Chapter Text
The Yokohama precinct is a rather small building with multiple levels, each serving the different departments that build up the police force. The first level is the main space, the Chief’s office and the reception area where people can bring in lost items, make complaints that require their attention, and file reports for missing person cases, or reports about possible break-ins and whatnot. The second level has a lot of the more specialized offices. This is where the detective unit, the undercover operations unit, and the leader for the detective’s all inhabit when not out in the field, or at home.
This is where Chuuya spends a lot of his time. His little office space is nice, and while it isn’t much, it’s his little space and he loves it. It’s much better than the small apartment he rents out, a temporary little space he doesn’t occupy very often unless he needs a quiet space to rest away from anyone or a place to get ready for his missions. Safe to say he spends way more time in the field and at his desk space than he does at home, so it’s a rather barren and dusty space.
His coworkers are part of what makes the building feel more like a home than his meager apartment ever has. They’re all really cool people and he enjoys spending time with them… well most of them..
His work partner, Tachihara, is someone Chuuya spends the most time with. Tachihara is the closest to his age in the entire precinct. He’s still a bit of a rookie, but he’s been working his ass off to earn his place by Chuuya’s side. Chuuya was put in charge of helping him learn the ropes of being an undercover cop and detective, Tachihara has been there with him since the younger joined the force, and he’s somehow always there by Chuuya’s side the second he needs the younger male when his brother can’t be. Whether that be because Tachi has a huge crush on Chuuya and is working hard to try and impress the redhead with the hope to become more than work partners, Chuuya doesn’t know, but he’s doing a great job at being respectful in his attempts. Tachihara is like a little brother to him, though. Chuuya has felt the many.. looks Tachihaa has given him, though, so while he’s trying to respect Chuuya’s obvious denial of the younger redhead’s denial, Chuuya can tell the boy isn’t succeeding in that endeavor..
It isn’t that bad, Chuuya often tells himself, there are worse people in the office.. Luckily Chuuya passes enough as a man that the creepier fools haven’t tried much of anything.
…yet.
Verlaine, Chuuya’s brother, works for the police force, too. He’s a patrol sergeant. He’s always out in the streets and rarely in the offices. The only time Chuuya really sees him is if they pointedly try and meet up to eat together on their breaks, or when Verlaine brings in a criminal and Chuuya happens to be with the criminal Verlaine comes to apprehend.
Chuuya loves his brother dearly, even if he can be overprotective and overbearing, sometimes. Thankfully Verlaine’s husband, Rimbaud, helps keep the blond in line. Rimbaud has been a bit of a life saver, every time Verlaine tries to coddle him. Without Rimbaud Chuuya just knows he would be walking around with bubblewrap and bulletproof clothes as armor
Thankfully Rimbaud volunteers at the station, so he’s there often enough to make sure Chuuya doesn’t have to suffer the constant attentive attitude from his brother, unless he gets shot on a job, then they’re both all over him like flies that just wont bug off. Rimbaud works mostly at the front desk, his calm demeanor often helps keep grieving, overzealous, paranoid, or freaked out people in the lobby calm and help them get their requests on file. It’s his composed nature that keeps everyone from going “batshit crazy” as Chuuya and Verlaine so love to say. Needless to say Rimbaud has gained the monger ‘Karen Whisperer’ as he has become a master at taming even the craziest of idiots. It’s impressive. Incredibly impressive. Rookies and experienced cops alike often take pointers from him when dealing with idiots of their own, or dealing with the chief of police, Murase, when he’s in one of his moods.
Murase, Chief of police for fifteen years. He was appointed when he was 35, now he’s 50 and the reason Chuuya joined Yokohama precinct. Murase is also why Chuuya has been able to rise in the ranks so quickly. He’s the chief’s favorite and everyone can tell. Chuuya has often been mercilessly teased about it, having often been called Murase’s son because of the way the officer cares for Chuuya.
So overall, Chuuya genuinely prefers to be at the offices with the people he considers family rather than his dusty little apartment on the lesser side of Yokohama.
Chuuya has worked for the department since he was 20, having graduated from the academy a year early, and he’s been an undercover agent more often than not. He was promoted when he turned twenty one, and now, at twenty three, he’s climbing to the top of his department and inching closer and closer to becoming the ace in his field, the goal he has had since he was fourteen and first made the decision to be an undercover specialist.
His specialty is becoming an entirely different person. Disguises and acting are his top skills and he’s proven so time, and time, again. Sure he may still be treated like a kid at work, sometimes, with how many people that consider him theirs to protect, and all, but they all know he’s capable when in the field and won’t hold him back when he takes on big assignments.
He hasn’t actually taken on anything too huge, despite what may be assumed by his fellow officers, as he is still revered in the underground. They call him ‘The Police’s Secret Weapon,’ a title he so despises. He doesn’t like the thought of being a weapon, but he deals with it because it keeps people safe, and there’s no stopping a nickname spread in the underbelly of Yokohama once it’s become mainstream.
Today is Chuuya’s day. He just knows it. Since the second he walked through the doors of the precinct he could feel buzzing in the air. Something huge was about to happen and it had butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
“Chuuya,” Verlaine called as he was walking by, “Chief wants to see you when you finish dropping your things off in your office space.”
“Okay, thanks Paul.” Chuuya said as he gave his brother a small bow of his head in respect, earning himself a soft chuckle and his hair -that he spent a long time fixing, thank you very much- messed with in passing, then Verlaine was gone as quickly and silently as he’d arrived.
Huffing under his breath, Chuuya went about prepping for the day. He went for his office space first, starting the process of setting down his work bag and setting out the paperwork he had taken home to finish up. It hadn’t been detrimental paperwork, just some basic papers that have nothing to really do with the precinct and everything to do with.. A personal project. A private case he started and is determined to finish on his own for his own peace of mind.
“Chuu~ya!” A voice sang from next to him.Turning Chuuya met Tachihara’s grinning face and he quirked a brow at the other ginger.
“You seem way too happy to be here. What’s going on?” Chuuya asked as he narrowed his eyes at his work partner suspiciously.
“Oh, nothing much, just overheard the boss. Seems like someone is about to get the chance to really prove himself and get the biggest undercover mission to date~” Tachihara sang with a bright smile on his face waving the file he was carrying to his own desk. “You better go, he’s waiting to debrief you in his office.”
Chuuya rolled his eyes before shaking his head and carefully shouldering past Tachihara. “Alright, alright, I’m going, I’m going,” He said with a wave of his hand over his shoulder, ignoring the responding laughter.
A big mission..? He hasn’t heard of any big uprisings in the underground, yet. There’s no big gang activity, and his personal infobroker hasn’t depicted any up and coming criminal organizations, so Chuuya hasn’t a clue what this “big job” his coworkers are implying he will be sent on is, plus if it’s a big job, shouldn’t it be kept less public? Chuuya doesn’t know why or how two people have notified him about this possible job when not even one other person knows about it until Chuuya has been debriefed and then the very select few officers joining him as backup will be chosen and filled in. The less people who know, the better. It makes it easier to keep it secret.
Shaking his head, Chuuya turns for Murase’s office leaving Tachihara behind to deal with whatever case he, too, had been given.
Chuuya didn’t miss the way Tachihara watched him. He didn’t miss the way those hazel eyes dragged up and down his body, making goosebumps sprout on Chuuya’s arms as he quickly walked away.
“One day..” Tachihara whispered to himself, “..one day.”
..Chuuya did miss the second pair of eyes watching him walk away with hungry eyes and a hum under their breath while they wet their lips. “Not if I beat you to her first, Tachihara..”
Walking into Murase’s office is always a daunting matter. Murase was the reason Chuuya got the chance to join the academy, to become an officer, a detective, a top achieving undercover agent. Murase is the reason Chuuya is where he is today. Chuuya knows he owes a lot to his boss, so walking into his office is always nerve wracking. The fear of disappointing or failing the man is always the driving force in what he does and all that he achieves.
He is at the top of his field purely from the fear of failure. He hasn’t been officially diagnosed, but Rimbaud has told him time, and time again that he most certainly has Kakorrhaphiophobia; the persistent, irrational, and abnormal fear of failure. He is a perfectionist at heart and will take any and all criticism seriously, going as far as running himself ragged just to perfect even the smallest of issues in a report or mission plan.
Failure was never an option for him. He wouldn’t allow it to be.
..so Rimbaud very well could be right, but Chuuya stubbornly remains ignorant to the idea of having a genuine fear of failure..
With a deep breath, Chuuya continued farther into the nice, spacious office. Usually detectives, cops, and chiefs of police didn’t have big offices, but Murase had decided he needed a white board, a pin board, and a little coffee bar in his office since he’s here all the time. Much like Chuuya he’s a bit of a workaholic and often doesn’t leave his office when in the middle of doing his own reports and debriefings to individual agents in his organization.
“Boss, you wanted to see me?” Chuuya asked as he walked closer to the desk, taking a seat directly in front of it when prompted.
“Yes, I have your next assignment here.” Murase held up a manila folder for Chuuya to see before passing it over to the redhead. “It’s to infiltrate a rapidly rising gang in the city.”
“Oh? A rising gang? You don’t usually give me budding gang takeouts, nor do we usually target gangs since it’s a headache and a half to deal with. Why now? Why this gang in particular?” Chuuya asked as he opened the folder and began scanning the contents.
“It’s a request from the governor. Mr Tsushima requested we take it out. He claims it’s a danger to the city and that he will deal with whatever headache is presented to us while we aim to disband and arrest the little group.” Murase wasn’t looking at Chuuya as he spoke, instead staring at his laptop screen where the emailed request was. “He emailed me this morning.”
Chuuya hummed as he flipped through the file, his eyebrows scrunching together the farther in he got.
“Is this the leader?” Chuuya asked as he pointed at the only photograph in the file.
“It’s speculated to be, yes. The gang is called The Setting Sun. We don’t know their goals, nor what their leader actually looks like. From what we can tell, he has incredibly basic features. His hair is a shaggy brown, he’s fairly tall, much like the rest of the people in his little group, and while we haven’t actually confirmed it, the gender is assumed to be male, based on body shape.” Murase says, his gaze returning to Chuuya, gauging his reaction to the new information.
“Assumed. Got it. So chances are it could very well still be a woman no matter body shape or, oh what did Kurotsuka say? Ah, right, ability to make a woman succumb to his will because apparently all men wish to dominate women.” Chuuya grumbled with a deadpanned expression aimed at his boss.
He isn’t usually the type to argue with his boss since he has a pretty good track record with trusting people he respects blindly, and all, but he also doesn’t like the way the police force often takes gender into consideration when talking about behavior, or from random blurry photos when tracking a person. Unless there is definitive proof, then guessing a gender is stupid. Any woman can make themselves look more masculine with makeup, clothes, vocal training, or medicines while a man can make himself look more feminine by using shapewear, makeup, and wigs. Chuuya has done both before. He has found ways around all gender body-type norms.
So any file claiming the gender is assumed while not proven with actual DNA for record purposes and the criminals themselves what they prefer, Chuuya never actually takes it into consideration. Especially when it comes to his enemies and targets. No matter the gender, people can be strong and ruthless.
Murase sighed, his gaze lowering to his desk in exasperation. “Right, fine. Whatever you say, Chuuya, but it isn’t being stricken from the record no matter what argument you give. It helps us narrow down the suspect list and gives us a basis to our fellow officers while they’re on patrol so they can keep an eye out. Even if everything else about the suspect is basic and normal to everyone else in the streets, it still narrows down the suspect list, somewhat.”
Chuuya huffed and rolled his eyes, but he didn’t say anything else, he just nodded and crossed his arms over his chest. “Fine. Anything else or can I go figure out my disguise now?”
“Actually,” Murase said, grabbing the file, again, and opening it up to a page towards the back. “Your disguise has already been figured out, with help from Tachihara, of course.” The rest of the debriefing was rather short lived, and yet by the end, Chuuya felt exhausted. He can already tell this case is going to be a headache and a half to deal with.
“I’m going to hate this job, I can already tell.” Chuuya grumbled as he left Murase’s office, file in hand and footsteps not the calm and quiet he trained himself into maintaining, then sat at his desk to finish up any last minute paperwork he had. He is to leave in the morning, in disguise and in character. His biggest case, his most difficult to accomplish disguise since his personality is quite the opposite of what’s being demanded of him. He isn’t sure he can do it, but he has to, and so he will.
With that thought Chuuya stood and left the precinct to go back to his apartment to get ready for the case of a lifetime.
