The Royal Adjutant’s Secret

Summary:

The snow had begun to fall from the heavy, slate-grey sky, descending in silent flakes that seemed to swallow the noise of the capital. Contrasting this tranquil descent was the relentless, frantic bustle of Grand Trad. Swiftly weaving through this chaotic tapestry was a young man whose hair, a stark and brilliant white, matched the falling snow perfectly. His gaze—piercing blue and full of a quiet, regal curiosity—swept over the cobblestone alleyways of his kingdom.

He promised to meet with Alonzo, who was standing next to the window of the Honeybee Inn. Will spotted a tall, elegant silhouette that seemed immune to the frantic pace of the city. Even in a sea of people, Alonzo was incomparable. His light blue hair was gathered in a messy, deliberate hair tie beneath his trademark bowler hat, a few stray locks dusted with white. He leaned against the damp brickwork with a slouch that spoke of total confidence, the very picture of nonchalant grace amidst the storm.

The snow had begun to fall from the heavy, slate-grey sky, descending in silent flakes that seemed to swallow the noise of the capital. Contrasting this tranquil descent was the relentless, frantic bustle of Grand Trad. Beneath the looming shadow of the Royal Statues, which stood like silent sentinels of a new era, people of every tribe—Paripus, Clemar, Eugief, and more—scrambled to prepare for the bite of winter. They hauled bundles of dry firewood that smelled of sap and bartered with high-pitched intensity for the last of the season's salted meats and hardy root vegetables.

Swiftly weaving through this chaotic tapestry was a young man whose hair, a stark and brilliant white, matched the falling snow perfectly. His gaze—piercing blue and full of a quiet, regal curiosity—swept over the cobblestone alleyways of his kingdom. Clad in a heavy, dark traveling cloak that smelled faintly of cedar and old stone, the disguised king moved with a practiced lightness that drew no prying eyes. To the common folk, he was merely another traveler seeking refuge from the wind; to himself, he was finally free of the oppressive stone walls that had become his gilded cage, a place where every sigh was recorded and every footstep echoed with the weight of a nation.

Will’s escapes were becoming legendary among the inner circle of the castle staff, and dangerously well-known to the public eye. He pulled his hood lower, the rough fabric shielding his face from both the biting cold and the mounting risk of recognition. He knew Hulkenberg and Strohl would be frantic by now, their armored boots likely clicking sharply against the marble floors as they scoured the royal gardens or interrogated the stable hands. Yet, he couldn't bring himself to feel the usual pang of guilt; not today. Today, the world felt too small for a throne, and he had a promise to keep at the Honeybee Inn.

Meeting within the castle felt like performing a stiff, rehearsed play—too many guards standing like statues, too much suffocating etiquette, and far too many prying ears behind every tapestry. They both preferred the casual meetings, the steam of the vents, and the mouth-watering smell of redgrass-roasted bidou that permeated the streets.

Standing next to the window of the Honeybee Inn, Will spotted a tall, elegant silhouette that seemed immune to the frantic pace of the city.

"Your Majesty," Alonzo’s voice arrived like a warm hearth—smooth, melodic, and laced with that ever-present hint of mischief that always made Will feel like they were sharing a secret the rest of the world wasn't allowed to know. "I am honored you could make it without being tackled by your knightly shadow. I hear her spear-work is getting quite formidable these days."

Will couldn't help the genuine smile that tugged at his lips, the tension in his shoulders finally beginning to melt. "I’ve told you a dozen times, Alonzo. Just 'Will' when we’re out here."

"My apologies. I was merely being a tease," Alonzo laughed softly, the sound vibrating in the crisp air. "I’m grateful you decided to indulge my selfish request. I know the crown sits heavy these days, and the council is a jealous mistress of your time."

As the Royal Adjutant to the Citizens' Council, Alonzo was often as buried in parchment and political maneuvering as Will was in royal decrees and diplomatic summits. It made these fleeting moments in the crowded city streets feel like stolen treasure.

"It’s been too long," Will said, his voice softening as he stepped into the nidia's personal space, seeking a reprieve from the wind. "I hope the council hasn't been giving you too much trouble. I know how stubborn the representatives can be when their personal interests are at stake."

"Oh, the usual political posturing, veiled threats, and petty squabbles over trade routes," Alonzo replied, his eyes bright and calculating. "But I wouldn't trade the chaos for anything. It keeps the mind sharp, and the heart... entertained. Stability is a fine goal, Will, but unpredictability is where the real fun lies."

They stood silently for a short moment, the silence between them comfortable yet charged with an energy that seemed to push back the cold. Will was acutely aware of the steady, rhythmic thrum of his own heart. He wasn't oblivious to the gravity of his feelings; he knew the way his pulse quickened when Alonzo leaned in just a fraction too close, or the way he found himself lingering on the nidia's every word, searching for hidden meanings in his effortless banter. But Alonzo was a cipher—a man of a thousand masks, a master of information who kept his own soul under lock and key. His unpredictability was his greatest charm, and Will’s most daunting hurdle.

"I must say, I’ve enjoyed this brief respite from the world's demands," Alonzo said, breaking the spell as he straightened his posture. "It’s a pity duty calls us to separate paths so soon. Life in the capital is never quite as interesting without our little chats."

"Where are you heading?" Will asked, unable to fully suppress the note of disappointment that colored his tone. The thought of the castle feeling even emptier in Alonzo's absence sat heavy in his gut.

"Port Brilehaven. There are whispers of certain... irregularities in the shipping manifests and some suspicious financial activity that require a delicate, perhaps slightly unscrupulous touch. I’m afraid I’ll be away for some time. You’ll have to keep your mischievous escapades to a minimum while I'm gone; I'd hate to come back and find you've been grounded by a knight in shining armor."

Will nodded solemnly, his heart sinking. He knew the nature of Alonzo's work better than most. Behind the fragile peace of the new era lay dark corners and neglected shadows that needed sweeping, and Alonzo was the finest, most discreet cleaner the kingdom had. His work was dangerous, essential, and often lonely.

"And before I depart for the coast," Alonzo added, a predatory, playful smirk playing on his lips, "I’ve heard the most fascinating rumors circulating through the castle scullery. It seems that the staff are quite observant."

Will raised an eyebrow, a flicker of heat rising to his cheeks. "You really do have ears everywhere, don't you? Is there no corner of this kingdom that escapes your notice?"

"Information is the only currency that never devalues, Will. It’s the lifeblood of power.” He smiled then continued, “The maids say the king has been seen staring longingly out of his office window for hours on end, smiling at nothing at all while his tea goes cold. They’ve whispered that our sovereign has finally found a secret lover, a mystery that left the entire court in a tizzy. I found myself quite curious if the rumors held any water, or if it was just idle gossip born of boredom."

He stepped closer, his presence suddenly overwhelming. His confidence was palpable, and the scent of him—cloves, old parchment, and the sharp tang of the winter air—filled Will’s senses, making his head spin. "You needn't confirm it, of course. I’m a patient man; I’ll find out the truth eventually. I always do." The nidia smiled.

"And if I told you the rumors were true?" Will countered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "If I said there was someone who occupied my thoughts more than any map or treaty?"

"Then I would be deeply, genuinely envious of whoever managed to catch your fancy," Alonzo replied smoothly, though his eyes narrowed slightly, searching Will's face. "They must be quite remarkable to distract a king from the fate of a nation. A true paragon of virtue, or perhaps a very talented rogue."

"Remarkable doesn't even begin to cover it," Will whispered, his voice barely audible over the distant calls of street vendors.

Alonzo’s expression shifted, a rare crack appearing in his composure for just a fraction of a second, before the polished mask of the professional adjutant slid back into place. "I see. Well then, I suppose I must take my leave, the tide waits for no man." He turned, his heavy cloak swirling around his boots and kicking up a light spray of snow. "I wish you luck on your romantic endeavor, Your Highness."

He began to walk away, his tall frame starting to blend into the grey, muted afternoon. The wind gusted suddenly, swirling a curtain of white snow between them, threatening to erase him from sight. Panic, sharp and visceral, flared in Will's chest. The thought of Alonzo leaving with things left unsaid—of months passing with only rumors to bridge the gap—was unbearable. Before he could talk himself out of it, Will lunged forward. His hand shot out, catching Alonzo’s gloved wrist in a firm, desperate grasp.

The world went perfectly still. Alonzo stopped in his tracks, his back still turned to Will. The King’s hand trembled with the force of his suppressed emotion. He was terrified of the power dynamic that governed their lives—fearing that a genuine plea might be mistaken for a royal command, an obligation rather than an invitation. He never wanted to force Alonzo's hand; he wanted to be chosen, not obeyed.

Realizing he had held on a second too long, and that the silence was becoming deafening, Will began to slowly pull away, his fingers dragging against the leather of Alonzo's glove. "I... sorry. I didn't mean to stop you so abruptly. I just—"

"Will," Alonzo interrupted, turning his head just enough to show a sharp glint in his eye that wasn't entirely professional. "Why don’t we flip a coin?"

The king blinked, caught off guard by the sudden shift in topic. "A coin toss? I suppose that’s fine, but why?"

Alonzo, now fully turned, pulled out a silver coin between his nimble fingers. "If it lands on heads, I tell you something I've been keeping to myself for a very long time. If it’s tails... we say our polite goodbyes, and I head for the port as planned."

Will swallowed hard, his throat dry despite the cold. This must be his own way of leaving the future to fate, or perhaps giving Will a graceful out if he wasn't ready for what came next. "Always a man of chance," Will managed to say, speaking with an amused, breathless tone that betrayed his nerves.

"A life without risk is a life not lived, wouldn't you agree? And you, of all people, should know the thrill of a high-stakes play. I already died once after all." The nidia chuckled.

Alonzo flicked his thumb with practiced ease. The silver coin spiraled into the cloudy sky, catching what little grey light remained and glinting like a fallen star. Will’s eyes followed the silver arc as the metal reached its apex, but as the coin began its descent, Alonzo moved with a speed that caught Will completely by surprise.

He didn't wait for the coin to land.

Alonzo bridged the gap in a single, decisive stride, his gloved hands framing Will’s face with surprising tenderness as he pulled the king into a kiss. It was sudden, bold, and tasted of winter air, and cloves. The world around them—the noise of the market, the falling snow, the distant ringing of bells—simply vanished. The only sound left in the universe was the sharp, metallic clink of the silver coin hitting the frozen cobblestones, now ignored and forgotten as it rolled into the white snow.

The chill that had settled in Will’s bones evaporated instantly, replaced by a heat that radiated from the center of his chest. When Alonzo finally pulled back, he didn't go far, keeping his hands anchored on Will's cheeks. His forehead rested against Will's, their breath mingling in rhythmic white clouds that blurred the space between them.

"That's quite a look in your eyes, Will," Alonzo whispered, his voice uncharacteristically husky and devoid of its usual teasing edge. "A mixture of shock and... something much more dangerous? I take it, the appointment in Brilehaven can wait another day?"

Will finally took a breath, nodding as his hands clenching the thick fabric of Alonzo’s coat as if to tether him to the spot. He didn’t know what to say, the man’s actions catching him completely off guard, leaving his heart racing.

Alonzo chuckled, a genuine, warm sound with a smile that reached his eyes. He hooked his arm under Will's, his touch firm and possessive, guiding him toward the warm, inviting glow of the Honeybee's entrance. "Then I suggest we continue this conversation inside, away from prying eyes. Over a very long and very private dinner."

"I couldn't agree more," Will said, his heart finally finding a steady, joyous rhythm.

As they stepped through the heavy wooden door, leaving the cold, grey world behind for the amber light of the tavern, the snow continued to fall in the alleyway. It eventually buried the silver coin—which had come to rest heads up—deep beneath a pristine, white shroud.

I actually wrote this a week after I finished the game (I'm so late I know.) I love Alonzo so much, so I wrote this cute story.
