An oil lamp crackled in the room Lloyd and Javier shared, casting the room in golden yellow light, pairing perfectly with the warmth emanating from the ondol floor. It was in this quiet and content night that Lloyd was doing his best impression of a cat who not only got the canary, but also the blue jay, six sparrows, three squirrels, the neighbor’s rotisserie chicken, and a full serving of cat food.
“Hey Javier,” Lloyd wheedled at Javier, who had just entered the room from a bath, "Remember that deal we made when we were fighting the Hell Knight, that deal that you agreed to?”

“Javier, come on, I gave you more than enough on your birthday.” Lloyd pleaded, trying to weasel his way out of it by copying Javier’s usual move—the fluttering lashes, the pout, the full-on puppy eyes. But obviously, the trick wouldn’t work on the one who developed it in the first place, and Lloyd was dismissed with a flick on the forehead.
“Master Lloyd, please do not attempt that again. You look like a bug.” Javier said with a scoff, though lacking heat. “Consider this my gift for you.”
