Work Text:

Kwangmin had thought he would be spying on his brother’s date when he’d snuck out to the swingset he found Youngmin sitting on.

After waiting for a while in his hiding spot and not seeing anyone else reveal themselves, he only grows more confused. It was New Year’s Eve. Youngmin had told him he was going out to meet someone he’d been seeing off and on.

Granted, Kwangmin had his own opinions about the person his brother was interested in, but that was really none of his business. Where the hell that guy was and why was Youngmin alone, that was his business.

He approaches cautiously, peering around to look at Youngmin’s face, announcing his presence with a soft clearing of his throat. “‘Mister handsome’ that you wouldn’t stop going on and on about didn’t show?” he questions.

Youngmin doesn’t even look all that surprised that Kwangmin had come out to spy on him. He would have done the same. He snuffs the sparkler that was in his hand out by shoving it into a pile of sand at his feet, shaking his head. “Guess not.”

Kwangmin feels a pang of hurt for his brother then, but a little of something else, too. Worldlessly, he places himself on the swing next to Youngmin. “His loss.” Kwangmin finally grumbles, trying to smile over at Youngmin, who still looked lost in his own thoughts.

“You know, Kwanggie. It’s bad luck.” Youngmin pouts, sagging into the chain of the swing in melodramatic defeat. He sighs as if this ordeal is more important than it actually was. To him, it mattered. “Starting the year without a good luck kiss with someone feels like a bad omen, after all.” He laughs but the expression doesn’t reach his eyes.

Kwangmin doesn’t really know what possesses him then as he rises from the swing next to Youngmin. Taking the chains above his head in both hands, he tuts softly. “Hey. Look at me.”

Once the younger has given him his full attention, Kwangmin continues, smiling at him in a way designed to cheer up his brother if nothing else. “You make your own luck for the year.” He holds Youngmin’s gaze for just a bit longer, swallowing thickly as something overcomes him in a way that’s hard to ignore.

“Close your eyes.” Kwangmin murmurs the command.

Softly, Youngmin does. Kwangmin swears he’s probably holding his breath, but he can’t focus on that right now. All he can feel is his own heart hammering against his chest as he leans down slowly.

Kwangmin closes the gap, tenderly brushing his lips over Youngmin’s in the briefest and sweetest of kisses.

Youngmin’s eyes flutter open as he wordlessly blushes, lips softly parting in stunned silence once Kwangmin pulls away.

“Happy New Year, Youngmin-ah.” Kwangmin smiles.
