Solicitous and Sneaky

Summary:

Tobira-sensei has been away forever and Kagami has been looking after Mada-shishou in his absence, but now Tobira-sensei is on his way home . . . Kagami has one more thing to do, for both of them.

Notes:

Written for GYWO Yahtzee 2026, prompt: grumpy
(my fifth roll - scoring as Sevens)

Work Text:

‟Hey hey, whoa!”

Kagami paused, looking around to find one of the ninja who ran around the Tower with messages and files and such for higher, more important people approaching him; he didn’t recognise this one, so they probably weren’t very good at much. Kagami followed Tobira-sensei and Mada-shishou around, spent days in the Tower - the offices or the labs, at least - often enough to know the ones who were. Especially since none of Kagami’s grown-ups suffered fools gladly, as Mito-ba would say.

‟You don’t want to go in there.” the nin said with a little smile, and Kagami tilted his head. ‟He’s in a mood.”

Kagami blinked, then rolled his eyes and turned away again.

‟Hey! Uchiha-sama is really- Um.”

Kagami smothered amusement at the suddenly faltering voice. Maybe they’d just noticed that Mada-shishou’s door was not closed, and were afraid he would hear any comments.

Anyway, Kagami wasn’t stupid - he wasn’t afraid of his Mada-shishou, no matter how grouchy he might get, and never would be. Mada-shishou would burn the foundations of the world to keep those he loved safe - and he wouldn’t hurt anyone in the village without a really good reason, anyway. And Mada-shishou might be grumpy right now, but Kagami also knew why.

Not that Kagami would hesitate to go to him and try to cheer up - or at least occupy - his Mada-shishou anyway, and he and Hikaku-sama had been working together to make sure he rested and ate and spent time sparring over the past couple of months, but today. . .

Kagami tapped on the door frame, and when Mada-shishou barked an order to stop fucking around and either get in or go he slipped inside and presented himself in front of Mada-shishou’s desk.

Bent over a large scroll, frowning at it, Mada-shishou took a few moments to raise his head. ‟Kagami!” He paused, then sighed, grimacing. ‟I’m sorry.”

Kagami shrugged, unbothered, and skipped around Mada-shishou’s desk. He smiled, small but real, as he pushed away from it and turned to face Kagami, giving Kagami his full attention.

‟I just saw Reimiryoku-sama coming back in,” Kagami reported, ‟she’s been out on border patrol.”

Mada-shishou’s lips twitched as he arched a brow. ‟Were you supposed to know that?”

Kagami grinned brightly, the innocent beyond suspicion one that Izuna-sama had taught him, and Mada-shishou laughed. Border patrol assignments weren’t exactly restricted information, but they weren’t exactly open either. But Kagami knew lots of things - lots more than most people thought, except his Mada-shishou and Tobira-sensei.

. . .and maybe Hikaku-sama, of course, and nobody got anything past Reimiryoku-sama or Mito-ba, not ever. Not even with Izuna-sama’s best innocent look or Kagami’s sneaky.

‟Very well. What did Reimiryoku-sama have to say?” Mada-shishou paused, cocking his head. ‟Did she offer to take you for a day in her lab or the training fields? I know you’ve been bored with me busy and-”

‟Reimiryoku-sama saw Tobira-sensei at the border.” Kagami interrupted, and Mada-shishou took a sharp breath. ‟He was heading to his last point when they crossed paths.”

Mada-shishou flexed his fingers, suddenly lit with energy even though he moved no more than that.

Kagami grinned, bouncing on the balls of his feet.

Tobira-sensei would be home very soon - Tobira-sensei was very fast, and he’d promised Reimiryoku-sama that he would be heading back the day after he saw her.

‟. . .and she also offered to let me tag along tomorrow when she’s back to working in the Tower. If that’s all right?” Kagami asked, tipping his head. ‟She said she’d teach me something new!”

Mada-shishou laughed, reaching out to ruffle his hair. Kagami smiled and butted into his hand. ‟Yes, my little mischief, you may spend the day with Reimiryoku if she has offered to teach you.”

Kagami nodded happily, and Mada-shishou cupped his cheek for a moment, then let him go. Mada-shishou glanced back at the scroll on his desk, nose scrunching, then turned firmly away from it. ‟Since you’re here - lunch with me today?”

Kagami bounced and agreed, and Mada-shishou rose, stretching - Kagami squinted as several of his joints cracked; he had probably been sitting there since Kagami last saw him, and this was why Kagami and Hikaku-sama and sometimes Izuna-sama had been poking at him so much, he thought, exasperated.

Mada-shishou shooed Kagami out ahead of him, closing his office door and sealing it. Kagami hummed, trotting along in his wake.

And if Reimiryoku-sama’s sharp mouth had showed a hint of a knowing smile when she offered to keep Kagami’s company for the day . . . the day when Tobira-sensei was almost certain to return . . . well, Kagami had missed his Tobira-sensei very much too, and couldn’t wait to see him - but Kagami would be happy to let Tobira-sensei relax alone with Mada-shishou for the day.

Kagami bumped lightly into Mada-shishou’s side, and he ruffled Kagami’s hair with an absent hand, then let it rest there, keeping Kagami close.

‟I missed you, my love.” Madara said, for at least the fifth time since Tobirama had returned, nosing against his lover’s collarbone. Tobirama hummed softly, warm and relaxed, fingers tangled in Madara’s hair. ‟I am no longer used to being without you,” he said wryly, swaying, drawing back just enough to look up and meet Tobirama’s eyes, ‟not for so long.”

Tobirama sighed, tugging at Madara to keep him close, bowing his head to rest their brows together. ‟Nor I, koibito.” he said, voice low and still carrying a note of weariness that had little to do with physical effort. ‟I did not appreciate being obliged to do so again.”

Madara drew him into a kiss, and Tobirama made a little purring sound as he returned it.

‟I missed our sparkling as well, but I cannot be sorry he’s out for the day and you are not.” Tobirama admitted, slightly breathless, as their lips parted. ‟Though I’m surprised he left, honestly.”

‟Upset he didn’t cling to you?” Madara asked, teasing gently. ‟Refuse to be parted from you again?”

Tobirama shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. ‟No, he did quite enough of that this morning. I hardly feel unloved. And I’m sure he will again tonight-”

‟Probably for at least a week.” Madara corrected, and Tobirama snorted, lips twitching.

‟Likely.” Tobirama admitted, smile growing. ‟No, I am only surprised. Though I’m glad he was happy to go, even with the promise of an exciting new lesson to tempt him. And not solely because I’m pleased to have you to myself for a time.” he teased. ‟Truly, it’s good he’s not so fretful after one of us has been away, especially considering. . .”

‟It is.” Madara said softly, with a pang in his chest. He couldn’t regret having their sparkling, no matter how he had come to them, but it had been a tragedy that took Kagami’s parents.

Tobirama hummed, nuzzling his cheek, and Madara shook his head, smiling at his lover; he was fine, the pang an old one.

‟You know Reimiryoku will keep a good watch on him.” Madara said, then paused, a thought occurring to him. He laughed. ‟Our ridiculous, clever little one. . .”

Tobirama arched an eyebrow.

‟He’s the one who told me Reimiryoku had run into you, that you were on your way back - and then asked if it was all right he go with her today.” Madara said, and Tobirama was silent for a moment, then chuckled. ‟He left us alone a-purpose.”

‟Mito has been trying to teach him to be subtle.” Tobirama said, light with laughter. ‟She would be pleased.”

She had, Madara remembered, and frankly it filled him with terror.

‟Perhaps he’ll brag to her about it. Wager he’ll contrive to spend tomorrow with her?” Madara suggested wryly, and Tobirama laughed again, even as he drew Madara in again, nuzzling and catching him into another kiss.
