Chapter Text
"Mabel, what are you planning on dressing up as for trick-or-treating?" Lucas asked, behind the park bench. Watching his sister toss food to the Loomians gathered around her and Mabel's sitting frames. Starla lays purring contently on the wood bench.
Mabel stops observing their new friend's battle, quickly taking a peek at Jake from the bench. The raven-haired teen was leaning back on a tree. His pale yellow eyes contrasted against his dark gray outfit and the ocean hue. He was deep in thought, his arms crossed over. Mabel was still upset that Jake had chosen to wear a Metronette outfit, but she tried to move past it. Mabel speaks loudly, attempting to get Jake's attention.
"We're too old to be trick-or-treating." Lucy turns to look at Jake. He was still ruminating and downcast. Lucy waves him down, and Jake snaps out of thought. Turning his head to the trio by the bench.
"Oh, huh; sorry, I wasn't paying attention. What happened? I heard something about trick-or-treating?"
"We were wondering what you were doing for Halloween," Lucas asked. Jake frowned before answering.
"I want to go trick-or-treating; I've never got to before. Oh, Mabel, what did you say earlier?"
"...Uh, I said we should go trick-or-treating!" Mabel could hear Lucas snort behind her.
"You've never gone trick-or-treating before." Lucy asked Jake.
"Never; our hometown was very small, and we didn't leave it often. So there weren't any houses me and my friend could trick-or-treat at, but our families and neighbors would host a small party each year instead." Lucy looked excited.
"So this will be your first time trick-or-treating! We used to go trick-or-treating when we were younger. We used to make bets on who got the most candy. Lucas would always win, though. Hey, you should introduce us to your friend."
"I wish this would be my first time trick-or-treating. But holidays could always be used to cover shady things up, and we have to find the stone tablet already... Maybe it's just best to wait for Halloween next year to go trick-or-treating... Oh, when I get home, I'm sure I'll introduce you to them."
The light blonde male turns to Jake.
"Well, we haven't found a tablet signal yet, and it's very unlikely for us to find it on our own. It would be better to wait and be prepared than to find the piece and be unprepared. If you're still worried about something going wrong, we could celebrate now and be cautious during Halloween." Lucy looks up.
"Yeah, we won't be able to go trick-or-treating, but we could still dress up and set up a small party at Luna's. We could watch horror movies and eat candy." A teen walks toward the bench, curious about what they were talking about. The group turns around to look at them. Jake pushes himself up from the tree, walking towards the bench. He asks them.
"Hey, we were just talking about Halloween; should we host a party? If we host it now, we can be on alert during Halloween in case anything suspicious happens."
The teen thinks for a bit before nodding. They pause for a moment, raising an eyebrow towards Mabel. Questioning if she learned anything new.
"Oh, I got side-tracked! So, I didn't learn any new strategies or tricks, but I'll be sure to pay attention next time."
"Well, we should have the party tomorrow. Luna already has a lot of decorations up, so we don't have to decorate too much. Lucas can get candy, and I'll find a horror movie." Lucy says, smiling. Jake smiles at her before speaking.
"Well, let's see what the rest of us can do. Let's do the party at 8 pm? Is that good with everyone?" They all nod.
"Okay, we'll see you then. I'll try getting a costume." Lucas opened his mouth to question Jake but quickly closed it. The group sat in awkward silence, trying to understand why Jake would need another costume when he's currently in one. After a short moment, Jake speaks again.
"...So, plan? Let's get going then...?" He awkwardly coughs into his arm before turning around. He waves them goodbye over his shoulder. He hastily walks away, into the tunnel to the entertainment district. Mabel is the first to look away, waking up a groggy Starla beside her.
"So, let's go?"
