Field Trip to the Avengers Compound

Summary:

Peter Parker is fifteen years old and has three identities to keep separate: a pupil at Midtown High, Spider-Man, and Tony Stark’s personal intern. After the Civil War ended without any rifts, the Avengers have remained united, and Peter trains regularly with Steve and Natasha, works in the lab with Tony, and has even fallen in love — and had his feelings reciprocated — with Wanda Maximoff. To his classmates, however, he’s just an ordinary lad who claims to be doing an internship at Stark Industries.

When the annual school trip is organised to take place at the Avengers’ compound, Peter realises that his fragile web of lies is in danger of unravelling. He has a month to prepare, and he spends it begging the team not to cause any trouble. Wanda threatens anyone who plays pranks. Tony promises. Clint promises. Even Sam promises.

But on the day of the trip, between an AI greeting him by name, an Avenger ruffling his hair and calling him ‘Stark Junior’, and a slip of the tongue that blows his cover, Peter discovers that his colleagues’ good intentions are worth less than nothing.

Notes:

This story was clearly inspired by another very similar one (given the premise, there’s not much I can do to make them different) which you can find here on Ao3. I loved it and just had to write one myself.

Work Text:

Field Trip to the Avengers Compound

Peter Parker woke up with the sinking feeling that something terrible was about to happen to him.

It was Friday morning. The day of the field trip. The day he had been dreading for a month.

"Field trip to the Avengers Compound today!" May exclaimed, walking into his room with a radiant smile. "Are you excited?"

Peter let out a groan into his pillow.

"Oh, come on. Your friends know you intern at Stark Industries. They don't know which branch. It could be anywhere."

"May," Peter said, lifting his head, "the bus is taking us directly to the Avengers Compound. The exact same compound where I train with Steve and Natasha. Where I work with Tony. Where Wanda lives. Where Clint waits for me to play Mario Kart. Where Sam pulls idiotic pranks. Where..."

"Where you have a wonderful life full of people who love you?"

"Where I have a wonderful life full of people who want to embarrass me in front of my entire class!"

May laughed and tossed him a clean hoodie. "Wanda told me she threatened everyone. Especially Clint!"

"Wanda threatens Clint at least three times a week. He never learns."

"Well, then look on the bright side. Maybe today Clint will learn."

Peter groaned again.

---

The school bus jolted along the road toward the compound. Peter was squeezed between Ned and MJ.

"So," Ned whispered, trying not to let MJ hear, "do they know?"

"Who?"

"The Avengers. Do they know about the field trip?"

"Yes, Ned. They all know. I mentioned it during team dinner a month ago. It was a mistake."

"What did they say?"

"Clint offered to show up in full camo and follow the class around pretending to be a plant. Sam is rubbing his hands together with a sadistic smile. Natasha smiled in this creepy way. Tony said 'it'll be fun.' Steve tried to calm everyone down. Bucky said 'I don't give a crap' and went back to eating his cereal."

"And Wanda?"

"Wanda threatened everyone. She said if anyone embarrasses me, she’ll turn them into a knick-knack."

"So... situation under control?"

"I don't know, Ned. Wanda is powerful, but Tony is Tony. And Clint is Clint. And Sam is Sam. I've spent a month in pure anxiety. A whole month."

MJ, who had been quiet until then, lowered her book and looked at him. She didn't say anything. But her eyes held an intense, almost searching expression that Peter had never seen on her before.

"MJ?" he said. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah," she replied, turning back to her book. "Everything's fine."

But Peter noticed that for the rest of the ride, she didn't turn a single page. And she stayed sitting very, very close to him.

From the seat in front of them, Flash Thompson leaned over with a wide grin. "Hey, Parker! Ready for the field trip? It's gonna be hilarious seeing everyone's face when they find out your internship is a total lie!"

Peter didn't answer. He clutched the phone in his pocket and thought of Wanda.

*Please, let everything go well today.*

---

The Avengers Compound was different from the old Tower. No glittering skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan. This was a proper operational base: low, functional buildings, airstrips, training areas, all surrounded by high-security fencing.

The students stepped off the bus in a chorus of "wows" and "oh my gods." Peter, on the other hand, was trying to become invisible.

The tour guide was waiting for them at the entrance. She was a woman in her forties, brown hair pulled back into a sharp bun, a dark blue pantsuit, and a professional smile. Peter recognized her instantly.

Claire. Pepper Potts' personal secretary.

"Good morning, everyone!" Claire exclaimed. "I'm Claire, and I'll be your guide for today. Welcome to the Avengers Compound, which also houses several offices and Stark Industries laboratories. Before we head inside, I need to hand out your visitor badges."

Peter relaxed. Claire was a professional. Claire knew who Peter was. Most likely, Pepper had sent her to help Peter out.

The woman called out names in alphabetical order and distributed the passes. When she got to Peter, she handed him a visitor badge identical to the others.

"Here you go, Mr. Parker," she said with a smile.

Peter looked at her, surprised. Claire gave him a quick, imperceptible wink. Even though she knew Peter already had his own badge, she was giving him a visitor pass to avoid raising suspicion.

The group moved toward the security gates. Peter felt almost at ease. Claire had thought of everything.

Then they reached the scanning turnstiles.

Peter scanned his visitor badge. The turnstile beeped and slid open. Peter took a step forward.

And FRIDAY spoke.

"Good morning, Peter. Mr. Stark left a message for you: 'Peter, stop by the lab after the tour, I need your help with the new project.'"

Silence.

"Mr. Rogers also left a message: 'Peter, we’re making up for the training session you missed yesterday this evening. Don't be late.'"

More silence.

"And Mr. Barton left a message: 'Peter, Mario Kart rematch tonight. I'm waiting for you. You can't run forever.'"

The silence became deafening.

Then Betty exploded. "PETER!"

"Why does the AI know you?!" Charles yelled.

"And why did Tony Stark leave you a message?!" Sally chimed in.

"And Steve Rogers?! CAPTAIN AMERICA?!"

"And who is Barton?!"

"Hawkeye," Ned answered automatically. Then he slapped a hand over his mouth.

Mr. Harrington stepped forward, his face turning bright red. "Mr. Parker! What is the meaning of this?"

Peter swallowed hard. He needed to think fast. Very fast.

"It's... it's a joke!" he stammered. "My coworkers... they have names that... that happen to sound like the Avengers! By pure coincidence! And they always prank me! Because... because I'm the new intern! It's like a tradition!"

"They call you Peter," MJ pointed out.

"Yeah, because... because they know me! We're colleagues!"

"And they left you messages on an artificial intelligence that addressed you by name," MJ continued.

"It's... it's totally normal! To prank the new interns!"

"Parker," MJ said, "I know you're lying. I can tell because your left eye is twitching."

"Nothing is twitching!"

"It's twitching. It's still twitching."

Flash, at the back of the group, crossed his arms. "It's all a setup. Parker probably paid someone. Or he hacked the system. That's the only explanation."

"Flash," MJ said, "shut up."

"No! Parker is lying! He's lying about everything!"

"Mr. Thompson," Claire intervened in a frigid tone, "I must ask you to watch your language. Let us proceed with the tour. Please follow me."

The group marched on. Peter walked at the very back, his cheeks burning.

"Dude," Ned whispered, "that didn't go so well."

"I know, Ned. I know."

MJ walked right beside him, in silence, staring at him with that searching expression. Peter was starting to feel deeply uncomfortable.

"MJ, why are you looking at me like that?"

"Because you're interesting today, Parker. Very interesting."

---

The tour began with the Stark Industries laboratories. Claire led the group through glass corridors, showing off rooms filled with prototypes, holograms, and heavy machinery.

"This is where we develop new technologies," she explained. "Some projects are classified, but we can look at the common areas."

While the group was observing a robotic arm, a door suddenly slid open. Out stepped Tony Stark himself, holding a screwdriver in one hand and an armor gauntlet in the other, which he was actively tinkering with.

"...and then I need to calibrate the..." He froze upon seeing the group. "Oh. The field trip!"

The students stood there, mouths agape. Tony Stark. In the flesh. Holding an Iron Man gauntlet.

"Welcome to the compound!" Tony exclaimed, spreading his arms wide. "I'm Tony Stark, maybe you've heard of me. Just wanted to welcome the... ah, Peter! There you are!"

Peter tried to hide behind Ned. It didn't work.

"Peter, come here for a second," Tony said, gesturing to him. "I need to talk to you about something."

"Tony, no..."

"It's urgent. Work stuff. Intern business. Come on."

Peter walked over, mentally cursing Tony, his smug face, his screwdriver, and his armor gauntlet.

Tony pulled him aside and lowered his voice just enough for the group to still hear.

"I read your report on the new adhesive compounds," he said. "The one you designed for the suit. Great job. Five times the tensile strength, perfect elasticity. We need to field-test it. We'll try it out tomorrow, okay?"

"Tony," Peter whispered through gritted teeth, "I hate you. I hate you with all my soul. I will make you pay for this."

"Sure, sure," Tony replied, smiling. Then he raised his voice. "Oh, by the way, team dinner tonight at eight. Wanda said she wants to cook something. She specifically asked for you to be there."

"Tony..."

"Alright, gotta run! Have fun, kids! Buy my action figure! I mean, no, we don't have a gift shop here. Too bad."

And he walked away, whistling.

The group stared at Peter.

"You're Tony Stark's personal intern," Betty said.

"And you designed a compound for a suit," Charles added.

"And Wanda wants you at dinner," Sally chimed in.

"Wanda Maximoff," Cindy specified. "The Scarlet Witch."

"Maybe it's a different Wanda," Peter attempted. "Another coworker. With the same name. By coincidence."

Nobody believed him. Not even himself.

Mr. Harrington wiped away a tear. "Mr. Parker, I am so proud."

Flash was frozen solid. His lips were moving, but no sound was coming out.

MJ stared at Peter with narrowed eyes. She didn't say a word. But her gaze was more intense than ever.

---

The tour continued through the labs. Several employees recognized Peter and greeted him with friendly nods or brief "hey, Parkers."

"Peter, your algorithm is an absolute lifesaver," one engineer said.

"Parker, when are you coming back to give us a hand?" asked another.

"Hey, Peter, did you catch the game last night?" added a third.

Every greeting was another blow to Peter's crumbling cover.

"They're just colleagues," Peter kept saying. "They know me because... because I work here. It's normal."

Nobody believed he was just a simple intern anymore. Not even Mr. Harrington.

Finally, the group arrived at the Avengers Museum.

"You can explore freely here for twenty minutes," Claire announced. "Then we'll head over to the compound cafeteria for lunch."

The students scattered. Peter immediately headed toward the back of the room, where the Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch displays were located.

The Spider-Man panel had been modified.

Under the "Hero Trivia" section, someone had added:

“Spider-Man frequently wears Hello Kitty boxers under his suit. (Source: a camera that shouldn't exist)”

“Spider-Man has a 78% loss rate in Mario Kart. Against Clint Barton. Yes, it's embarrassing.”

And on the Scarlet Witch panel:

“The Scarlet Witch frequently needs to be redirected because she gets distracted by Spider-Man's tight suit. (Source: the same camera as before)”

Peter closed his eyes. *“Sam. It was Sam.”*

He grabbed his phone and took photos of both panels. Then he texted Wanda.

“Museum. Panels. Look at what Sam did.”

An immediate reply came back. “I'm on it.”

Thirty seconds later, the panels updated. The embarrassing additions vanished, replaced by the text: “We apologize for the interruption. The system has been restored. - FRIDAY”

Moments later, another text from Wanda: “Found him. Neutralized. Sam will be quiet for a while. Love you. See you later.”

Peter let out a sigh of relief. Then he heard a rustle behind him.

He turned around. MJ was standing right there, her eyes fixed on his phone screen, where the chat with Wanda was still clearly visible.

"Interesting," MJ said.

"MJ! I... I wasn't..."

"You took pictures of the panels. You sent them to Wanda. And she replied 'Love you.'"

"It's... you've got the wrong idea. That's not Wanda Maximoff. It's a different Wanda. A friend of mine. Whose name is Wanda. By coincidence."

MJ raised an eyebrow. "How many Wandas do you know, Parker?"

"...two?"

MJ stared at him for a long moment. Then she shook her head and walked away, but not before Peter caught a small smile tugging at her lips.

Peter swallowed hard. MJ had seen everything.

And that terrified him.

---

The lunch break arrived like an oasis. The compound cafeteria was wide and bright, with large windows overlooking the inner courtyard.

The students lined up for food. Peter joined them, hoping to blend into the background.

Then he heard a voice behind him.

"Hey, Parker."

Peter turned around. Clint Barton was standing right behind him in the lunch line. He held an empty tray and wore a far too amused expression.

"Hi, Clint," Peter mumbled.

"Ready for the rematch tonight? I left you a message this morning. You can't run forever."

"I wasn't running. I was... busy."

"Busy losing?"

"I didn't lose every single match."

"You won one. Out of twenty-one. And I was distracted because Natasha was throwing knives at me."

Peter's classmates turned around to look at them. The man behind Peter was tall, athletic, with blonde hair and the look of an eternal teenager. Nobody recognized him right away; without his suit, Clint Barton could easily pass for an ordinary office worker.

"Who is that?" Betty whispered to Ned.

"I don't know," Ned replied, though his eyes were widening by the second.

Clint sat down at the table with Peter, Ned, and MJ without asking for permission. He set his tray down and started eating.

"So," Clint said, "tell me about your friends. This is Ned, right? The guy who knows everything?"

Ned let out a choked sound. "You... you're..."

"Clint," Peter interrupted him. "He's Clint. A colleague of mine. A perfectly normal colleague."

"Sure," Clint said, smirking. "A normal colleague who kicks your butt at Mario Kart."

"You don't kick my butt. It's just luck."

"Luck? I beat you twenty times out of twenty-one. That's not luck, that's skill."

MJ stared at Clint with narrowed eyes. "Clint," she said slowly. "Clint Barton?"

"Hey, you recognized me!" Clint exclaimed. "Usually, without the bow and arrows, nobody catches on. Except you, apparently. You're sharp."

Ned looked like he was about to scream. Peter stopped him by putting a hand over his mouth.

"Don't. Scream. Ned," he whispered. "Please."

Ned nodded, his eyes wide.

Right at that moment, FRIDAY's voice echoed through the cafeteria.

“Mr. Barton, you are expected in the briefing room. The rest of the Avengers team is waiting for you. Miss Romanoff says to hurry up.”

Clint sighed and stood up. "I'm coming, I'm coming! Tell Nat not to lose her mind. I'll be right there." He turned to Peter. "See you tonight, Parker. Don't run."

And he walked away, leaving a dead silence in his wake.

Then Betty exploded. "THAT WAS HAWKEYE!"

"And he sat at the table with Peter!" Charles yelled.

"And he plays Mario Kart with Peter!" Sally added.

"And Peter said 'Hi Clint' to him like it was totally normal!" Betty concluded.

Flash, sitting at a nearby table, shook his head. "It doesn't mean anything. He's the lamest Avenger. He probably just felt sorry for Parker. Saw him sitting all by himself between photocopies and decided to keep him company."

Nobody pointed out that Tony Stark himself had stopped to talk to Peter. Nobody pointed out that Clint Barton had mentioned "twenty matches of Mario Kart," which implied Peter hung out with the Avenger very often.

Nobody except MJ, who was staring at Peter with an intensity that made him sweat.

---

After lunch, the group headed to the marketing department. It was a massive open-plan space with desks arranged in islands, walls covered in concept art, and monitors displaying advertising campaigns.

"This is where campaigns for the public image of the Avengers and Stark Industries events open to the public are created," Claire explained. "Sometimes the Avengers themselves collaborate with the team."

Peter looked toward the back of the room. His heart leaped into his throat.

Wanda Maximoff was sitting at a desk in civilian clothes—light jeans and a t-shirt of a Mexican rock band she adored—talking to a few social media managers. Her hair was down, and she looked deeply focused.

Then she looked up and spotted the group. She smiled.

She stood up and walked over with an easy stride, a gentle smile plastered on her face. Her eyes met Peter's for a split second. He shook his head imperceptibly. She replied with a reassuring look.

"Good morning, everyone," Wanda said, stopping in front of the group. "Welcome to the compound. Are you on the tour?"

"Yes!" the students answered in unison.

"I'm glad. Have you seen the labs yet? The museum?"

"Yes, Miss Maximoff!" Mr. Harrington exclaimed.

"Call me Wanda, please." She smiled. "I can answer a few questions if you'd like. About marketing, I mean. It's an interesting job."

Peter wasn't at the front of the crowd. He had stayed back, on the outer edge of the group, trying not to be noticed. Wanda was doing a great job: she was talking to everyone, distributing her attention evenly, and never looking at him.

Then Betty Brant raised her hand.

"Miss Maximoff?"

"Wanda."

"Wanda. Can I ask you a question about your private life?"

Wanda hesitated. Just for a second. "Depends on the question."

"The internet says you're in a relationship with Spider-Man. Is it true?"

Wanda smiled, but Peter knew her well enough to see the discomfort in her eyes. "The internet says a lot of things. Some are true, some aren't. Spider-Man is a colleague and a friend. That story was started by one of my more intellectually challenged teammates."

Chuckles rippled through the teenagers, especially the girls.

"But are you single, then?"

"No, I'm not single." Wanda took a step back. "But I prefer to keep my private life... private. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have other commitments. It was a pleasure meeting you all."

She turned to leave, passing right by the group. Right past Peter.

And in that moment, out of habit, out of distraction, out of affection, she leaned in slightly toward him and gave him a quick kiss on the lips.

"See you later, love," she murmured.

She took two steps. Then she froze.

The silence in the room was absolute.

Wanda turned around slowly. Her face had gone from a smile to pure horror. She saw every single pair of eyes in the room staring at her, jaws dropped.

The only thing she managed to say was, "You... you didn't see anything."

Then she turned and bolted out of the room, disappearing behind a door.

Silence.

Then all hell broke loose.

"LOVE?!"

"SHE KISSED YOU! ON THE LIPS!"

"ARE YOU TOGETHER?!"

"PETER PARKER IS THE SCARLET WITCH'S BOYFRIEND!"

"WHAT IS GOING ON?!"

Betty Brant pushed her way through the crowd, her eyes gleaming. "Peter Parker, when this field trip is over, I am interviewing you for three days straight. Three days. Do you understand?"

"Betty, I..."

"THREE DAYS!"

Mr. Harrington tried to restore order. "Class, please! Calm down!"

Claire helped him out. "Mr. Parker's private life, and especially that of an Avenger, is private. Far more private than anyone else's. I ask you to maintain your composure and show some respect."

Slowly, the chaos died down. But everyone's eyes were still glued to Peter.

Everyone except two.

Flash Thompson was sitting on a chair in the corner, his gaze completely blank, his mouth slightly open. He looked like a short-circuiting robot. He hadn't said a single word.

And MJ was standing to the side, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised. She stared at Peter with an expression that clearly said: *“I know everything.”*

Peter swallowed. The day wasn't over yet.

---

The final stop was the conference room.

"A Q&A session with a few members of the Avengers will take place here," Claire announced. "Please remember: do not ask personal questions. Do not ask about scandals or gossip. Be respectful."

The group stopped in front of the closed doors. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation.

Then, suddenly, a voice behind them said, "Sorry I'm late."

Everyone turned around. Natasha Romanoff was walking toward them in civilian clothes, a faint smirk playing on her lips.

The students stood frozen. The Black Widow. In person.

Natasha walked past the group, heading toward the conference room. Peter was right in her path. He tried to slip away, but a hand grabbed his arm.

MJ.

"Where do you think you're going, Parker?" she murmured.

"I..."

Natasha passed right next to him. She reached out and ruffled his hair with a quick, affectionate gesture.

"Hey, Stark Junior," she said. "Don't be late for training tonight. Steve gets annoyed if you skip again."

And she disappeared inside the conference room.

It took several seconds for the class to recover. Then they followed Natasha, stumbling over each other, muttering incoherent sentences.

Peter walked in last, trying to hide between Ned and a pillar.

---

The conference room was large, with rows of chairs arranged in a semicircle in front of a stage. On the stage sat Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Wanda Maximoff, and... Spider-Man.

Peter froze. Spider-Man was on the stage. Or rather, someone in a suit identical to his was sitting there. The figure was slumped back in a relaxed posture, arms crossed, head tilted slightly.

*Sam,* Peter thought. *Sam is in a Spider-Man suit. On stage. In front of my class. Right after Wanda just revealed that we're together.*

He wanted to die. He could admit it was a good idea to prevent anyone from suspecting that he was the spider. But it was still humiliating, and above all, he was terrified of what Sam might say.

Peter sank into his seat, trying to become one with the pillar next to him. Ned was beside him, his eyes dinner-plate wide. MJ was on his other side, her searching gaze more intense than ever.

"Alright!" Tony began. "Welcome to the Q&A session. I'm Tony Stark, and these are my friends. Go ahead and ask questions. Be creative. But not too creative. We have a legal limit."

The session started. Standard, harmless questions: who was the strongest, who was the fastest, what was the toughest battle. Everything was going smoothly.

Then Flash snapped out of his shock.

He stood up, his face flushed red, his eyes burning with anger and desperation.

"I have a question!" he shouted.

Tony looked at him. "Yes, you, the kid with the expression that says 'I'm about to ask an awkward or stupid question,' depending on how you look at it."

"I want to know why Peter Parker is being passed off as the Scarlet Witch's boyfriend!" Flash yelled, pointing at Peter at the back of the room. "It's a setup! It's impossible! Parker is a liar! He lied about the internship, about everything! He can't be Wanda Maximoff's boyfriend! It's... it's ABSURD!"

A heavy silence fell over the room. Wanda clenched her fists, her cheeks burning. She was about to stand up, to snap back, but Tony stopped her with a small gesture.

"Sit down, Wanda," he said. "I've got this."

Tony looked at Flash for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was calm, almost gentle.

"What's your name?"

"Flash Thompson."

"His name is Eugene!" MJ called out cheerfully from the back rows.

"Alright, Eugene. I'd be happy to answer that. Peter Parker hasn't been 'passed off' as Wanda's boyfriend. Peter Parker IS Wanda's boyfriend. He's also my personal intern. And probably the smartest person in this entire compound—after me, obviously. And maybe Pepper. And maybe Bruce. Okay, he's top five."

A few people snickered. Flash didn't.

"Peter works here," Tony continued. "He handles important projects. He helps the team. And he's a good kid. So yes, Eugene, it's all true. And if you have any other questions, I suggest you think twice before asking them."

Flash remained standing, completely still. He opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again.

Then he sat down. And didn't say another word.

---

The session was drawing to a close. The students were beginning to stand up.

Then Steve Rogers cleared his throat.

"Oh, Peter," he said with an innocent smile. "We're making up for that training session tonight. Don't be late. I know you were stuck in the lab yesterday, but no excuses today."

Peter sighed. "Yes, Cap. I'll be there."

"Stuck in the lab?" Tony chimed in, wearing a far too amused expression. "But didn't you leave early yesterday for an extra training session with Steve?"

Peter shot him a murderous glare. *Tony, I will kill you.*

"Maybe I got confused," Tony continued. "Who knows where you were. Maybe on the roof? With someone?"

"Yeah," "Spider-Man" chimed in from the stage. Sam. His voice was disguised by a changer, but Peter recognized the cadence perfectly. "There are cameras everywhere, you know. In every single corner."

Peter and Wanda blushed in perfect unison.

"And sometimes," Sam continued, "the cameras catch interesting things. Like two people kissing under the stars. Very romantic. Very sweet. Very..."

Wanda snapped. She stood up abruptly, used her powers to pull Peter toward her, grabbed him by the hand, and dragged him toward a side exit.

"The session is officially over!" Tony called out, laughing. "Thanks for coming, everyone!"

The last thing Peter saw before being hauled out of the room was MJ, sitting at the back, staring at him with a massive smirk while Ned laughed his head off.

---

That evening, Peter was lying on his bed in May's apartment. The door was strictly open—May had insisted.

Wanda was beside him, curled up under the blankets. The light from the desk lamp illuminated their faces.

"I can't believe Tony and Steve made me work three times as hard today," Peter complained. "Tony made me clean the entire lab, three times. Steve made me run so many laps around the compound I think I dug a trench. Then combat simulation—I don't think I've ever had this many bruises."

Wanda laughed. "Think about Sam and Clint. They're probably still taped to the lobby windows with pounds of duct tape."

Peter smiled. "How much tape did you use?"

"Enough to keep them there as long as I want. I also threatened Vision not to interfere. He agreed. He said 'observing their tribulations will be an educational experience.'"

"I love Vision."

"Me too. Sometimes."

They fell silent for a moment, simply enjoying each other's company. Then Peter's phone buzzed.

A text from MJ.

“I know you're Spider-Man.”

Peter stared at the screen. The blood drained from his face.

"Oh, no," he muttered.

Wanda looked at the screen. Then she burst out laughing.

"Oh, no," Peter repeated. "Oh, no, no, no..."

"I told you she was sharp," Wanda said, still giggling.

"But how did she figure it out?! I never told her anything! I denied everything!"

"Babe, she saw you taking pictures of the museum panels while texting them to me. She saw you talking to Clint. She saw you getting messages from Tony, Steve, and Natasha. She saw Sam dressed up as Spider-Man making jokes about us. She's smart—you've told me that plenty of times, and I saw it myself when I snuck in to watch your Decathlon practices."

Peter stared at his phone. The text was still there, glowing on the screen.

"What do I reply?" he asked, his voice cracking.

Wanda rested her head on his shoulder. "The truth. She already knows anyway."

Peter swallowed hard. Then, slowly, he typed out a reply.

“How did you figure it out?”

The response came almost instantly.

“It was obvious, Parker. But your face when you read my text must have been epic. We'll talk about it at school tomorrow.”

Peter stared at the screen. Then he looked at Wanda.

"We'll talk about it at school tomorrow," he repeated in a faint whisper.

Wanda burst into that warm, contagious laugh of hers again.

"You're lucky," she said, kissing his cheek. "MJ is a good person. She won't tell anyone."

"I know," Peter murmured. "But tomorrow she's going to interrogate me worse than Natasha. I can feel it."

"You'll survive."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes." Wanda kissed him, slowly, softly. "You're Spider-Man. But above all, you're Peter Parker. You survive everything."

Peter smiled. Then he kissed her back.

And despite MJ, despite Flash, despite Tony, Sam, Clint, Natasha, and everything else that had happened, everything was fine.

Perfectly fine.
