sounds, however, were missing from the regular traffic. Notably, the hum of Eddie’s fan.
Where the fuck was Eddie?

“So, you’re — you’re a doctor, mh?”
The man looks taken aback, his head tilting a little bit, a surprised hum that Eddie feels almost vibrate against his own sternum.
“Yeah,” he grins, then, words gritted in between thin lips, “Does it surprise you?”
or, Buck is a doctor, Eddie is a firefighter - somehow, they still find each other.
