Chapter Text

"Are you serious?" I groan, throwing my arms onto my desk, staring down at the papers scattered across.

“Fuck.”

I’ve barely been in Inaba for 2 months and I’m already working overtime. You would expect that they would give a rookie detective—Me some simple work such as theft or assault.

And I won’t deny it, they did, I mean what did I expect, a homicide case? Yeah right.

But the issue isn’t because they gave me work, it’s that they gave me A-LOT of it. So much that it’s forcing me to work overtime to finish before curfew.

This is all Dojima-san’s fault. Just before I was about to sign out earlier today, I was interrupted. And if I wasn’t interrupted, I wouldn’t have had to worry about this.

“Adachi!”

I hesitated, turning slowly to see my boss, Dojima-san, walking towards me with a stack of papers in his hand.

“Dojima-san.. is there a problem?..” I laugh nervously.

“There sure is.” He pushes the papers into my chest, out of reflex, I grab them before the fall. “Finish these up, then you can head out.”

He walks off.

I walk towards my desk and neatly place the stack of papers. I quickly scan through them, count them, and sit down.

15 reports. I can get this done in at least 20 minutes, it will be a piece of cake. I thought to myself.

The only reason I thought I could get it done that fast is because of Dojima-San, I usually see him doing 30 reports in a short span of time.

But boy was I an idiot, thinking that I was on Dojima-san’s level when he’s clearly more skilled than me, even though I have been working as a detective for some time, but I doubt he has ever been demoted—unlike a certain someone…

So I’ve been stuck, now working about 4 hours overtime, 2:00 am, scribbling on reports.

I’m about to fall asleep, my head resting on my hand, until someone walks towards me. I rub my eyes and look up to see a familiar face.

“Dojima-san?” I quietly say, slurring my words.

“Are you tired Adachi? Why don’t you sign off, I’ll take you home.” He grabs my pen from my hand and picks up the papers from off my desk.

“Why.. why are you taking them, I was almost done.”

“You didn’t have to actually do it all you idiot, it’s not due tomorrow.” He sighs, walking over to his desk and placing the papers down. “Well at least you could probably sign off early tomorrow, depending on how fast you work.”

“You said to finish it up.” I get up from my desk, grab my coat and walk towards his desk.

“Are you really all that smart Adachi? The due date is at the top of all the papers.” He groans.

My eyes widened. How could I have messed that up?

“Oh.. I’m just really tired, I haven’t been getting enough rest lately.” I yawn, looking at him.

He holds eye contact, “It’s alright, it doesn’t affect me.” He grabs his keys from his desk and shakes them, “Come on, I’ll take you home.”

“You buckled?” He says, closing the door behind him, sliding his car keys into the ignition and turning the vehicle on.

I rest my head on the passenger seat and mumble, “I’m not a child dojima-san.”

“Sure.” He shifted into reverse, placing his hand onto the back of my seat and turned around to face the back.

Once done, he turns around and shifts into drive, eyeing me in the process—which made me kind of uncomfortable.

“So!” I slap my thighs, sighing, “anything important coming up? Anything…assistant worthy?”

“I think you already have your hands full Adachi.” He side eyes me, then looks back onto the road.

“Oh.. yeah you’re right.” I frown.

He noticed my somber demeanor and placed his right hand onto my shoulder, firmly. “I mean, once you’re done, I do have some business that would be…Adachi worthy.” He chuckles.

His touch.. felt weird—I mean this isn’t the first time he’s placed his hand onto my shoulder, but this time, this time it feels more sincere….Which scares me.

I move slightly, out of discomfort, which he must have noticed because he pulls away and places his hand onto his thigh.

“Y-yeah!” I stuttered, “Please do tell me when you would like some help.”

The police station wasn’t far away from my home, I usually walk home actually, which, in most cases, takes about 15 minutes. So it wasn’t long before we arrived at my apartment.

“Well.” He puts the car into park, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I unbuckle, and place my hands onto my thighs, “Yeah..” eyeing him, “See you.”

I step out, about to close the car door when I stop, and say, “Wait, Dojima-san.”

“Hmm?” He still has one hand—his left one, on the wheel, and has his right placed on the side of the passenger seat.

I gulp, “it’s.. nearly, 3 in the morning, how about you stay…” This is stupid, What am I doing?! “the-the night!”

He looks at the dashboard and sighs, “I suppose you’re right, I am kind of tired, Yu is home with Nanako so it’ll be alright.”

The front door creaks open, and upon entering the apartment, the cold air touches my skin, sending a shiver through my body.

“take the bed!” I close the door behind us, locking it, “I’ll just sleep on the couch.”

He places his suitcase onto the kitchen counter, moving some junk to the side, “No it’s fine.”

My apartment wasn’t dirty, you could tell someone was living here of course—it just needed a slight.. tidying up.

“No, I insist.” I nervously chuckle.

He starts to undo his tie, which for some reason caught me by surprise. Watching felt a little perverted, so I looked away.

“Alrighty then.” He groans, “I’ll only stay for a few hours, I’ll be gone before you wake up.”

“Sounds good!” I smile, starting to get ready for bed.

I take my suit off, put on my lounge wear, grab one of my pillows from my bed, and lay down on the couch.

An hour passes after a bunch of tossing and turning, for some reason I can’t sleep. I am tired, especially after working on a bunch of nonsense—but I just can’t seem to fall asleep.

Maybe I just need a cup of water, I thought to myself. So I got up, grabbed a glass, and poured some water from the sink.

“Can’t sleep?”

I gasp, turning around to face Dojima-san. “Dojima!” I place a hand on my heart. “Jesus you scared me.”

He leans against the wall, “Sorry.” He chuckles.

I gulp down the water and place the glass in my sink. “No, I can't sleep.. like at all.” I look down, “Guess I got my nights rest back at work.” I walk back to the couch, sitting down, Dojima-san follows.

He sits down and spreads his legs, “Yeah me neither—well, not sleeping on the job part.” He stares.

“Hah.. yeah.. what’s wrong with you?” I stop, “I-I mean why can’t you sleep?”

“Don’t know. Probably just a change of scenery, I haven’t slept over at someone’s place in awhile.” He rests his arm on the couch, leaning his head on it, facing me.

I gulp, Why am I so nervous, it’s just Dojima-san? “Yeah. You can stay over anytime, my place is closer to the police station anyways.” I smile.

“You're right, I’ll be coming over more often then.” He moves closer, resting his head on the couch, close to my face.

“For.. for sure.” This feels so weird, usually dojima-san would have yelled at me already, is he drunk perhaps? “Dojima-san?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you drunk?”

He stares at me, then bursts out laughing, “Drunk? Adachi are you okay?”

Oh god, this is so embarrassing. My face turns red as I turn away, “Ah. Sorry.. it’s just that, you're being so nice to me.” I nervously laugh.

“Do you not like it when I tease you?”

I turned back to face him, “Not really..”

“I’ll stop then, I don’t want you upset.” He smirks, then rests his head on my shoulder.

From such sudden movement, it shocked me, but instead of moving away, I stayed.

“Thank you.”

“Mhm.”

After about 10 minutes of silence, the television on, and we’re in a more comfortable position, I finally turned to face him, to my surprise, he fell asleep. A smile forms on my face. Was Dojima-san always this cute?

I shiver; the air in the apartment so cold, and I lean a little closer to Dojima-san. From being so close I could feel his breath on my shoulder. “So warm..” I whisper to myself.

After a few seconds, I blink, then meet his gaze. Our faces are so close, this feeling in my chest, I want to say something to him—an excuse, but before I can say anything he suddenly kisses me.

My eyes widen, and after a few seconds I close them, leaning more into the kiss.

After what felt like forever he finally pulls away, “Adachi, do I make you uncomfortable?”

“Wha… no.. no you don’t, why do you ask?” I say breathing heavily.

“You always have this look on your face, especially when we’re alone.” He reaches for my face, and cups my chin.

“No it’s just..” I blush slightly, “You make me nervous.”

After about a few seconds he smiles and leans in again, waiting for me to kiss him back.

Everything feels so weird. I know I’m not into guys, I mean I’m sure I’m only into girls—I’m so sure I never even thought about how it would feel to kiss a guy.

But after kissing Dojima-san I don’t even think about how he’s a guy, I just think about how I’m kissing Dojima.

I lean in kissing him back, I place my hands onto his shoulders, and in response, he places one hand on the back of my head.

Finally we pull apart, both breathing heavily.

“Do you like me, Tohru?”

I still get nervous from his voice, even though we’re doing something extremely intimate right now, but it feels even weirder, hearing him say my first name.

“I..” I couldn’t muster any words. I just wanted to kiss him. So I do. I fall onto him, closing my eyes and leaning more into our kiss. I opened my eyes for a moment to see dojima-san’s face, hoping that he’s just as into it as I am. As I read his face, I see his eyes closed and his eyebrows furrowed, and he’s definitely enjoying it—maybe a little more than I am.

After what felt like about 10 minutes of kissing we finally parted, our eyes still locked. “I guess you do then.” He smiles, then kisses my cheek.

In his lap, I leaned up, moving my wrist upwards to see the time on my watch, but… of course, I took it off along with my suit.

“Did you want to know the time?” He stares.

I look back at him and look down immediately, after what we just did, eye contact is a little difficult. “Yes..”

He pulls his flip phone out of his pocket, and opens it. “It’s almost 5:30.”

My eyes widened.. How long were we kissing?!? “I.. didn’t know that much time passed..” I rest my hands on his chest.

He grabs my wrists, pulls them up to his lips, and kisses them. I didn’t flinch, like I did before. “Um. Are you going to leave soon?” I look at him as he kisses my arms, and my wrists. “I.. you said you would leave before I woke up—and it’s almost 5:30 like you said.” I nervously smiled, blushing heavily.

“We can go in at the same time.”

“Are you sure?..”

He puts my hands back onto his chest, “Of course.” He yawns, “besides, I’m getting pretty tired.” He smiles, in return I smile back.

“Me too.”

Trying to get comfortable, I didn’t know if it was okay to lay on top of him, so I sat back up, leaving his lap and leaning against the couch.

He gets up and walks back to my bedroom, once he reaches the door, he stops, and rests his hand on the doorframe and looks back. “I’m sure the couch isn’t comfortable, we can share a bed, I don’t mind.”

I blush. “I uhm—Yeah that’s.. thank you.” I stood up and followed him in.
