When I speak, I usually find a way to fuck it up somehow. My thoughts come right out of me, like they’re not actually in my brain at all but forming on the tip of my tongue. Other times, I don’t say enough, or anything. When it matters.

My friends and family are great, and they think they know me. I shouldn’t say that. They do know me. But there’s this expectation, I suppose. They roll their eyes when they hear me talk, as if they know what I’m going to say before the words are out of my mouth.
Sometimes I just get tired of that. I get tired in general.

But writing… everything about the way I communicate changes when I write. It’s a possession. The characters speak themselves onto the screen. Their emotions, intentions… secrets. I plot things out, of course. I make outlines, I draw shitty fantasy maps. But at the end of the day, a story isn’t a story without the characters. It’s like they find me, not the other way around. They find me, and they tell me what they’re feeling.

The crazy thing is, most times, I don’t even know those have been my feelings all along until the story takes form. Those are the kind of thoughts I can actually process instead word vomiting them all over everyone, or worse, keeping them in until I don’t know they’ve been there at all. When I put on a mask and offer them as someone else’s words, it all clicks. He cried, she muttered, they confessed, etc. etc. I don’t know why it happens the way it does.

Life just passes us by so quickly, you know? For so long, all I knew was smalltown life in Indiana. It still feels like just yesterday that that was my whole world. Now I’m here, and I realize the world is so much vaster and full of life and experiences and mistakes and misery than I ever could’ve imagined. Yet sometimes I wake up, and there’s that split second where I think my mom is going to shout through my bedroom door that breakfast is ready. I bite my tongue when I get the urge to tell her I’ll be down in a minute. I won’t be, because I haven’t been there in years.

I could be stranded on an island, and eventually I’d have to make a tool so I can etch words into the trees there. Or if I was too scared to venture inland, I’d just use my hand and dip my fingers into the sand. It’s that or talk to myself until I go insane, and even then, it would make less sense than writing it down in the sand. Even if nobody ever read it. Even it all washed away. I’d have to write it all out anyway.

Your art isn’t silly. I never really got into it until recently, as you know, but romance is great. Can the tropes be recycled to an excessive point? Sure. But that almost makes it better, because the best of romance is the best of it all. If the characters stand out, if they feel real… that’s special stuff. And the fact that you made these characters really says something. It inspired me to write a story that could damn near turn into a novel. Maybe that’s why I called you an art sorcerer. Your art is magical.
