Work Text:
Foggy had no idea why he applied for a job he was wildly unqualified for. Maybe he thought it was good practice for pretending he was ready for a position he was clearly not ready for. Maybe it was because his mom always told him he could be whatever he wanted to be. Or maybe he thought it wasn’t a hard job at all, because there would be a whole team and he couldn’t mess this up all by himself.
Whatever it was, Foggy needed a job and he didn’t want to work at his family’s butcher shop anymore. He wanted something different that still left him with enough time for studying. Nobody became a lawyer without a copious amount of studying. Well, maybe not nobody, but definitely not him.
He got invited for an interview. Foggy read the letter again, just to be sure, but the words didn’t change. They actually wanted to get to know him. Foggy laughed. And then he wondered if they would take one look at him and then deem him unqualified for the job. But at least he knew how to write proper applications. Success.
He went to the interview in his best shirt and favorite tie but decided against a suit jacket last minute. He had the feeling it would be too much for the occasion. And the jacket could only hide so much of his body anyway.
Foggy usually tried not to think too much of how he could be perceived based on his size and he would like to say he wasn’t self-conscious about it, but maybe it was just another thing he was good at pretending. He mostly ignored it. And he was not a teenager anymore getting bullied for not being able to run faster. Besides, they had stopped being mean when Foggy threatened them with his baseball bat. Would he have used it to bash their heads in? Probably not. But it had scared them enough anyway.
He took a deep breath before entering the building and put on a smile that he didn’t feel. The friendly woman at the front desk told Foggy where to go, and he took the elevator to the fourth floor.
Out of a room at the end of the hallway he saw a man walking toward him and the elevator. He was tall, wore a t-shirt that showed his massive arms and tattoos, and looked like a bodybuilder. Foggy considered simply taking the elevator down again with him. What the hell had he been thinking about this job?
When the man walked past Foggy, he said, “Good luck, boy. Don’t expect too much though. The guy is an asshole, just so you know.”
Foggy blinked in confusion, but before he could ask who the man was talking about, he was already in the elevator. Usually, HR people were not rude to their interview partners. Quite the opposite from what Foggy had experienced. They were looking for people to hire, after all.
He knocked on the door and was told to enter, so he did. It was a sparse, but bright room with a large window front and plants on the sills. Otherwise, only tables and chairs. There was a whiteboard on the wall and in front of it two people at a table – a black woman and a white man wearing sunglasses.
“Thanks for following our invitation, please sit down,” the woman said and gestured to the empty chair in front of her.
Foggy sat down.
“I’m Kirsten McDuffie, you may call me Kirsten. Is it okay if I call you Franklin, Mr. Nelson?” she asked with a smile.
“Foggy, please,” he said automatically, and Kirsten nodded.
“Foggy then. And you know Matt already,” she said and pointed at the man next to her.
She was right. Foggy knew Matt Murdock. Pretty much everyone did since he released his album. Foggy remembered how he had heard Matt’s first song for the very first time. It had been beautiful. A lot of people had thought Matt would become one of those one-hit-wonders who disappeared as quickly as they showed up, but he had proved them wrong.
Matt had the voice of an angel, played the piano, and was blind. Foggy didn’t know much more about Matt other than him being from Hell’s Kitchen, just like him. And that he had saved a man when he was a kid and that made him lose his eye sight. Most people from his community still saw him as a local hero rather than a famous singer.
It should’ve struck him as unusual that Matt was there for the interview, but then again, it felt kind of fitting for him.
“I do,” Foggy said. “It’s a pleasure.”
Foggy regretted applying for the job the second he left the room. He had shaken Kirsten’s hand, then Matt’s, and he had been foolish enough to look back to Matt on his way out, only to see Matt looking in his direction, head tilted curiously. Foggy could feel his face heat up and heart race, and hurried out of the room.
He couldn’t believe muscle guy had called Matt an asshole. Matt was charming, polite, and he had smiled at Foggy in the most wonderful way possible. And Foggy would never see him again this close, let alone touch him.
They were looking for professional bodyguards, with experience, something Foggy didn’t have. Kirsten even pointed out he was young. She didn’t say he was too young, but it was clearly implied. The only point for him was his willingness to work on weekends and nightshifts. But Foggy knew it wouldn’t be enough. Even without them asking if he worked out or something similar.
When Kirsten called and told him he actually got the job, he couldn’t even stop himself before asking, “Why?”
Kirsten only laughed, “Ask Matt, not me. He made the final decision.”
Foggy promised himself he would do that, eventually. For now, he didn’t want to put too much thought into it and wanted to celebrate getting a new job.
And that’s how Foggy became Matt’s personal bodyguard, for three days per week.
Every Friday after his last class, Matt picked him up with his other bodyguard – Luke. A man like a bear who looked very intimidating and was not Foggy’s biggest fan due to his lack of experience, but Matt swore he had a heart of gold. And Matt trusted him with his life.
But Luke had also told Foggy if Matt trusted him, then he would, too. He had even offered to teach Foggy how to fight which Foggy had declined, but not because he wasn’t willing to learn, but… for an entirely different reason.
Matt was teaching Foggy how to box. Foggy wasn’t interested in boxing per se, but he figured it would be good to know a thing or two about fighting, just in case. But who was he kidding? He was mostly interested in watching Matt box. It was one of the most beautiful and powerful sights Foggy had ever seen. Also, seeing Matt sweaty and breathing heavily was what kept Foggy up at night and his hand moving, wondering what Matt’s hands could do to him. Or his mouth. Or his dick. Yeah, Foggy was into his boss. Who could blame him?
Matt didn’t know, obviously, and Foggy would never make a move for a lot of reasons – the power imbalance due to their work, general social status, or the fact that someone with Matt’s body was most likely not interested in someone with Foggy’s body. Foggy didn’t even know if Matt was into guys at all. He had fans of all genders, but there wasn’t an official statement about his sexuality.
And Foggy hardly knew anything about Matt’s past relationships. Karen had told him that she and Matt had dated for a bit but quickly realized they would be better as friends. Then Matt had hired her as his manager, and according to both of them that was Matt’s best decision during his musical career.
Foggy was a great fit for Matt’s team, he realized after a few weeks. Every single one of them was handpicked by Matt and was someone he trusted. When Foggy had asked about it, Matt had shrugged and told him he was just really good at reading people and knowing if they meant well or not. And then Foggy also wondered if Matt would tell people that directly during the interview and if that was what made bodybuilder-guy decide Matt was an asshole.
Foggy had even found the courage to ask why he was hired, and Matt had laughed and told him he liked Foggy’s voice. Foggy had never been more glad that Matt couldn’t see how hard he was blushing at those words. And thankfully Matt couldn’t tell how his heart was racing either.
It was ridiculously easy to fall for Matt, especially with how close Foggy had to be with him all the time. Guiding Matt was part of his job, so usually he had Matt’s hand on his elbow and narrated the surroundings for him. Maybe Matt liking his voice was more important than Foggy first had assumed. And if Foggy was good at one thing, it was talking. He would become a lawyer after all, and he wanted to excel in it.
Foggy was truly happy with his job. He liked his coworkers, his working hours lined up perfectly with his college schedule, and he had a steady income. And Matt was not just an incredible boss, he was just incredible. Everything he said or did or sang felt like a revelation and then Foggy found himself thinking about how sad he was gonna be when he eventually had to quit this job to pursue his own dreams. Matt would understand, obviously, but Foggy would be devastated for a while, knowing he would most likely not see Matt again in person, let alone be in touching-distance of him.
“You’re coming on summer tour with us, right?” Matt asked Foggy at the end of a team meeting, after everyone else had already left the room.
Foggy sighed, “I wish I could, Matt, but I gotta write a paper and prepare for exams and then I also have to write them.”
“The horrors,” Matt smirked.
“Exactly. I can’t be of much help, unfortunately, but hey, you play the last few shows in New York, so when you’re back home, I’ll be at your service again.” Foggy saluted at the end and told Matt so.
Matt laughed and said, “I’d rather have you with me the whole time, but I get it. Hopefully you have a productive summer break then.”
“I hope so, too,” he said and pretended his heart wasn’t aching over Matt’s words.
The summer was horrible. Foggy missed the team and he really would’ve liked going on tour with them. And most importantly, he missed Matt. He checked in with him pretty much every day, like he normally did when he wasn’t on shift, wondering if he annoyed Matt with his questions. But Matt excitedly told him about the locations, the acoustic, and how the fans camped in front of the arenas for him.
It suddenly reminded Foggy that Matt was a star. It wasn’t something Foggy constantly thought about when guiding Matt around or when they went boxing together. But Matt was famous and he needed protection. And Foggy felt bad for not being able to do that at the moment. He trusted Luke and the tour security team that they would never let anything happen to Matt, but it was still hard. So maybe Foggy also checked in with Matt to know he was okay. But they were friends, he was allowed to do that, right? Matt also cared about him. He asked about Foggy’s exams and what he was currently working on. He wouldn’t do that if he wasn’t interested in his life at all.
When Matt finally returned, Foggy was excited. He couldn’t wait to see him again and just… be around him. Foggy had promised to pick him up from the airport that night, so now he was waiting for him with all the other people waiting for their loved ones returning. He didn’t write a sign though. While Matt would probably find the idea hilarious, it was pointless after all.
Foggy smiled when he spotted Matt with the rest of the team, and he could tell the exact moment Luke told Matt that Foggy was there because then Matt looked up and into the crowd he couldn’t see, smiling in Foggy’s general direction. Oh God, Foggy would never be normal again about Matt, he knew that. It just wasn’t happening.
Foggy met Matt halfway and then drew him into a tight hug. He could tell Matt was a little surprised by how stiff he was, but then he melted into the embrace and also put his arms around Foggy. They stood there for a few seconds, Foggy enjoying the close contact and hoping Matt wasn’t embarrassed by this. Only when Luke coughed slightly, did Foggy finally let go.
“Welcome home,” he said.
At the same time Matt said, “I missed you.”
Foggy had almost missed it, but Matt’s blushing face told him he heard it correctly.
“I missed you, too, buddy,” Foggy said and clapped a hand on Matt’s shoulder. “Let’s get you home.”
Foggy usually left Matt at his doorstep without ever setting a foot into his apartment, but Matt had almost fallen asleep in the cab and was swaying dangerously, holding onto Foggy more for stabilization than guidance right now that Foggy didn’t want to leave him alone just yet.
“I’m just gonna make sure you’re getting to bed safely, okay?” Foggy mumbled after Matt tried and failed to unlock his door for the third time and Foggy took the key from him to let him in.
Matt nodded and made his way… somewhere, probably the bathroom, Foggy suspected. Foggy felt odd standing inside Matt’s apartment. It was huge, but also bare. There was nothing he could spot that screamed Matt to him, like his home had no personality. He knew Matt liked things tidy and at the same place to make it easier for him to find them again, but he didn’t think that Matt only owned the bare minimum.
The only part that stuck out was the massive billboard outside Matt’s window, flickering in different colors and illuminating the whole living room even in the middle of the night. It would be horrible for anyone except for Matt who had no light perception and was therefore not bothered by it.
When Matt returned, he stopped in his tracks for a moment, like he was surprised someone was in his apartment.
“You okay?” Foggy asked, and Matt nodded again.
“Fine. Tired.”
“I bet. You look like you could use at least twelve hours of sleep,” Foggy said and followed Matt into his bedroom which he realized a moment too late to turn around and offer to leave.
Matt didn’t seem bothered by it, simply undressed to his boxershorts and left Foggy with a view of his body that made his mouth water. It was a lot darker here than in the living room, but Matt’s abs were hard to ignore. Or the necklace with the golden cross he always wore. He was beautiful, and Foggy failed spectacularly at not staring at him like a creep.
Matt got under the covers, and Foggy followed the urge to tuck him in properly. He even brushed some hair away from Matt’s face and earned a mumbled “Thanks” for it that made Foggy smile.
He lingered for a moment, then Foggy pressed a gentle kiss to Matt’s forehead and got up to finally leave.
“Good night, Matt,” he whispered on his way out, trying to ignore his thundering heart.
Foggy had hoped now that Matt was back home and could sleep in his own bed again, he would be back to normal in no time. But over the next few days, he actually looked worse and Foggy worried, a lot. He even wondered if it had something to do with the night where he followed Matt into his apartment. But Matt didn’t seem uncomfortable around him or even different, so he brushed it off. Maybe it was just because the tour was still going, and Matt was slowly creeping toward his limit.
One last show and everyone could take a break, especially Matt. Foggy couldn’t even imagine how exhausting the tour had been for everyone involved and he once again wished he could’ve done more, but then again, he couldn’t neglect his studies. No matter how hard it was, Matt couldn’t be his top priority in life.
Finishing the summer tour in Hell’s Kitchen, on Matt’s home ground, had been a great idea, and Matt’s wish specifically. Foggy appreciated how Matt embraced his roots. And the venue was not only packed, it was sold out.
The concert went great and Foggy loved the energy from Matt and the crowd, bouncing off each other like two parts of a whole. The applause after two hours was deafening, and Foggy couldn’t stop smiling like he was the celebrated star of the show. He looked at Matt bowing down, happy and satisfied, waving at the people when leaving the stage.
“Alright, let them cheer for two minutes and then we’re doing the encore,” Karen said, but Matt’s attention was clearly elsewhere.
“Everything alright?” Foggy asked, sensing something was off.
“Yeah, I just… yeah. Let me go to the bathroom real quick.”
“Okay, but please hurry,” Karen said as Foggy watched Matt go.
Two minutes passed, then three, then five. But Matt didn’t return, and Karen looked increasingly more annoyed with every minute.
“What’s taking him so long?” she hissed, and Foggy shrugged.
“I’ll go check on him,” he decided and went to the bathroom.
He knocked on the door, but there was no answer.
“Matt, is everything okay in there?” he asked, trying not to sound too worried.
Silence.
Foggy tried to open the door, and to his surprise, it wasn’t even locked. The bathroom was empty.
“Matt?!” he asked uselessly, heart racing now. Fuck, where was he?
He left the bathroom, asking the next tech guy he saw if he had seen Matt, but he simply shook his head.
Foggy’s mind was racing along with his heart. Where could Matt go within five minutes? Before the encore? That made no sense.
He went back to Karen, hoping against hope that he had missed Matt somehow and that he was already on his way back to the stage. But he wasn’t, and Karen also looked worried now.
“Where is Matt?” she asked, and Foggy blanched. He had no idea. He had lost Matt at his final concert of the tour. He was his bodyguard, how could he let that happen? Someone may have kidnapped Matt, and it was entirely his fault. Foggy tried not to panic and instead be rational.
“I don’t know, but he can’t be far yet. I’m afraid there won’t be an encore tonight, but I swear I’m gonna find him. If he contacts you, please let me know,” Foggy said and then left without another word.
Outside, the city was buzzing in the summer night, like nothing was out of the ordinary and Foggy was not freaking out. Matt on his own wouldn’t be able to go far in such a short amount of time. He could’ve taken a cab though. But did he even have his wallet with him? Or his phone?
He called Matt anyway but was directed to voicemail. He didn’t bother leaving a message.
Then he called Luke because Foggy needed backup, and he figured Luke was his best option, reliable and trustworthy as he was, even on his day off. He already picked up the call after the second ring.
“What’s up, Foggy?”
Foggy took a deep breath, getting his thoughts in order before answering, “Hey Luke, I know you’re not on shift, but Matt left his concert right before the encore to go to the bathroom and didn’t come back. He doesn’t pick up his phone, and I have no idea where he is. I’m looking for him and I hope he contacts Karen, but I’m not sure if he will.”
Luke didn’t say anything for a long moment, then asked, “Do you think someone kidnapped him?”
“God, I hope not. In an ideal scenario he simply felt too unwell to do the encore and then took a cab home to rest. Would it still be a dick move to let nobody know? Yes, but at least he would be safe.”
“Do you want me to go to his place and check if he’s there?”
“No need,” Foggy shook his head. “I’m already on my way to his apartment. Your girlfriend is a nurse at Metro General, right? Is she on shift tonight?”
“Yeah,” Luke said.
“Okay, good. If Matt shows up there, please ask her to let you know. And then let me know, so I can freak out for an entirely different reason,” he laughed hollowly.
“I will. Thanks for letting me know. We’re gonna find him, I’m sure of it.”
“We better. Talk to you soon,” Foggy said and hung up.
He went to Matt’s apartment as quickly as possible, but Matt didn’t answer the door. Foggy strained his ears, but it didn’t sound like someone was home at all. It was too quiet. From the street he had seen that the lights were off, but that wasn’t necessarily an indicator whether or not Matt was at home.
Foggy searched a few places Matt regularly went to – Josie’s, his church, that little diner that served the best coffee in all of Hell’s Kitchen according to Matt. But he was nowhere to be found.
He stepped out of the diner with no further clues but an iced coffee in his hand. Foggy had the feeling it was gonna be a long night and he wouldn’t make it through without extra caffeine. And he had to admit, it was really good coffee.
Suddenly, Foggy’s phone rang. Unknown caller. That couldn’t be a good sign. But maybe it was Luke’s girlfriend who had news for him?
“Hello?” he said when he picked up.
“Hey Foggy, it’s me.”
Foggy blinked a few times. What. The. Fuck.
“Matt, where the hell are you? Are you alright? What’s this number?” he asked.
“I’m fine. This is my backup phone because I left mine at the venue.”
The problem was, Matt didn’t sound fine. He was breathing heavily like he had just done a sprint. And all the sounds from the city could be heard in the background. He was definitely outside somewhere.
“Where are you?” Foggy asked again.
“You don’t have to worry about me. I’m on my way home now. I’m also gonna call Karen to apologize for leaving early,” Matt deflected.
“You’re impossible.” Foggy shook his head, looking around at the people minding their own business. He should do that, too. But he couldn’t. This was about Matt. He wouldn’t just let him off the hook simply because he called. “Don’t make me ask again.”
“Then don’t,” Matt said, and Foggy wanted to punch him.
“I wanna correct myself: You’re an asshole. Do you have any idea how worried I was? Still am, because I still don’t know what the fuck’s going on?”
“Foggy, listen–”
The rest of Matt’s words were drowned out by the sound of an ambulance. Foggy heard it and then suddenly saw it driving past him. His eyes widened, then he looked around frantically. Matt was that close?! But he couldn’t see him.
And then Foggy looked up.
On one of the rooftops, half hidden behind a water tank, he spotted Daredevil, with a phone in his hand.
“Matt?” he asked, heart hammering in his chest.
“Yes?” he replied and Foggy could see Daredevil talk at the same time. Foggy’s eyes widened even further, and he stared at Daredevil in disbelief.
“This is not a conversation we should have on the phone,” Foggy said, not exactly sure if he said it to Matt or himself. He ended the call, threw his coffee away, and started running.
Daredevil hadn’t even bothered to run away, when Foggy finally reached the rooftop where he had seen him standing. Foggy was trying to catch his breath after his sprint, and he was suddenly aware that if he had attempted a run like this before starting his bodyguard job, he probably wouldn’t have made it this far or would be wheezing for the next half hour.
Now he was standing right in front of Daredevil who stared at him in silence. No, he wasn’t staring. The mask looked like it had holes for the eyes, but from up close Foggy could see they were merely placeholders because Daredevil didn’t need them. Because Daredevil was blind.
Foggy swallowed, took a deep breath, then asked, “Do you have anything to say in your defense, Matt?”
“No, counselor.”
Foggy couldn’t help but laugh. It sounded borderline hysterical, he was sure of it. But what else was he supposed to do? This whole situation made no sense, but it was clearly real, even when it didn’t feel like it.
“You’re Daredevil,” Foggy said, no question, just the fact with all the evidence laid out in front of him.
“I am,” Matt confirmed.
“But… why? How?!”
Matt hesitated, and Foggy watched him lick his lips in thought.
“I know you have questions, Foggy, and I’m gonna answer all of them, I promise. Just… can we not do it here? Please? I don’t want people to see us up here.”
Foggy sighed. Matt was right, unfortunately. He wanted his questions answered, but this wasn’t the right place. And he didn’t think Matt would just up and leave the city to avoid a difficult conversation with him. Probably.
There was no real neutral ground for them, so Foggy nodded and said, “I’ll meet you at your place. I gotta make a few phone calls anyway.”
“You’re not gonna tell Karen about this, are you?” Matt asked, and Foggy laughed again.
“I don’t think she would believe me, to be honest. But I need to let everyone know you weren’t kidnapped on your way to the bathroom.”
Matt flinched a little at that, then nodded. And without another word he jumped off the rooftop and disappeared into the night. Foggy stayed on the rooftop for a bit, his heart and thoughts racing. He had to think of what he wanted to say to Matt when he was at his apartment, for the second time tonight. But Foggy had no idea what yet.
He had so many thoughts and feelings about this whole situation, he didn’t know how to get them in order. He was angry with Matt for lying to him for so long, but also impressed with what he could apparently do as Daredevil, and he was so, so worried about him getting hurt. And a shameful part of Foggy was turned on. He knew Matt was strong and a fighter, and the thought of what he could do with that strength made him shudder.
Foggy had considered taking a cab to Matt’s place, but he figured a walk to clear his head would probably be the better option. He called Karen first when he was back on the streets, telling her half-lies about having found Matt and staying with him, because he was sick, but at least safe and sound at home.
Then he called Luke, pretty much telling him the same thing as Karen, but the way he asked Foggy if he was okay made him wonder if Luke actually bought the lie. And he couldn’t help but wonder if Luke could somehow tell that Foggy wasn’t okay, because he had some kind of superpower, too. Because that was what it was that Matt possessed, right? How else was he able to be Daredevil?
Foggy was none the wiser when he finally arrived back at Matt’s place. He didn’t even have to knock, the door stood ajar. At least Matt was actually willing to talk about this mess, Foggy thought, entering the dark apartment.
“You can turn on the light,” Matt said from somewhere inside, and Foggy switched on the light, almost surprised that it worked.
He found Matt sitting on the couch, wearing pajama pants, but no shirt. And Foggy tried not to stare but couldn’t stop himself from doing it either. He had seen Matt shirtless the other night, but it had been dark and he hadn’t noticed the amount of scars scattered around Matt’s chest. He could tell some of them were old, but some were clearly fresh, the remainder of stitches still visible.
“Who stitches you up when you get hurt?” Foggy asked because it was the first thought that crossed his mind looking at Matt.
“Claire,” Matt answered.
“Claire? As in Luke’s girlfriend Claire?”
“Yep, that’s the one.”
“So she knows. And Luke probably knows, too, doesn’t he?” Foggy asked.
“Yeah, they both know.”
“Okay, okay, cool,” Foggy said. “Who else knows? Karen? Kirsten? Everyone who works for you, except for me?” Foggy couldn’t suppress his anger anymore, and Matt winced.
“No, Foggy. Only them. Claire once found me badly hurt in a dumpster, and she and Luke patched me up. I hired him shortly after, figured he would understand, but also be able to help me if necessary. Trust me, me being Daredevil isn’t an open secret among the team.”
“I think we have to talk about trust and how you shouldn’t ask that of me right now,” Foggy said, the bitterness so evident in his voice he knew it was impossible for Matt not to notice.
“That’s… fair. But maybe we can get back to that. Ask all your questions and I will answer truthfully. But just so we’re clear: No matter what you say or what arguments you have, I won’t stop being Daredevil. The city needs me in that mask.”
Foggy wished he could say he was surprised, but he really wasn’t. Matt was stubborn to a fault. If he wanted to do something, he would not let anyone get in his way of doing it. Not even the people closest to him. Foggy had the feeling he would have to make a decision about Matt very soon, and he was already certain what he would choose in that case. He was so screwed.
“Can I sit down?” Foggy asked, and Matt nodded.
Foggy sat down, and the room was silent for a long moment. He knew that Matt wouldn’t explain anything unprompted to not overwhelm Foggy or scare him away.
“How do you do it?” Foggy asked finally. “Being a vigilante, I mean. I saw you jumping from a rooftop with a confidence I won’t have in a century, and I can actually see where I’m heading.”
Matt smiled a little, then said, “I lost my sight, but all my other senses got enhanced from the chemicals. And they form a picture in my mind I can use to navigate the city. Sound is especially important for me, and the least weird one, I think. People have heard of ‘absolute hearing’ when it comes to music, so I could probably get away with that, as long as nobody asks about the other stuff. And as long as I don’t tell someone I can hear heartbeats.”
“I’m sorry, but did you just say you can hear heartbeats?”
“Yes,” Matt said.
“What does that tell you?”
He shrugged. “I can tell if someone lies to me or if they’re nervous, whatever. It’s very helpful when trying to figure people out.”
Foggy blinked. “Is that the reason you’re present during the job interviews? You can tell if someone is bullshitting you?”
Matt smirked a little. “Yeah, that’s exactly why. It’s very easy to tell if someone wants to work for me to get a piece of the cake or if they’re generally interested in helping me.”
“Is that why you hired me with no experience?” Foggy asked, and Matt’s smirk turned into a soft smile.
“I really liked your voice, Foggy. And you were so honest, it was almost painful. You didn’t try to deny your lack of experience, but you made sure I would be safe around you no matter what. And you’re smart. I have no doubts that you’re going to be a fantastic lawyer. Sometimes honesty and intention are worth much more than skill. And I knew you would not only be willing to learn, but also learn quickly.”
Foggy felt heat creep up his face at Matt’s words, not used to being complimented so freely and openly.
“Thank you,” he said.
“I can be honest, too,” Matt insisted.
“I don’t doubt that,” Foggy said. “So when did this Daredevil thing start? And why? I don’t think you woke up one day and wanted to punch bad people.”
“A few years ago. At first I only tried giving the police the information that I had from simply listening to the city outside. But the issue was that I had no evidence and they didn’t believe me. I could hear them lie to me when they said they would look into whatever crime I was reporting.”
“Assholes,” Foggy mumbled.
“Some of them, yeah. When I realized the system was failing me, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I’m helping where I can. I scare people and yes, I do get in fights quite often. But I don’t have a gun, and I would never kill someone.”
“Do you sleep better at night since you’re doing this?” Foggy asked.
“I do, yeah. It’s this small part I can do to help to protect my community and make the city a little safer. I’m not a lawyer, and I don’t know what else to do.” He paused for a moment. “I, well, Daredevil has a friend at the police who usually takes over the cases after I intervened. He doesn’t know the man behind the mask, but he thinks Daredevil is not a threat.”
Silence fell over the room again, but it wasn’t a comfortable silence.
“Can I get myself a glass of water?” Foggy asked and already stood up.
“Of course. The glasses are in the upper left cupboard.”
Foggy filled himself a glass and gulped it down. He hadn’t realized how thirsty he was until now. He refilled the glass and drank most of it, then fiddled with it, sloshing the water around in the glass.
“Why did you leave earlier?” Foggy asked eventually. “What did you hear that was more important than your own concert?”
“There was a guy cornering another man... It wasn’t a mugging, the victim had already offered his money and credit card, but that wasn’t what the other one was after. He told him what he wanted and that ‘no’ wasn’t an option.” Matt turned his head to Foggy then. “I couldn’t just finish my concert and pretend nothing happened, Foggy! If you could hear what I hear, you’d understand,” he pleaded.
“I think you did the right thing, Matt,” Foggy said, and he could tell Matt was listening very closely to his heartbeat to figure out if he was telling the truth or not. But Foggy meant what he said, and he was sure Matt could tell as well.
“Thank you,” he breathed.
Foggy cleared his throat and licked his lips, then said, “Just so we’re clear. I think what you’re doing is a terrible idea and I hate seeing you hurting. But if that’s what you need to do, then who am I to judge? Just… do me a favor and don’t get caught before I’m a lawyer and can defend you, okay?”
Matt laughed at that, an honest, loud laugh that made Foggy’s heart speed up.
“I’ll try my best,” Matt promised and then stood up to walk to the kitchen counter Foggy was still standing at.
“And speaking of terrible ideas…,” Matt said and took the glass from Foggy’s hand. He held on to Foggy’s hand after, and Foggy hoped he knew what was coming.
Matt’s other hand curled around his neck, and Foggy was drawn into a kiss that was hot and demanding and perfect. Foggy didn’t hesitate to melt into the kiss and opened his mouth willingly to let Matt’s tongue explore. Matt’s hand moved from his neck to his collarbone, then back up to cup his face, making the kiss even more sensual.
Foggy held on to the counter for balance. He felt hot all over, and the thought of Matt taking him right here on the counter crossed his mind and sent all of his blood downward. Yet Foggy was the one who drew away, gasping for air. Matt would be his doom, and he would happily accept that.
When Matt licked his lips Foggy wasn’t sure if he was savoring the taste of the kiss or if he was teasing him. Maybe it was both.
“Sorry for knowing you’d be into that,” Matt said with a grin, and then Foggy was sure it was both.
He laughed breathlessly. “That’s okay. Like, really okay.”
And he wondered briefly if Matt could also tell that Foggy would have never initiated a kiss between them. It had had to be Matt considering their circumstances. But Foggy didn’t want to think about this right now.
“Good,” Matt whispered very close to his ear and made Foggy shiver again. “Let me take you to bed then.”
“Yes, please,” Foggy said and let Matt guide him to his bedroom.
They undressed each other impatiently, and it was only when they were both naked in Matt’s bed and Matt was sitting in Foggy’s lap with nothing in between them that Foggy was suddenly too aware of his own body. He felt heavy and wondered if he was smothering Matt, trapping his dick with his belly.
Foggy could tell the exact moment Matt noticed something was off because one moment he was busy kissing his throat and sucking a bruise to his collarbone, the next he drew back and tilted his head while his eyes were directed at Foggy’s face.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“I… Matt, are you sure you want… this? With me, I mean?” Foggy said, and Matt’s eyes widened in surprise.
“What exactly about our current position makes you question that I want you?” Matt asked back.
“It’s just… Your body is all muscle and supermodel-like and mine is… well, isn’t. It’s just a lot. And you could have anyone, so why would you want me of all people?” Foggy confessed and bit his lips. He wondered if he only felt stupid for saying that or if it actually was. What if he just made Matt realize that this was a bad idea?
“Hey, hey,” Matt said and cupped his face with both of his hands. “Sssh, Foggy, none of that. I think you’re beautiful. I want both your body and soul. I don’t think your body is a lot, I think it’s warm and sturdy. And you have gained muscles from your boxing training, don’t think I haven’t noticed that either. You’re perfect as you are.” There was finality in his voice at the last part and then Matt kissed him again, deeply, all-consuming.
“Let me show you how beautiful your body is to me,” Matt said, and Foggy nodded, a little dazed after Matt’s words and the kiss. He looked at Matt’s soft smile, then was pushed down until he was lying on his back and Matt started peppering kisses all over his face.
Apparently, Matt made it his mission to map out every inch of Foggy’s body with his lips and his tongue while letting his hands roam as well. Matt seemed to be touching Foggy everywhere at once, and it was overwhelming, having Matt’s sole attention on him like this.
Foggy moaned when Matt sucked his nipple into his mouth, tweaking the other with his fingers. He could see on Matt’s face that he took a mental note that Foggy was sensitive there and really liked that.
He continued downward, taking his sweet time with Foggy’s belly as if to prove a point that, yes, he was into that part of Foggy’s body, too. It made Foggy feel even more exposed, raw and vulnerable, but so good at the same time. Matt dipped his tongue into his navel and then blew on it, making Foggy shiver.
Matt kissed Foggy’s inner thighs, his head dangerously close to his dick, and it took Foggy a lot to not move and make contact happen. Foggy watched Matt lick his lips, his eyes directed at Foggy’s face.
“I wanna blow you before I fuck you,” Matt said. “Will you let me?”
Foggy almost laughed, but the sound he made was more an aborted moan at Matt’s plan.
“Yes, yes to both,” Foggy said and pawed at Matt’s shoulders until he got the hint and moved up to kiss Foggy again, smiling into his mouth.
“You’re gonna love this,” Matt said, and it sounded a lot like a promise.
Then he moved down Foggy’s body again. Foggy opened his thighs wider, giving Matt space, and he hummed in appreciation. Matt licked a stripe from Foggy’s base to the tip, clearly figuring out the length, and Foggy wanted more. So much more.
He wondered for a moment if Matt could read his mind when he took his dick in his mouth, pretty far, too, and started sucking. He could hear Matt taking a deep breath through his nose, probably taking his smell and the sensation in, not only to get air. Matt made obscene noises when he sucked Foggy’s cock, letting it slide out of his mouth with a wet sound and when he directed his gaze in Foggy’s direction again, Foggy saw how glazed over Matt’s pretty eyes were.
Foggy reached down and brushed some hair from Matt’s sweaty forehead, then let his hand rest there when Matt took him in again. Foggy closed his eyes, but he could feel Matt moving his head up and down now that he had his hand in his hair. Then he heard a choking sound from Matt and he stopped for a moment, trying to catch his breath, only for him to go deep again. Foggy could feel his tip in Matt’s throat and Matt’s lips on his pelvis, and he bucked his hips involuntarily, making Matt cough.
“Sorry,” he murmured and scratched at Matt’s scalp soothingly.
Matt didn’t seem too bothered by it, he only grabbed Foggy’s hips to ground him. With the strength Matt possessed, it was a good way to still Foggy. This way, Matt could set the pace again, and Foggy was more than willing to let him do whatever he wanted with his mouth. Foggy moaned and writhed and he could feel his orgasm approaching quickly the way Matt treated him.
“Matt,” he warned, pulling lightly at Matt’s hair, and he went willingly, exposing Foggy’s cock to the air again.
They both took a moment to get their bearings, breathing deeply, and then Matt licked Foggy’s tip that was leaking precum. Foggy opened his eyes and looked at Matt who was grinning like he was proud he got Foggy so breathless.
“Can you… smell my arousal?” Foggy asked the first thing that came to his mind, and Matt nodded.
“Yeah, and it’s intoxicating. I could get lost in it, but I promised to fuck you, and I’m gonna.”
Foggy let out a breathy laugh, wondering if Matt was gonna be the death of him and deciding it wouldn’t be worst thing that ever happened to him.
Matt kissed him again, pushing his tongue into Foggy’s mouth, making them both sigh into the kiss. Foggy could hear how Matt reached over to his nightstand and retrieved a bottle of lube and a condom from the drawer, never letting go of Foggy in the process.
He only drew away when he opened the bottle and spread the lube on his fingers. Foggy watched him and couldn’t wait until Matt finally filled him up with something. And suddenly Matt pushed two fingers inside of him and all thoughts left Foggy for a moment, leaving him moaning and even more turned on.
He could tell how Matt focused on the sounds he made and his movements, how he waited before moving his fingers until Foggy tried to push them deeper with his whole body. Matt chuckled, but complied. He set a slow, but steady rhythm, preparing Foggy, then added another finger, the pace barely faltering.
Foggy was hot all over and felt sweat dripping down his hair. He knew Matt had either heard or smelled it as well, because he kissed Foggy’s temple, his tongue peeking out to taste the sweat on Foggy’s skin. It made Foggy shiver once again and he wanted to say something, but then Matt’s fingers hit exactly the right spot inside him and all Foggy could do was moan while his body jerked up for a moment.
“Matt,” he whined. “Please.”
Matt kissed him on the forehead and withdrew his fingers, making Foggy whimper and clench on nothing. Foggy could hear how the condom package was opened and then the bottle of lube again.
“C’mon,” Matt said, manhandling Foggy until he was on his hands and knees.
Foggy felt Matt’s breath ghost over his back, wondering if he could feel the flush and the heat radiating off of him that Foggy felt. And if he liked it. But the way Matt kissed him and touched him, he had to like it.
But then his hands landed on Foggy’s hips to hold him in place. And the next moment Matt’s tip was on Foggy’s entrance and in one swift motion his whole dick was inside of Foggy and that was all Foggy was interested in for the time being. Matt stilled after bottoming out, breathing deeply, and Foggy did the same. The sensation was incredible. Matt was deep, so deep.
And just when Foggy thought he needed to beg, Matt finally started to move. It was agonizingly slow, like Matt was trying to map out Foggy’s inside as well, getting used to the feeling. It wasn’t enough for Foggy, so he pushed back toward Matt and made him grunt in surprise. Matt was having none of that though, tightening the grip on Foggy’s hips, stilling him.
“Patience,” he murmured, and Foggy made a sound that hopefully conveyed his displeasure about waiting. But Matt was the one in control here.
After a few more slow, but deep thrusts, Matt finally picked up the pace, seemingly satisfied with how patient Foggy had been and how well he had been taking him. Foggy moaned and when Matt loosened his grip on his hips a little, he moved against Matt, trying to push him deeper, matching him.
Foggy almost lost himself in the rhythm, but then Matt pulled out almost entirely and pushed back inside, seemingly deeper than before, and Foggy’s brain was back online for a moment. But only enough to be aware of Matt finding his prostate again, then he dissolved into moans and grunts again while Matt hit that spot repeatedly.
“Matt,” he said, unsure what he actually wanted, but trusting that Matt understood him anyway.
And he did.
One of Matt’s hands reached around his body and grabbed his dick, stroking it in the same rhythm he thrust into Foggy. Foggy wanted to hold out a little longer, but everything was hot and Matt’s hand was rough and slippery and too good. He rubbed his thumb over Foggy’s tip and curled his body over Foggy’s back, impossibly closer. Then he kissed Foggy’s neck, like he knew exactly what would push Foggy over the edge. Foggy came with a loud moan, his body almost collapsing onto the mattress, but being kept up by Matt’s strong grip.
Matt came with a grunt after a few more deep thrusts, filling the condom, spreading the warmth and heat inside of him. Foggy could hear him pant above him, also trying to catch his breath. Foggy’s arms trembled, but he didn’t want to just drop down, for both of their sakes.
“Matt,” he said and wiggled his ass a little, drawing another grunt from Matt, but he got his message across.
Matt slipped out of him, and then Foggy let his arms drop, faceplanting into the pillow. He could hear Matt laugh next to him a moment later.
“Your fault,” Foggy said, voice muffled through the pillow, making Matt laugh even harder.
Matt leaned over and kissed his temple again, running a hand through his hair. Every part of Foggy felt sweaty, but he didn’t care right now. He turned his head in Matt’s direction and smiled at the look on Matt’s face – peaceful and satisfied. Foggy felt exactly the same.
A comfortable silence settled over them for a bit, and Foggy’s eyes drooped. That was when Matt got up, but Foggy could only make a displeased sound, not stop him. Matt chuckled at that, but left the bedroom anyway. Thankfully, he returned quickly, and when Matt started cleaning up Foggy’s body with a cool washcloth, Foggy couldn’t even be mad at him. Quite the opposite. The water was bliss on his overheated skin, and he sighed, feeling even better now that he was somewhat clean.
“Thanks,” he mumbled and grabbed at Matt to pull him down on the bed again.
Matt went willingly, and Foggy was very pleased when he cuddled close, wrapping an arm around Foggy’s middle. His head settled under Foggy’s chin, and his hair tickled a little. Foggy curled an arm around his shoulders and pressed a kiss to Matt’s hair. It was perfect.
When Foggy woke up, he realized it was really bright in the room. And warm. And he wasn’t alone in the bed. The memories of last night flooded back, and he tried to sort all of this out. The end of the tour. Matt disappearing. Matt being Daredevil. Matt fucking him. A lot had happened last night, not all of it good.
He watched Matt sleep for a while with no intention of waking him up. He needed rest and nobody deserved it more than him. Matt was unfairly beautiful in the morning. Foggy bet his own hair looked like a mop and smelled of last night and that he also had terrible morning breath. He could make sure to be more presentable by the time Matt woke up, but Foggy hadn’t forgotten about all the things Matt had said about him. He doubted Matt would run away because of morning breath.
It was a delight watching Matt waking up, Foggy decided. There was something adorable in the way he opened his eyes, blinked a few times and then tilted his head curiously, checking his surroundings with his senses. Foggy was almost surprised he couldn’t twitch his ears.
“Foggy,” he whispered reverently.
“Yes. Good morning, sunshine.”
“Good morning,” Matt said and kissed Foggy sweetly.
Foggy was glad, because it made last night seem a lot more than a fling. You didn’t kiss your one-night stand in the morning. You either left or made sure the other party left. And that was it. Foggy wasn’t even thinking about leaving, not until Matt told him very clearly he wanted him gone.
They kissed for a while, unhurried and soft, with no intention of going further right now. At some point Matt suggested a shower and breakfast, and Foggy only agreed when Matt wiggled his brows and said Foggy could join him in the shower. Foggy made them omelets afterward, and Matt approved of his omelet-skills by eating two.
“I quit,” Foggy suddenly said while Matt was putting the dishes in the sink.
Foggy could see him freeze at the words.
“What?”
“I quit,” Foggy repeated. “My bodyguard job. I can’t be… us when you’re my boss.”
“Why not?” Matt asked.
Foggy sighed, “Because it’s unprofessional? And shouldn’t we be equal parts in a relationship?”
“We can still be that while you’re my bodyguard. Besides, you now have even more reason to protect me with feelings involved.”
“I’d also rather not end up like Whitney Houston’s bodyguard,” Foggy said.
“Not even if I promise you to sing ‘I will always love you’?”
“Hm, tempting. But seriously Matt, why would you still want me as your bodyguard?”
There was a pause, and Foggy could tell Matt was considering his answer, brow furrowed.
Then he took Foggy’s hand and said, “I would like to have you around as much as I can. It was always gonna be temporary anyway. Soon you’ll be a lawyer and won’t need this side job anymore. And you’ll probably have even less time for me. So yeah, I wanna make the most of this, as selfish as it sounds.”
Foggy swallowed. “And you don’t think it would be an issue if the team figures it out?”
Matt shrugged and said, “If anyone has a problem with us, they’re free to go. And I don’t care what they think. We’re both adults and can do whatever we want.”
Foggy loved how fierce and determined Matt sounded. And he wanted, God, he wanted to keep Matt so bad and be by his side.
“Okay,” he said dumbly.
“Okay? As in you continue your occupation with me for the time being?”
“Yeah, that,” Foggy laughed and kissed Matt again, knowing he would be staying with Matt as long as he could, as long as Matt wanted him.
He hoped it would be for life.
