Chapter 1: Beginnings

Chapter Text

She stared at the FAQ for a while, rolling the various words around in her head. One of her roommates stared up at the ceiling while sighing. "It's going to be fine! There are a ton of other people posting drabble collections. You aren't going to be kicked off the internet for making your own drabble collection as a healthy writing exercise!"
"Yes, I know, but uploading is scary! People are going to see!" She shivered slightly at the thought.
"Yes, that's the point hon. We need more practice at writing so we are committing to writing a little something every day and tossing it up there. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to be smart, it just has to exist. The rest rest will follow after."
The two girls hugged inside their apartment, happy to be together and trying new things.
"Last time, when we didn't publish, we were managing 1000 words a day, right?" her roommate asked in a calm and measured tone.
She nodded into her roommate's shoulder shyly and hugged her more tightly.
"Okay, so why don't we start there and see where it goes. Maybe big things, maybe small things, but the important part is they are there!"
Sniffling slightly, she nodded at her roommate. "Okay. And you'll be here to help?"
"No matter what." One more squeeze was squoze before the hug was released.
She smiled before turning back to the computer. "Alright, then I guess we should give this a go. Only question is, what should we write about?"
"Well, we've been bouncing around a few different story ideas, the time loop killer on an intergalactic cruise ship, your beef with christianity, HDG..." Her roommate trailed off as she slipped a pair of sunglasses on. "Why are you wearing those? We're inside."
She grinned back. "They let me see the world as I want it to be!"
Her roommate frowned lightly at her. "Blinders, great. Well, you could write about those I guess."
"Mrowr!" said the fox.
"And you could also write about that, yes!" Her roommate said while walking over to give the adorable little ball of fur some well deserved scritches. "It doesn't have to be strict but put your best effort into doing it and it will be helpful, I promise!"
She sighed happily but nervously. "Yeah, okay. This should be fun, yeah?"
"Yeah." Her roommate smiled at her, that confident warm smile that gave her tingles.
"And you'll be here all the way?"
"The whole way through." She felt like she might swoon from the eyes her roommate was giving her.
"Then I'll give it my best shot." She nodded, to herself and her roommate.
"Good girl."
After the warmth left her cheeks she cleared her throat and asked "but what should I write right now?"
Her roommate suppressed a smirk before replying, "Ah, yes. Probably some sort of introduction would be best. Let your readers get to know you and all."
She dragged a hand across her face. "Do you really think this will have any readers?" She asked with a sigh.
Her roommate let the smirk out. "I can think of at least one person who might read it. If she knows about it anyways."
She blushed slightly at the insinuation. "Stoppppp! Bullying me!"
"Hehehehe" Her roommate cackled. "Honestly the first thing you should probably do is stop using Notepad++ and get an app with grammar help."
She pouted up at her roommate. "Are you suggesting my grammar is bad?"
"I would never!" Her roommate declared, acting all affronted. "Just would make it easier to do words good."
"Do words good?"
"Shush you, we all have our own specialties."
She giggled slightly hysterically at her roommate's antics before blowing out a long sigh.
"You remember when I had those ideas about creating a perfect language to write in?"
"Yeah, they were actually pretty cool if I'm honest."
"I wanted to start writing in that."
Her roommate let out a sharp laugh before clutching her side. "Of course, you would want to invent a whole new language before you start writing." She let the rest of her laughter out with a long exhale, and then continued. "Once you invent the language you can write in it, but nothing is stopping you from writing in english."
She stuck out her tongue at her roommate before turning back to the computer screen. "An introduction, huh?"
Her roommate smirked again behind her at the not so subtle topic change. "Yeah, you should let your audience get to know you! Tell them about what you enjoy writing and give them a feel for what to expect!"
"So, like, fuckin' Stardew Valley and shit?"
Laughter bubbled up out of her tall friend before she suddenly sneezed. "Ugh, that tickled in my nose, not doing that again. No, like how you enjoy working with one or two characters at a time, and your idea for the centaurworld ending."
She pouted up at the taller woman. "I am not comfortable writing song lyrics!"
Her roommate sighed before handing her the fox. "Pet the fox. She needs scritches."
"Mrowr!" agreed the fox.
She sighed before doing as requested and giving the squirmy fox her scritches. The fox was an adorable little rascal, all covered in floof with a long tail who absolutely loved affection.
"Who's a good little fox? You are!" She cooed happily at the fox that was quickly melting into a puddle in her lap.
"I'm glad you're doing this," her roommate spoke up with a smile. She honestly had a very nice smile, if also dangerously sharp, to go with her cute pixie cut hair and her comfy cargo leggings.
The writer smiled back at her roommate. "I am too. Hopefully it goes well, but, nothing ventured, nothing gained!"
After the fox hopped down and started running in circles around the room she wiped off her skirt and refocused on the monitor. "Oh shit! I had text to speech turned on!"
"Huh?!"
