Chapter Text

Episode 1 ‘Boyfriend burns down a church’: behind the scenes/interviews with the cast

“We have the whole cast here tonight for the first episode shoot,” Garcello’s ghost explains to the handheld camera. He looks out at the church as the cast for Funkin’ High messes around/gets ready for filming. “Here’s a fun fact: my funeral was actually going to be held here before people realized that I didn’t actually die. I’m just a ghost now, which kinda counts as being alive. I could take control of my body if I wanted to , though, and I do most of the time. It's actually in the casket over there.” He points to the stage where the casket is. It wasn’t open, for privacy reasons.

Now we cut to Sarvente and Ruv sitting at one of the tables as they made sure their costumes were correct. “This was the actual funeral setup for Garcello that I had planned,” She stated as she examined herself in a small mirror. “Until he came to me as a ghost and said that ‘he was all good.’” Ruv exhaled out of his nose at that. “So now we can use it for the show, I guess.”

~~~
Now we have the star, Boyfriend, standing near the end of the room with his good friend, Nova (Nova and Jasmine were asked to be in the first episodes of Funkin’ High, although they were busy getting their music career off of the ground. That didn’t stop Nova from showing up on set the first day, though).
Aldryx, the holder of the shaky camera, walked up the them as they talked (well, one of them did). “Yo, Boyfriend! Nervous?” Aldryx asked from behind the camera. The constraint between Nova was somewhat comedic. Boyfriend was in his on-screen costume, a bright red suit, while Nova was dressed in Monotone colors. Boyfriend shrugged before showing off his Funkin’ High acceptance letter.
“No, but I have this sick prop.” He showed off his prop as Nova pretended to grab the top of the paper and rip it in half. He and Boyfriend laughed.
~
At the front of the room, the stage, Daddy Dearest was going over his lines with his loving wife. Carol, holding her phone camera, went up to them as they practiced. Dearest looked at the camera and flipped it off with amusement. Mearest just posed for a moment.
“How do you feel about your parts?” Carol asked them. Dearest chuckled.
”The part of the comically evil piece of shit? Sounds fun,” Dearest chortled.
“I have an excuse to yell at our daughter’s boyfriend, now,” Mearest added with a smirk.
~
At one of the tables scattered throughout the set sat Sunday and Pico, along with Agoti and Ayana standing beside them.
“I love how I have, like, one line in this episode,” Pico joked sarcastically. “Sunday has a bigger role than the star’s ex.”
”Speak for yourself,” Ayana scoffed from beside them. “All I have is a worried look until, like, episode 8.”
"I think I'm just here because Aldryx has a decent role in this one," Agoti admitted as he scratched the back of his neck. "I know I'll start popping off soon, though."
"What can I say?" Sunday shrugged. "Marxism has its perks."
"Let the record show that Marxism has nothing to do with it," Pico added with a nerd voice.
~
The camera footage then began to show the cast sitting around, with Boyfriend to the side and the camera crew equipment visible to his right. "I'm about to accidentally burn a funeral," He said to the camera with a laugh. "That should set the tone, I think. Hell of a way to start a show." Boyfriend grabbed the lighter that would be the instrument of all of his character's problems.
"Did Garcello say you can touch his lighter?" Aldryx asked from behind the camera with a snicker.
"No, I didn't." Boyfriend yelped when he realized Garcello was floating behind him. Garcello and Aldryx busted out laughing.
~
For the footage of a church being burned to the ground, Girlfriend and Carol offered to make a miniature that could be burned.
"Now we just need to stand outside in the cold while Dearest yells at Boyfriend," Ayana chuckled to Carol's camera before Carol turned it to show Dearest and Boyfriend going through how the scene was going to play out. Boyfriend seemed to say something funny, which made Dearest chuckle.
"It better not take more than one take," Agoti complained. Carol laughed.
"If it does?" She inquired.
"I can damn well leave."
~~~

Boyfriend, Aldryx, Whitty, Sarvente, and Sunday at Garcello's casket. Whitty shot a glare at Boyfriend as he approached, but apparently forgot his line (he was supposed to say 'Look who it is', but he never did end up saying it in a take that made it into the final cut.) Sunday instead said hers (What's with the red?)

 "But, uh, the red isn't TOO bright, is it? I mean, look at him. His skin is the same color as my clothes," Boyfriend spoke as he motioned towards Aldryx, who turned to look down at Boyfriend.

"Racist ass," Aldryx snickered. Boyfriend and the others grinned before breaking into laughter.

"Cut!"

"He has a point," Sarvente said as the camera swerved away.

"Yeah, but I can't do the scene with that b.s," Whitty replied with a laugh as they got ready to redo the scene.

~~~
Boyfriend, Carol, Ayana, and Dearest stood at Garcello's memorial.
"What's your name?" Dearest asked Boyfriend with a serious tone.
"It's, uh, Boyfriend, sir." Dearest raised an eyebrow.
"Funny. My daughter's name is Girlfriend..." He snickered. "Seems a little too perfect, doesn't it?" Boyfriend smirked, ready to play along.
"Well, I wouldn't say that," He replied.
"I heard that!" Girlfriend yelled from somewhere else on the set. Dearest and Boyfriend walked off-screen as they laughed.
~~~

The entirety of the cast stood outside of the church as the production was flickering lights to simulate fire's lighting.

"Now Garcello isn't going to be at peace!" Right after Sarvente said that a ghostly puff could be heard from behind them. Everyone turned their attention back to the burning church, to see an actual ghost coming out from the smoke. In fact, most of the smoke seemed to be coming from the ghost itself.

Silence. Everyone turned to look at Tabi.

"Line!" Tabi yelled, causing his fellow actors to break character.

"I'll give you a hint," Garcello laughed as he motioned to himself.

"You couldn't remember your single line?" Carol asked jokingly.

"Hey, it's nerve-wracking," Tabi shrugged. "Let's run it back!" He yelled with a clap.

Funkin' High pilot post-release footage

The cast would be staying at a luxury hotel during filming of the show. After the pilot was released, footage was posted showing the cast doing whatever.

"The first episode did well," Ruv explained from his relaxed position on his bed as Whitty walked up to him with a camera. "Which is weird. I was barely even there."

"Maybe that's why it did well?" Pico suggested from off-camera. Ruv rolled his eyes and looked away from the camera.

The camera cut to a different part of the room, now showing Boyfriend and Whitty sitting on a couch on their phones.

"We have the photoshoot later," Boyfriend said to the camera.

"But first we were gonna go hang out in the city for a couple of hours," Whitty added as he stood up, his upper body getting cut off in the video.

"Who's we?" Ruv asked, presumably in the same spot as before.

"Yeah, we're gonna force you to come along," Pico chuckled from behind the camera.

"Good luck with that one," Boyfriend joked.

~~~
"I doubt we're gonna all go as one group," Tabi spoke as Aldryx filmed himself, Tabi, Agoti, and Ayana in the lobby of the hotel. "You know how many supporting actors there are?"
Aldryx laughed. "Pfft, there ain't that many," he replied, recording himself in front of some nifty decor on the ground floor. "It's, what? 15 people or something? That's nothing!"
"15 people isn't even a high enough number to count all of the boys in the damn show," he retorted, standing in front of him with his arms crossed. "There's no way in hell you're gonna head out with every single cast member at once."
"C'mon man!" He nudged Tabi with his shoulder. "You've been in larger projects, eh? Like, what about, what was it, Moving On? That has a way larger cast! You must've all gone out for something."
He shook his head. "When we did anything all together, it was something we did at the studio, where everyone already was," he answered. "If I ever went out with anyone, it was a small group."
Aldryx scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Ugh, you're no fun, Tabs."
~~~

”I think we could get into comic con at this rate,” Ayana joked as Carol recorded Sunday lying in her bed. She rolled her eyes as she tossed a pillow to Carol and Sunday. “Look, She doesn’t want to go out, because she’s tired,” Ayana said, motioning toward Sunday in her majestic position

”I think one of my blankets got burned by accident.” Sunday’s random joke was not true, she had all of her blankets kept safe and protected by Sunday at all costs.

”Boyfriend didn’t even actually set a fire. How would that happen?” Carol asked, failing to hold back a laugh. Sunday replied with a muffled groan as she turned to lace face down on the bed.

~~~
”Since the first episode was really just to get things started, the photoshoot will really just be focused on Me, Boyfriend, and my parents,” Girlfriend explained as she adjusted her earrings in a mirror. “You all will be there too, obviously. I’m sure the audience loves a good supporting cast.”
“I was also hoping we could get the entire cast to go out to lunch after the shoot,” Girlfriend continued as she took a small step back from the mirror.
“That would be fun!” Carol said with a smile, moving the camera to face the mirror as she examined herself as Girlfriend backed up. “I’m sure there’s probably somewhere with a big table for us,” She joked.
”I’m sure the guys would be down to bra food,” Sarvente spoke up as she passed behind Girlfriend and Carol. “Except Ruv, who doesn’t really eat that much. Or socialize. So basically he won’t want to.”
”But it’ll be fun!” Girlfriend said. “He can hold your hand the whole time, and he’ll probably be fine.” Sarvente blushed and giggled.
~~~

"While the kids are out having fun, I figured I'd grab the adults and we could have a nice time here at the hotel," Garcello (in his human body) said to his phone camera as it showed him lying on a couch before he flipped the camera to show Daddy Dearest and Solazar through a hole in the wall between the kitchen and the den cooking up a large meal. Solazar glanced to see Garcello recording and simply chuckled.

"It'd be nice if you helped us cook!" Dearest laughed as he threw spices on a steak.  Garcello simply snickered and flipped the back over to himself lying on the couch. "I thought we could smoke this steak." The three men laughed.

"You could just let me hold it, and I can cook it real quick," Solazar said off-handedly. Garcello flipped the camera yet again to show Mommy Mearest and Nikusa sitting on a couch perpendicular to Garcello's, laughing quietly.

"What a chill night," Garcello said to the camera as he put a cigarette in his mouth before ending his video.

A montage of the young cast members' time in the city, and then the photo shoot with Taylor Swift playing in the background was edited by Carol and subsequently posted online for all to see. Since she liked recording her friends, and since the first videos did quite well, she figured that it wouldn’t hurt to record all of the episodes’ behind-the-scenes footage.

Episode 2 ‘Getting into a fight on the first day of school’: behind the scenes

We’re here at… CBS studio center, Los Angeles,” Pico explained to Carol as he and Sunday looked out at the set: The school hallway. “Boyfriend is filming the part of him walking in the school and bumping into Tabi.”

“Hence the name of the episode.” Sunday held up her copy of the script with the same name as the episode. “Oh look, they’re about to do the bump.” Sunday pointed past the camera to the set. The camera quickly turned to show some of the extras walking down the false hallway while Boyfriend accidentally bumped into Tabi.

~~~
Skid and Pump were clearly happy to be a part of the tv show, as made evident by their excessive bouncing up and down. The writers thought it would be easier just to have their on-screen costumes be the costumes they wore almost daily. Carol found this to be amusing and decided to quickly ask them some questions.
”Hey, guys!” Carol greeted as she walked up. The two costumed boys turned and smiled brightly.
”Hi, Carol!” They waved as they spoke in unison. Quite impressive, really.
~~~

Oh look, it’s Solazar sitting at his character’s desk while his students chattered before beginning to shoot the scene. Aldryx walked up to him as he studied his script. Solazar looked up and chuckled. “What? Never seen someone go over their lines?”

”You like your character?” Aldryx questioned with an audible smirk. Solazar chuckled quietly.

”It’s not bad. I have my moments, at least. Hopefully, I play a major role in an episode down the line.” Solazar shrugged and grabbed his mug of coffee (which doubled as a prop) for a quick sip.

“Places, everybody!” Yelled an off-camera director.

~~~
”How you feeling, Hex?” Carol asked the robot as she approached him while he scanned over the script in his hands. A grinning face appeared on his screen.
”Never better! I’m excited to be a part of a big project like this!” He spoke earnestly. “I love all my fellow actors!” Carol laughed, Hex’s constant good mood seemed to be contagious.
“How do you like your character?” She inquired.
“Well, my character seemed to be based on myself. I love that!” He answered as he pulled out a highlighter to mark all of his lines in the current episode.
~~~

Outside of the classroom, Tabi would purposefully bump into Boyfriend once more.

“What’s his deal?” Boyfriend inquired with a slightly annoyed tone as Hex walked up to him.

"Oh, Tabi? He used to date your girlfriend. Her dad also did not like that. That's why he has an invisible body and a skull for a head." Hex explained. "But he's pretty nice once you get to know him! Maybe it would be a little awkward..." He trailed off. Boyfriend sighed.

”That’s very spooky!” Skid yelled happily as he hopped up to Tabi. This was not his line.

“Spooky man with a spooky vibe!” Pump yelled, following Skid’s lead.

“Cut!” The director yells and the cast begins to laugh.

“What?” Skid and Pump asked innocently.  “We said our lines!”

~~~
”We have a fight scene in this episode,” Tabi tells the camera as he and Boyfriend sit at the same table with drinks in their hands. “Should be simple enough. I already want to fight the guy.” He smirked at Boyfriend, he shook his head.
”They want it to be improvised like an actual school fight,”  Boyfriend tells Aldryx behind the camera. “I haven’t actually been in a fight before, so that’ll be fun.”
”I’ve been in a lot,” Tabi added. He and Boyfriend laughed.
“If I need to, I could defend myself,” Boyfriend said to the camera with a smug look. Tabi scoffed.
”Please. You’d keep swinging at my knees if we fought,” Tabi joked. Boyfriend scoffed.
“Not true. I’m at least to your shoulders,” Boyfriend joked.
“Sure…” Aldryx commented. Tabi laughed. “How many takes do you think it’ll take?”
”I could get it in one. I don’t know about my co-star, though…” Boyfriend shrugged. Tabi flicked his hat off.
~~~

“Yooo, my second episode in a row.” Sunday crossed her arms as Pico rolled his eyes. They stood to the side of the set having a little lunch when Carol had walked up with the camera. “I’m just like that, you know?”

”The star is biased because I’m his ex,” Pico replied with a chuckle.

“I even get to insult Boyfriend’s height. How is that biased?” Sunday asked, leaning onto Pico.

“Cuz I said,” He smirked at her before pretending to elbow her in the face. Sunday replied by pretending to have a broken nose. “At least I get to instigate a fight.”

~~~
“My role in this episode is to, uh, basically do what I normally do: nothing,” Garcello laughed as Aldryx recorded him lying down on a couch behind the set.
”You always play the lazy character?” Aldryx asked, somewhat rhetorically.
“I guess it’s a bit of type-cast, but I’m not complaining.” Garcello shrugged, not bothering to stand up for Aldryx’s video. “In fact, I don’t think I have a big role for a while.” Aldryx chuckled.
~~~

“Slow-mo fight real quick,” Boyfriend said to Tabi and they refused to take recording the scene seriously. Tabi went for a slow-motion swing to Boyfriend’s head, who slowly dodged it and went for a slow-motion jab at the ribs.

“Cut!”

”Are the fights usually this slow?” Pico asked nobody in particular.

“It’s for effect,” Whitty added with a smirk. “Aaand now they’re dancing.” Carol panned her camera to show that Boyfriend and Tabi were, in fact, dancing. Pico cackled.

“I don’t think that’s in the script,” Tankman said as he pushed through the crowd of extras.

”Yes it is,” Tabi replied as he broke his dance with Boyfriend. He motioned to somebody off-camera and somebody brought him a script. “Boyfriend and Tabi slow dance romantically,” He read in a monotone voice.

~~~
“I successfully broke up a fight!” Hex said to Aldryx happily as the crew behind him packed up their things. It seemed they were finished with their shoot for the day. “I do this a lot outside of the set, too.”
”And it’s usually the same two people, believe it or not,” Agoti added with a smirk as he walked past the two. Hex’s smile became a bit nervous.
“Get outta here, idiot!” Aldryx yelled lovingly to his brother, who busted out laughing.
”Well… he’s not entirely wrong.” Hex rubbed the back of his mechanical neck. “Although I’m not sure how real they are, Boyfriend and Tabi end up scrapping a lot.”
“Yo, you got a fucking problem, dude?” Spoke a voice with a thick Russian accent behind Hex. Aldryx panned over to see Boyfriend and Tabi in exaggerated fighting positions. Tabi fake swung at Boyfriend, purposefully going way over his head.
“Oh. They’re at it again,” Hex laughed nervously as he watched Boyfriend point to Ruv, supposedly for help. Ruv held up Boyfriend by the armpits to be at eye-level with Tabi, much to the amusement of everyone watching.
~~~

As of late, that is all the footage released by Carol and Aldryx. Other cast members have recorded their share of behind-the-scenes footage for later episodes and have yet to release it to the public. The fans can’t wait!

Notes:

Since Funkin High Season 1 (yes you read that correctly) is actually about to end, I decided to do some cleanup and move this chapter where it belongs: elsewhere.

Probably more of this one day, with chapters commentated by me and the characters, deleted scenes, and more gag reels
