Theseus flew too close to the skies, well Tommy got too close to the water
Tommy is a random person living in a coastal city
one day a ship anchored at the port and Tommy overhears the sailors talking about how they captured a mermaid and how it was gonna make them richer than ever and how the trip was worth losing a few men for it.
Tommy is super curious and wants to see the mermaid, they are known to be fierce and violent, making their capture a rarity amongst humans.
And Tommy wants to see it.
He manages to sneak it at night when most of the sailors are down in the city to celebrate their return and there are only a few men guarding the ship.
He finds a green-tailed merperson lying in the bottom of a massive tank. They are hurt with bruises and cuts everywhere on their body but the worse wound is situated on their neck.
idk how but Tommy gets Dream out and now the mer is sticking to him like glue.
Dream’s voice is a mess, it has been damaged by a rough sailor and he can’t sing or talk, thus he can’t come back to his peers if he doesn’t want to be hunted for sport.
Not much is known about merperson biology but Tommy is still aware that once a Mer has been captured by humans, they would be rejected by the other mers.
He is hiding Dream in the port that is not frequented by much, feeding him and nursing him slowly but surely back to full health.
He notices that Dream gets more and more touchy-feely as the days pass by but he puts it on the fact that he saved him from certain death/enslavement and it’s been so long since Tommy had any kind of contact he welcomes it fully, leaning in every time he can.
He notices how each day Dream opens his mouth and tries to speak or make noise but it doesn’t work and Tommy, pained by the sight promises him to look for a remedy that would heal Dream’s damaged throat and Dream looks at him like he was the sun to his sky.
When Dream reached to Tommy with his hands, Tommy leaned into it and closed his eyes to savor the moment.
He didn’t expect the merman to kiss his nose.
He spluttered back, blushing so hard Dream couldn’t contain his laugh which was manifested by rapid breathing and fluttering gills as he had to lean on the edge to steady himself above the water.
His eyes crinkled and Tommy couldn’t stop his fondness from rushing up, his embarrassment totally forgotten as he was now blushing for another reason entirely.
Tommy tries to find a healer/doctor but most of them reject him and he has to go farther and farther each day.
His last hope resides in a healer that lives in the forest a few miles away from the city.
The human decides to go on a trip and warns Dream that he won’t be able to see him for at least a couple of days, four at most.
Dream is angry and signs furiously at Tommy, trying to pull him into the water and reaching dangerously with his claws, making Tommy step back from the water.
Tommy is hurt (emotionally) but still decides to go and turns his back on Dream, telling him that it’s okay it will only be a few days before he comes back.
He left and went to find the mysterious healer whose surname was Nemesis.
He finds a young girl with pink hair who tells him Nemesis died a year ago and now it’s only Niki who lives here.
Tommy is devastated and he looked so lost that Niki can’t help but asks him what he needed from Nemesis.
“One of my friends lost his voice not long ago.”
Niki furrows her brows and tells him that maybe she can help him with that since she has some knowledge on healing but she will need to know more about the injury.
Tommy is hesitant at first before looking at Niki's eyes and decides to trust her.
He tells her that his friend is a merperson that was captured by poachers who damaged his vocal cords so badly he can’t even make noises.
And even if Tommy doesn’t know much about mermaids he knows how important it is for their kind.
Niki agrees to help him and tells Tommy to come back in two days.
Once Tommy came back, Niki warns him about being careful once his friend gains his voice back but Tommy brushes it off and goes back to his friend, not expecting Dream to hurt him with his renewed ability.
The trip took him one solid week and when he goes back to his and the mermen place is not here. He waits all night for any sign of his new friend but nothing.
Tommy is crying and has loose hope when he finally sees a green tail in the water.
He surges forward and throws himself in the water, squealing in joy when clawed hands enlace him and bring him to the surface for air.
Dream is more than touchy with Tommy and the teen only sees that as his friend being worried about him leaving for so long.
He tells him about the remedy he got for Dream’s voice.
Life goes by almost normally from then on except Dream is more demanding with his touch and request from Tommy to be in reaching hands at all times.
Tommy doesn’t really mind and obliges him.
Every day for two weeks Tommy has to apply an orange glow-y cream to Dream's throat and make him drink a violet liquid that must taste vile because Tommy saw his friend grimaces each time.
After a few days, Dream can make some small noise and both of them are elated even if Tommy notices how Dream has become more possessive over him.
