Chapter Text

It has been nearly two weeks since Chen Yu and Gu Wei had their boys. They are falling into a routine and taking shifts to allow each other to sleep soundly. Gu Wei has been to the nearby market, not realizing how low they had been on food for themselves until he was going to prepare lunch. He has just parked his vehicle and he exists to grab the groceries from the backseat.

“A’Wei, perfect timing.” Nanny’s voice calls, she waves holding a large tote bag. “Call it, reinforcements.” She grins, Mei-Ling pulling a large casserole dish from the backseat. “We’ve barely seen hide or hair of you boys. I know what it’s like to care for newborn, but you have two. I know, A’Yu is returning to work soon?”

“Mn, tomorrow.” Gu Wei pouts, a grocery bag on each hip and a third dangling from his finger. He bumps the door closed with his hip and gives a sad grin. “I really appreciate the grub.” He leads the way, bowing his head graciously as the doorman rushes to open the door for him. “Thank you, you’re a lifesaver.” He juggles the grocery bags, trying to hit the elevator button.

“A’Wei, we’re here to give you boys some time together, before life gets to busy with work and the baobeis.’” Nanny says, pushing the button and taking the bag dangling even more precariously from his fingers. “You two can go out to a late lunch, see a movie, or…” She gives a wink, the elevator doors finally opening. “We could watch the boys in the new half of the apartment and you two could have some quality time together, in your bedroom.”

“Hmm, that sounds great.” Gu Wei sighs, leaning against the elevator wall and closing his eyes momentarily. “The boys were almost ready for a nap when I left.” The elevator stops and he opens his eyes, the doors open and he frowns. “That’s odd, I texted Yu’er to open the door for me.”

“Where are your keys?” Nanny asks, Gu Wei nodding to his right pocket and blushing. “Oh now, stop. I changed your diapers for goodness sake.” She pulls out the keys and unlocks the door, pausing just inside and hushing the others.

Chen Yu is dancing with a baby cradled to his chest. He whispers softly, kissing the babies head and smiling down by his own feet. Atop a blanket on the floor, the second baby begins to wake from his nap. The baby doesn’t cry, just blinking up at him and making little gurgling noises.

“Baba Wei should be back any minute.” Chen Yu croons, beginning to kneel down but groaning. “I forgot to open the door!” He turns, jolting at the trio watching him with smiles. “I’m sorry baobei, someone distracted me.” He sighs happily, seeing the casserole dish Mei-Ling places onto the counter. “You two are lifesavers. I think he’s lost weight.” He frowns at Gu Wei, Mei-Ling taking the infant from his arms and giggling down at the cooing infant at his feet.

Nanny approaches, stopping short to giggle herself. The blanket the baby is laying upon, has what appears to be a chalk outline surrounding him. A rattle above his head is also inside of a chalk-like outline. Gu Wei has begun unloading the groceries, but curiously heads into the living room to see what all the laughter is about.

“Pffft, Yu’er! Where did you find this?” Gu Wei asks, picking his own son up from the blanket and shaking his head at his husband.

“Baobei, you’d be surprised what you can find on the internet.” Chen Yu smirks, pointing to his son cradled in the crook of Mei-Ling’s arm. “I couldn’t find a blanket appropriate for their age.” He shrugs, the baby wiggling his arms. Gu Cheng is wearing a white pajama set, a cartoon stethoscope printed as if it’s hanging from his little neck. “You don’t like it? I knew I should have gotten the teacher blanket instead.” He mumbles, Gu Wei smiling at him.

“But, Qiuyue was on the blanket?” Gu Wei says, Chen Yu giving him a perplexed expression.

“Is that, bad? It’s just a blanket baobei. It doesn’t mean he is going to be a cop.” Chen Yu says, searching Gu Wei’s eyes. “What? What’s wrong?”

“It’s just, you don’t seem to…” Gu Wei sighs, a guilty look shadowing his face. “I try not to, but I do find myself giving Qiuyue a tiny bit more attention. But, you don’t favor your biological son over mine.”

“Of course not. To me, they’re both our sons.’” Chen Yu fidgets, realizing Gu Wei may take that statement to heart, and feel even more guilty. “I bet, it’s normal to favor your own blood.” He looks at Nanny, his eyes pleading. “I’ve read, many parents often favor the youngest. Of their own biological children.”

“I’m okay.” Gu Wei grins, his arms wrapping around Chen Yu’s waist. “I’m still finding reasons to fall even more madly in love with you.” He kisses his husband’s lips softly.

“Ahem.” Nanny clears her throat. “We ladies find ourselves in need of a nice big dose of cutie cuddles. A’Feng is taking his ladies out to dinner this evening. So, we don’t have to rush back.”

“Oh wonderful. I’ll heat up whatever you brought and we can chat.” Chen Yu says, his brows furrowing at the shake of Nanny’s head. “No?”

“You go back to work tomorrow.” Nanny says, Chen Yu sighing and holding his husband tighter. “So, you two, should spend a little time… in bed?”

“Yes!” Chen Yu tosses Gu Wei over his shoulder and turns quickly. “Thanks ladies! You have no idea how much we need this.” He hears the laughter and feels his husband swat him on the ass. “You thinking what I’m thinking?” He enters their bedroom, kicking the door closed behind him.

“Mn, most likely.” Gu Wei says, placed on his feet. He watches his husband strip down to his boxers and climb into the bed. “Room for me in there?” He asks, climbing in with his briefs and a tee shirt on.

“Of course.” Chen Yu opens his arms with a smile. “Come on baobei, you know it’s practically been two weeks already.” Gu Wei snuggles into his embrace, both men’s eyes drooping immediately. “I haven’t been sleeping well without you in my arms.” He kisses his husband’s forehead and they release a contented sigh in unison.

Gu Wei awakens to his husband’s side of the bed empty. He sighs sadly, hugging Chen Yu’s pillow. The pillow is still warm. He pouts and rolls over, looking for his cell phone to check the time. He jolts with a start, Chen Yu is knelt beside the bed smiling at him.

“I was debating whether or not to wake you.” Chen Yu says, rising to his feet. Gu Wei wrinkles his nose at the baggy sweatpants he is wearing. “We slept for two hours.” He smirks, Gu Wei not hiding the fact he is practically undressing him with his eyes.

“Nanny and meimei leave?” Gu Wei grumbles, but he smiles brightly at the shake of his husband’s head.

“I went out to relieve them, but was told to shower and take my lao gong out somewhere nice.” Chen Yu tugs Gu Wei out of bed and kisses him tenderly. “Let’s shower together, baobei.” He smirks, Gu Wei nodding and pulling on his waistband. “You know, there’s something else we haven’t had the time or energy for recently.” He chuckles, Gu Wei nearly purring and leading him toward the bathroom.

“Dessert.” Gu Wei grins over his shoulder. “Why don’t each, have a taste? While we have the chance.”

“I love the way you think, baobei.” Chen Yu closes the door behind them, an act he is trying to get into the habit of doing. He presses himself against Gu Wei’s backside and his arms circle his husband’s waist. He kisses Gu Wei’s neck, his hands slipping into his husband’s briefs to fondle his shaft. “Mmm, I don’t know about you, but I’ve missed this.”

Gu Wei moans softly, reaching both arms back to begin lowering Chen Yu’s sweats and boxers. He gasps, two of Chen Yu’s long, thick fingers forcing their way inside him. He cries out, swatting his husband’s large hand away from his leaking shaft. Heavy breathing and soft moans are filling the small room and he can’t be certain if they are his own or not. He is so deeply immersed in the pleasure of his husband’s hands and mouth on him, he jolts, not really knowing how they got into the warm shower. He braces his arms against the shower wall and whimpers at the sudden feeling of emptiness.

“Yu’er, hurry and… haaah!” Gu Wei is rendered speechless, Chen Yu thrusting halfway inside him.

“I’m sorry, baobei. I couldn’t wait anymore.” Chen Yu’s heavy breaths are right beside Gu Wei’s ear, causing him to shiver in excitement. “You okay?” Gu Wei shakes his head and Chen Yu immediately pulls out. “Shit, I’m sorry. I… mmmhh.” Chen Yu is cutoff, Gu Wei turning and kissing him passionately. “Wei?” He grins, his husband hopping into his arms and locking his limbs around him.

“It’s been too long. I want to watch you, cum undone.” Gu Wei quips, a coquettish smile on his face.

Chen Yu responds by thrusting fully inside his husband and pulling on a nipple. Gu Wei calls out for him to move and Chen Yu begins to thrust like a battering ram. Their tongues are warring for dominance and Chen Yu moans loudly. Gu Wei’s fingers gently pressing inside him. Both men are fighting to stay in control of themselves, but Gu Wei’s fingers thrust deep and curve slightly. Chen Yu whimpers, pulling back to look in his husband’s eyes.

“Yu’er, it’s okay to let go. We, might not get this chance often.” Gu Wei pants, thrusting his hips and his fingers harder. “Besides, ngh! We don’t have, the time to make love right now. Fuck me. The way I like it.”

Chen Yu’s mouth crushes onto Gu Wei’s, and the steamy shower becomes unbearably hot. Chen Yu’s hands give Gu Wei’s ass a squeeze, he feels Gu Wei’s fingers scissor open and he is about to seriously lose himself in his husband. Chen Yu’s mouth moves to the favorite nook of his husband’s neck, kissing and nibbling. Gu Wei elongates his neck, stretching his head back and crying out as he climaxes. He pulls his fingers from Chen Yu and grabs his face, kissing him so passionately, Chen Yu climaxes and pins him to the shower wall, both men breathing heavily and grinning at each other.

“Mmm, rest for a minute. When you get hard again, I’ll move.” Chen Yu says softly, nuzzling the side of Gu Wei’s neck.

“Ngh, I really don’t think it’s going to be long. I’m even hornier now than before we started.” Gu Wei grins, Chen Yu wiggling his brows with a smirk. He frowns, feeling Chen Yu sliding out of him. “Yu’er. Kiss me.” His legs drop to the floor and he spins them around, pinning Chen Yu to the wall. Now he’s smirking, Chen Yu biting his bottom lip and wrapping his legs around him. “Kiss me, and I’ll fuck you so good, you won’t remember your own name.”

“Damn, that sounds so fucking hot.” Chen Yu pulls Gu Wei in, kissing him urgently.

Chen Yu and Gu Wei have finally been sated, at least for now. They have both dressed casually, Chen Yu having shrugged his shoulders at Gu Wei’s raised brows. Chen Yu is wearing the tight black jeans that hug him firmly, with holes at the knees. He paired them with a red and green plaid button down shirt, tucked in only in the front. Gu Wei is wearing his favorite relaxed jeans, the ones that cling to his ass and bag slightly on his legs. He is wearing a burgundy pullover sweater, a deep v at the neck giving a glimpse of collarbone and pectoral muscles. They exit the bedroom, softly teasing each other and holding hands.

“Shhh, you better scoot. Before the boys wake up.” Nanny says, smiling softly at the sleeping baby in her arms. “Go on. And there’s no need to hurry back.” The couple begin to protest, but she narrows her eyes at them. “You won’t get this opportunity often. At least not right away.”

“Thank you, we love and appreciate you both.” Chen Yu says softly, blowing the women a kiss. “Hurry, Wei, before they change their minds.” He teases, tugging Gu Wei to the door. Once on the elevator, they fall quiet. They exchange a glance and Chen Yu can tell they are thinking the same thing. His fingers worry the wedding band on Gu Wei’s finger and he sighs. “Do you feel as guilty about leaving the boys as I do?” He asks, a pout on his lips.

“Oh thank goodness. It’s not just me.” Gu Wei says, leaning into his husband and taking a calming breath. “Crissy says, it’s important for the parents to get away now then. To recharge or whatever.” He nervously rubs his neck. “She says her and her husband go out for lunch or dinner once a week and then go grocery shopping together. She says it’s not exactly romantic, but she always feels more patient with her boys when she gets home.” They are now exiting the elevator, Mr. Su holds the door for them with a big smile. “It’s good to see you Mr. Su.”

“Likewise my boys. I see you’re getting a little recharge?” Mr. Su asks, giving Chen Yu a wink. “I can’t even imagine having two newborns. Go on, get outta here.”

“We are, it is really good to see you back, San.” Chen Yu says, patting the older man’s shoulder before heading out.

“So, what exactly are we going to do?” Gu Wei asks, being led to Chen Yu’s truck.

“First, I’m going to feed my baobei. Anything your craving?” Chen Yu asks, opening the passenger door for Gu Wei.

“Hmm, well, I just had dessert.” Gu Wei teases, winking down at his husband from inside the truck.

“Mn, we might be able to get in, a second helping later.” Chen Yu grins, closing the door and sauntering around to the driver side. “So, aside from me, what else are you craving?” He grins, Gu Wei giggling at him.

“Hmm, let’s hit the sushi place we like.” Gu Wei says, his stomach growling on cue.

“I should have known that.” Chen Yu grumbles to himself. “Alright, after we fuel up, let’s go to Adam’s Apple for a drink.” He purses his lips, pulling out of the parking lot.

“Yu’er? What’s wrong?” Gu Wei reaches over, taking his husband’s hand.

“It’s just, I want to enjoy a little quality time with you.” Chen Yu bites his lip.

“But, you don’t want to be away from the boys for long?” Gu Wei prompts, smiling. “I feel the same. We’ve barely left, but I’m worrying and missing them already.”

“Thank goodness!” Chen Yu sighs in relief. “I don’t want you to think that I don’t want, need to spend time with you, alone. But, they’re so little and adorable and, haaa I sound like a sap.” He chuckles, stopping at a red light and turning to give his husband a sheepish grin.

“No, you sound like a new Father.” Gu Wei grins.

The couple have had a lovely early dinner, with conversation and laughter. Now, they are entering a popular gay nightclub and Gu Wei is rather surprised to see it quite busy so early in the evening. Chen Yu leads him to a table in the back and heads to the bar to get them each a drink. Gu Wei pulls out his cellphone, checking in with Mei-Ling via text. He doesn’t want to seem as though he is not having a good time with his husband. Someone sits down beside him and he looks up with a grin, but it quickly falls away. A slick man in baggy jeans and a tight tank top smiles at him.

“I’m sorry, but this seat is taken.” Gu Wei says, his jaw clenching as the man reaches for his hand.

“Did it hurt, when you fell from heaven?” The man asks, Gu Wei rolls his eyes but suddenly smiles brightly.

“That line is older than he is.” Chen Yu says, placing a beer and a cocktail on the table. He sits right down on his husband’s lap, scoffing at the poor attempt by the newcomer. “That’s not a pickup line.” He turns to pout at Gu Wei. “Baobei, I’m jealous. Jealous of your heart.” He winks. “Because it’s pounding inside you right now, but I’m not.”

“Pfffft! Well, I think we could fix that problem, if you’re up for it.” Gu Wei says, desperately trying to hold in his laughter as the man turns red and dashes off. “Yu’er, that was a great pickup line.” He studies his husband for a moment. “I’m proud of you.”

“What for, it wasn’t that great.” Chen Yu says, blushing and taking a long pull from his beer bottle.

“Not that, but it was impressive.” Gu Wei says, only slightly surprised that Chen Yu makes no move to vacate his lap. “I’m proud that didn’t get jealous or, aggressive with him.”

“Nah, I think it’s finally started to sink in.” Chen Yu says, turning to look at Gu Wei with a mixture of absolute adoration and bewilderment. “You, for some crazy reason, you love me. Almost as much as I love you.” He kisses Gu Wei, feeling himself being readjusted to straddle his husband’s lap. “Mmm, ngh.” He pulls back, both men breathing heavily. “I’ve missed, this. You, us. I miss falling asleep with you in my arms, or me in yours.” He frowns, Gu Wei leaning his chin onto his chest and smiling sadly up at him.

“You go back to work tomorrow.” Gu Wei sighs. “Maybe, we can do this again, in a week or two? Once a month, for now… should be okay?”

“Mn, sounds like a date.” Chen Yu kisses him once more, but slides off his lap groaning. “Damn, much more and you’ll be doing me right here.” He winks, Gu Wei squirming and nodding. “So, how are our boys?”

“You knew?” Gu Wei pouts, looking guilty.

“Mn, because I was thinking of sneaking off to the bathroom to check.” Chen Yu admits, shrugging his shoulders. He takes Gu Wei’s hand, holding it tightly. “You sure you’re going to be okay tomorrow? Just you and the boys?” He is a bit worried, neither of them have been solely responsible for both boys simultaneously yet. And Gu Wei still feels inadequate in his parenting skills. “Should I, ask jiejie to drop by?”

“Yu’er, we’ll be fine.” Gu Wei says, trying to convince them both. “I’ll nap with the boys. Everything will be fine.”

Chen Yu suggested they take a stroll before heading home. They are walking hand in hand, stopping occasionally to look in store windows. Suddenly, something catches Chen Yu’s eyes and he drags Gu Wei into a small shop. Gu Wei looks around in confusion, the shop is full of handmade wooden furniture and crafts. He watches his husband’s eyes light up and he follows his gaze. In the window sits a small wooden rocking horse. The seat, or saddle, looks big enough for two Chen Yu hails the old gentleman shopkeeper.

“Yu’er? I think our boys are a bit young for that.” Gu Wei grins, there is a special tenderness in his husband’s demeanor.

“Wei, it’s just.” Chen Yu clears his throat, the shopkeeper removing the item from the window with a smile on his face. “I remember, my Baba, he made a rocking horse very much like this when I was little. I, think I saw a cowboy on tv and wanted a horse.” He chuckles, Gu Wei closing the distance between them and taking his hand. “I think, I was four? Maybe five.” He blinks, a tear sliding down his cheek. “He took a class and everything, just to make it for me. I remember, he said ‘A’Yu, we can’t keep a real horse in our apartment. But, this one won’t make a mess and you can ride him wherever you want.’ It’s just, a really precious memory and I want our boys to have something similar. I can’t even begin to match this master craftsman here, and I lost the one my Baba made when I went into foster care after my parents died.” He falls quiet, holding his wallet in his hand and looking far off.

“Well now, I think this little pony must’ve been made for your home.” The shopkeeper says softly. “You know, it’s the first one I ever made for two. I don’t know why, I just thought, it seems like a sturdy little fella.” He quotes a price that Chen Yu knows is far below its worth. “I was a foster kid myself. I know, how things get lost. I also, lost my life partner last spring. He had wanted to foster, but… well, perhaps he and your parents guided my hands.” He clears his throat, tears threatening to fall. “Ah, one last touch.” He ties a large blue bow around the rocking horse’s neck and smiles fondly at the younger couple. “Do an old man a favor?” Chen Yu nods eagerly his eyes overflowing with tears. “When your boys get big enough, take a picture? I’d really love to see that.”

“Mn.” Chen Yu has to clear his throat several times, pulling up a photo on his cellphone. “It might be awhile. They’re going to be two weeks old tomorrow. But I’ll bring you a framed copy, sir. Thank you, very much.” He bows, tucking the pint sized pony under his arm and taking Gu Wei’s hand. He pauses just before he opens the door and turns back with a smile. “I’m sure, your lao gong is, very proud of you. I know, I would crumble if I lost my lao gong. It takes a lot of courage and strength to not fall into a deep despair. I’m sure, we’ll see you again, sir.” With that, the young couple leave, the lonely shopkeeper sobbing and looking to the heavens with a soft smile.

Nanny had giggled at the sight of Chen Yu carrying in the rocking horse, until she heard him reminisce about his own. Chen Yu had insisted on driving the ladies back to the manor and now, he enters the apartment to hear a soft wailing and Gu Wei trying to quiet a fussy baby. Chen Yu hurries into the nursery, one baby laying awake and quiet and Gu Wei pacing the floor with the other.

“What’s wrong?” Chen Yu asks, kissing the infants forehead and rubbing Gu Wei’s back. “No fever.”

“I don’t know.” Gu Wei says helplessly, Chen Yu taking the baby onto his shoulder. “They’ve both been changed, fed, and burped.” He narrows his eyes, Chen Yu has placed the baby on his shoulder and lifted his little legs so his knees are practically in his armpits. “What are you…” A small, toot is heard and the baby coos, snuggling his little head closer to Chen Yu’s neck. “I really didn’t even think about gas. I was so panicked.” He shakes his head, the other baby now making cute little noises for attention. He picks up him up, grinning at his husband. “You know, if I didn’t know better, I’d think that was your biological baobei. You’re so good with them both.” He frowns, his mind wandering.

“Wei, something bothering you?” Chen Yu asks, a large hand on Qiuyue’s back and an arm around Gu Wei.

“Do you, think we should tell them which one of is their biological Father?” Gu Wei looks down, Cheng blinking up at him.

“Hm, when they’re older, if it’s something important to them, then we tell them. But to me, they are both mine, and both yours.” Chen Yu kisses Gu Wei’s temple. “Looks like this little guy is worn right out.” He gently kisses Qiuyue’s cheek, before heading out to the master bedroom. He gently lays the baby in a bassinet beside the bed. “Our other little man still awake?”

“Mn, maybe he knows you go back to work tomorrow.” Gu Wei says, placing Cheng in his husband’s arms and sitting down beside them on the bed. “He needs to get some extra Baba time in.” He rests his own head on Chen Yu’s shoulder.

Later that same evening, the couple are changing the boys after a feeding. Chen Yu’s cellphone begins to ring and they exchange a perplexed look. They both recognize that ringtone, it’s the police station.

“Detective Chen.” Chen Yu answers, a baby cradled in the crook of his arm.

“A’Yu, I know that you’re back tomorrow, but I need you on an easy case.” Captain Lang says, a bit of strain in her voice. “We’re spread pretty thin here.” She sighs.

“No problem Cap, what’s the case?” Chen Yu asks, rising to pace and gently bounce the baby in his arms.

“Unattended death.” Captain Lang says wearily. “You know procedure, all unattended deaths are first ruled out as a homicide. First on scene officer says it looks like a suicide.”

“Alright. Just text me the address. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Chen Yu says, laying the now sleeping baby back into his bassinet. He ends the call, a text immediately with the location. “I’m sorry, Wei. I’ll be as quick as I can. First on scene says it looks like a suicide.” He fidgets, Gu Wei rubbing the back of the baby on his shoulder.

“It’s okay, Yu’er. We knew this was going to happen eventually.” Gu Wei smiles, trying to hide his anxiety about being left alone with two newborns. Chen Yu bends over to kiss his lips.

“You’ll be fine, baobei. We’ve had plenty of practice.” Chen Yu soothes, grabbing his keys and wallet from his nightstand. “I love you, and I have faith in you.” Gu Wei smiles up at him, nodding and feeling more confident. “Text or call me if you need anything.”

Chen Yu reluctantly heads out, seeing the address is not far off. He hops in his truck and is on scene in just a few minutes. And this is a gruesome scene. He approaches a cordoned off stretch of sidewalk, a man’s broken body looking like a child’s well loved rag doll. A small pool of blood beneath the victims head catches Chen Yu’s attention and he shakes his head, an officer stepping over.

“Looks like a pretty grotesque suicide, huh Detective?” The young officer comments, the coroner van pulling up at last.

“You’re still green, kid.” Chen Yu says, looking up at the high rise apartment building in front of him. “Any idea what floor he was thrown from?”

“Thrown?” The young officer pales, flipping through a notebook. “Ugh, I got some statements from the crowd. He lives, lived, on the ninth floor.” He swallows a lump, watching Dr. Lin pause behind Chen Yu.

“This happened how long ago?” Chen Yu asks, his eyes scanning the body.

“Roughly, twenty minutes ago?” The officer says, looking at his wristwatch.

“The blood.” Chen Yu says, seeing signs of livor mortis, the purplish bruise like discoloration of the blood pooling in a cadaver. “It’s clotted, and here.” He points out the livor mortis in the dead man’s limbs. “He’s been dead a lot longer than twenty minutes.”

“Why do they even bother calling me out?” Dr. Lin says, kneeling down beside Chen Yu. “For the body to be in this state, he fell, or actually was thrown, from a great height.”

“Vic lived on the ninth floor.” Chen Yu says rising. “I’m going to need to see the apartment.” He says, looking at the building lobby. “I guess, it’s time to wake up the onsite manager and get a look at my crime scene.”
