Chapter Text
“Welp, guess I’ll see ya t’night!”
Blue had raised his eyebrows. “Might I ask what tonight is?”
“Uh… I’ll take ya on a date! The… best date you’ve ever been on!”
“Splendid, love,” Blue had planted a kiss on Yellow’s cheek. “I’ll see you then.”
—
Yellow buried his face in his hands. Why did he say that? He shouldn’t have said anything earlier. He was just digging his grave deeper and deeper with every word. Digging a grave. Hey, wasn’t that just a swell idea? He probably deserved it.
He didn’t know what Blue liked, where he’d want to go, what he’d want to do! And now he had to take him on the best surprise date he’d ever been on. And looking like that, Blue had definitely been on his share of dates.
Yellow was leaning on the counter of the café, desperately racking his brain for ideas of what to do for his date that night.
From across the counter, Green held up a sign, their face worried.
‘What’s wrong’
“Aw, Green, you don’t gotta worry ‘bout me,” Yellow smiled and scratched the back of his head. “I dunno how I’m supposed to pull off this date I have with Blue tonight.”
Just as Green pulled out a sign that read ‘Can’t do much to help with that but have a cookie’, Flowery burst in, his rainbow trail following.
“Did I just hear you say ‘date’ and ‘Blue’ in the same sentence?”
Yellow sighed. “Yup.”
“Why so blue? Aren’t you supposed to be Yellow?” Flowery leaned on the counter next to Yellow.
“I- well, this is my own fault, really, but…” Yellow looked at Flowery, whose expression said ‘spill it, cowboy’. “I told Blue I’d give him the best date he’d ever been on, an’ now I dunno what ta’ do.”
Seth walked over from the corner and cut in. “How about, you keep your mouth shut and then you don’t end up in these situations? At least that would be the smart option.”
“Well, I think I knew that.” Yellow looked away shamefully.
Seth adjusted their glasses. “Evidently not.”
Before any of them could expect it, Aqua came running through the door. “I’m bored!’ She yelled. Once she saw the four of them clumped together, she came to a screeching halt. “What are we talking about?”
“Yellow was too dumb to be quiet…” Seth snipped, “and now he has to prepare a perfect date for Blue.”
“Uuu, I know the perfect place!” Aqua spun around and bounced excitedly.
Everyone’s heads snapped toward her. “You… do?” Yellow said, a shining sliver of hope present in his voice.
“Yes, yes, yes!!!” Aqua jumped up to bounce on his head. “Take him to Netskie climb! The wind blows so fast there, it’s so fun!! I’ll make sure to throw knives at you guys to help the mood!!”
Yellow sighed. “Thanks, really, but he don’t seem like the type to like knives bein’ thrown at him.”
“Aww, boring!” Aqua jumped off Yellow’s head, back onto the floor. “Who doesn’t like having knives thrown at their face?”
“Most people,” Seth said, rolling their eyes and they pushed themself up to sit on the counter. “I bet he’d like something educated. Take him to a librarby or something.”
“Do we even have a librarby?” Flowery asked. “Besides, Blue would be bored out of his mind.”
Seth looked offended. “No, he wouldn’t! He, unlike all of you, has more than one brain cell, and I’m sure he would be intrigued!” They pointed a finger at Flowery. “Where do you think they should go?”
Flowery looked up, imagining. “ Ahh, the possibilities! You could take him out for a romantic time fishing in the fishing boat (for pals only)! Or, even better: How ‘bout a decadent night on the garden?” He lowered his voice. “There are plenty of little private corners to kiss him si—”
“Okay! That’s enough from you.” Seth groaned. “Forget I asked.”
“I’m just giving him suggestions!” Flowery looked at Yellow, whose face was an unhealthy shade of red. “Yellow! Am I justified for helping a guy out?”
“Sure ya are. You prol’ly had the best ideas outta anyone who tried helpin’, so there’s somethin’.”
“See, Seth? I told you your idea was boring!”
“It’s not boring if you have taste!”
“Hey, are you guys not including me in something?” From under them, a tiny voice squeaked. Orange scurried up the table, her paws, donned in boxing gloves, instantly grabbing a cookie that Green had intended for Yellow as soon as she got up to the counter.
“Aw, there’s our favorite mouse!” Flowery said, smiling. “We’re just talking about Yellow’s love life.”
“STOP IT!! You know I’m not a mouse! I’m human! Just like all of you!” Orange yelled (Knowing damn well that no one at this joint was human). “You guys are just… bullies!” She nibbled her (Yellow’s) cookie. “Who’s Yellow even with, anyway?”
“Blue,” All five of them replied in perfect unison.
“Blue?” Orange was shocked. “How?”
“A little bit of dumb luck,” Flowery replied smoothly, “And a little bit of me.”
Yellow pressed his forehead against the counter so that he was staring at the ground. “Y’all need to find somethin’ else to talk about.”
“Why is that, hmm?” Flowery taunted. “What better things have we to talk about? And, are you at least going to consider my offers for potential dates?”
“They’re considered,” Yellow mumbled.
“What’s considered?” Yellow’s head snapped up. That voice could only belong to one person. And that meant…
Of all people to appear in the doorway of The Flower Cafe, of all times he could have appeared, Blue chose now to show his gorgeous face. And instead of pressing his forehead into the counter again and wishing he had followed through on that grave-digging plan, Yellow couldn’t look away.
Blue was wearing a dress. Baby blue, knee length, and flowy, complete with puffy sleeves.
And by golly was he beautiful.
