Scene Three
Mr Lamb’s garden [Garden sounds: the noise of a branch shifting; apples
thumping down; the branch shifting again.]
Mr Lamb: Steady....that’s....got it. That’s it... [More apples fall]
And again. That’s it....and....
[A creak. A crash. The ladder falls back, Mr Lamb with it.
A thump. The branch swishes back. Creaks. Then silence.
Derry opens the garden gate, still panting.]
Derry: You see, you see! I came back. You said I wouldn’t and
they said....but I came back, I wanted....
[He stops dead. Silence.]
Mr Lamb, Mr....You’ve.....
[He runs through the grass. Stops. Kneels]
Mr Lamb, It’s all right....You fell....I’m here,
Mr Lamb, It’s all right.
[Silence]
I came back. Lamey-Lamb. I did.....come back.
[Derry begins to weep.]
Mr. Lamb: [groans] Ay kid, you... you came...
Derry: You're alive! You're alright! Thank God. I was so worried you'd-
Mr. Lamb: Shush now boy and help me up my feet.
Derry: [sighs] Of course, Mr. Lamb.
Mr. Lamb: No cynical comment about how the world is unfair to us misfits because if I'd been normal, I wouldn't have fallen?
Derry: [grins] Not right now, for your sake.
Mr. Lamb: [smiling] And he smiles…
Derry: Let’s get you to a doctor to check for concussions.
Derry takes Mr. Lamb to the doctor, where they’re told Mr. Lamb, thankfully, did not sustain any major injuries apart from a few bruises and could be discharged.
Derry: I’ve decided.
Mr. Lamb: What, my boy?
Derry: I am going to stay with you tonight, in case you might need assistance.
Mr. Lamb: Don’t be kidding! I’ve been living alone since long before you were born. Besides, what about your mother, wouldn’t want to trouble her, eh?
Derry: I… I ran out of my home. I came here without her permission. She was so adamant that I shouldn’t come here but she doesn’t understand. I had to come to you. If I go back…
Mr. Lamb: Alright, my boy. Stay here as long as you’d like to, my doors are always open for you.
