Chapter Text

Chapter 1

The early autumn sunlight filtered through the towering windows of the lecture hall, casting a warm glow over the rows of students hunched over their notes. Sunghoon sat near the back, as usual, with his pale skin almost luminescent against the dark wooden desk. His thick black hair fell loosely over his forehead, partly covering the mole under his eye, a feature he both loved and hated depending on the day. Today, it made him painfully aware of how exposed he felt.

He traced absentmindedly along the edge of his notebook, his thoughts tangled in a mess of longing and self-reproach. Heeseung. Just the thought of Heeseung’s name made his chest tighten. A few days ago, Sunghoon had confessed everything, heart on his sleeve, voice trembling with a mix of fear and hope. The alpha, kind and oblivious, had let out a soft sigh and smiled, so gentle it almost broke him all over again.

“I don’t see you like that Hoon, you’re like a little brother to me, I don’t think I can give you the answer you want” he had added a faint, “I hope we can still be friends though.” Sunghoon had nodded, lips curved into a weak, practiced smile. “Of course, friends.” But inside, the ache throbbed like a stubborn wound he didn’t know how to heal.

The lecture hall bell rang, cutting through his spiraling thoughts. Sunghoon packed his things slowly, reluctant to leave the small bubble of quiet and familiarity the hall provided. He knew his friends would be waiting for him but he didn’t have the energy to face them with anything resembling normalcy. A quick wave to Jay across the room was all he managed before slipping out into the crisp autumn air.

By the time he reached the café where he worked part time, the sun at its highest peak, painting the sidewalk with the shadows of trees. Sunghoon tied his apron with meticulous care, focusing on the familiar rhythm of cups and trays, the clink of porcelain and the hiss of the espresso machine. It was his sanctuary, a small pocket of distance in a world that suddenly felt heavier.

That was when Ni-Ki appeared.

The alpha’s presence was impossible to ignore. Tall, sharp eyed, and impeccably handsome, Ni-Ki carried the kind of confidence that made the air around him feel warmer, heavier. His gaze landed on Sunghoon immediately, and for a moment, time seemed to hesitate. The omega’s thick black hair and pale skin caught the fading light in a way that made Ni-Ki’s chest tighten unexpectedly. His instincts, alpha instincts, sharpened and unyielding, recognized the scent, the vulnerability, the subtle pull that Sunghoon exuded even without trying.

“Can I get a latte?” Ni-Ki asked, voice deep, smooth, casual, but with an undertone that suggested he wasn’t just here for coffee.

Sunghoon blinked, shy under the alphas gaze. “Uh… sure,” he replied, moving mechanically, hands trembling just slightly as he prepared the drink. Ni-Ki’s eyes lingered, and the faint, almost imperceptible twitch of inquisitiveness in the alpha’s posture made Sunghoon’s pulse race. He could subtly smell Ni-Ki’s scent, sharp and commanding, layered over the faint notes of espresso and cinnamon in the café. Something in his chest clenched and loosened all at once.

Ni-Ki leaned casually against the counter, watching Sunghoon with an intensity that bordered on invasive, making the omega a little self conscious. Every gesture, every subtle movement carried meaning: the alpha’s interest.

“I haven’t seen you here before,” Ni-Ki said casually, though his tone held an undercurrent of something more intimate, more dangerous. “You’re good at this.”

Sunghoon felt heat creep to his cheeks, not entirely from embarrassment. “Th-thank you,” he stammered, voice barely above a whisper. The way Ni-Ki’s sharp gaze softened just slightly made Sunghoon’s chest tighten in a strange, unfamiliar way.

Over the next few weeks, Ni-Ki lingered, coming religiously into the cafe to work on his laptop, pretending to sip his coffee, but every glance he shot Sunghoon carried a weight. Sunghoon tried to focus when he came in, cleaning the counter, taking orders, maintaining the rhythm he knew so well, but his attention kept snapping back to Ni-Ki, his scent, his stare, the subtle tension coiling in the air as the weeks passed.

And somewhere deep inside, Sunghoon realized with a jolt that this was not like what he felt around Heeseung. Heeseung had been gentle, considerate, kind and utterly unattainable. Ni-Ki was different. Ni-Ki was fire and ice, persistent chaos wrapped in sharp lines and sharper instincts, and he was here. Right now. And Sunghoon couldn’t resist.

Its mid-afternoon, the café had thinned out, leaving only the soft hum of the espresso machine and the occasional clatter of dishes. Sunghoon moved with practiced ease, hands deftly balancing plates and cups, yet his mind remained elsewhere. Ni-Ki’s presence lingered like a weight in the air, subtle but impossible to ignore. Every movement he made, the tilt of his head, the faint curve of his lips set Sunghoon’s pulse racing.

He’s heard of Ni-Ki before, seen him around campus but had never really been physically near to the alpha, being an omega Sunghoon generally stayed away from alphas he’s not familiar with especially alphas like Ni-Ki who’s from a different pack.

Ni-Ki approached the counter, this time leaning a little closer than necessary. The faint scent of the alpha reached Sunghoon before Ni-Ki even spoke. It was subtle, but the effect was immediate, a flush rising to Sunghoon’s cheeks, a tightening in his chest, the low, involuntary thrum of his omega instincts responding to the alpha so near. He swallowed, trying to focus on the iced coffee he was preparing, but his fingers shook slightly.

“You’re nervous,” Ni-Ki said, voice low and deep, carrying an edge of curiosity. He didn’t ask, he stated, and Sunghoon’s heartbeat leapt.

“I… I’m fine,” Sunghoon replied, attempting a casual tone. He hated how unconvincing it sounded, how weak the lie felt. Ni-Ki’s gaze didn’t waver, sharp and piercing, sizing him up as if reading the layers of his heart like an open book.

“I can tell you’re not,” Ni-Ki continued, leaning just a little closer, enough that Sunghoon could feel the warmth radiating off him. “something happened?” The alpha’s eyes softened only slightly, but the knowing undertone was unmistakable.

Sunghoon froze, chest tightening. “I’m… I don’t know what you mean,” he said, voice faltering despite himself. Ni-Ki smirked faintly, clearly not fooled.

“You’re hurt, not physically…” Ni-Ki said simply. “Emotionally.”

Sunghoon’s hands stilled on the counter. He wanted to shrink into himself, vanish, hide. The truth was heavy in his chest, and Ni-Ki’s unflinching observation made it burn all the more. He couldn’t lie, though, not to this alpha who seemed to read him so easily.

“I… I am,” Sunghoon admitted quietly. “But it doesn’t matter.”

Ni-Ki’s gaze sharpened. “It matters. That’s why you’re like this, distracted, hurt.” The last word lingered in the air between them, Sunghoon’s breath hitched.

The café door jingled softly, and Sunghoon momentary relief turned into unease.

Heeseung stood in the doorway. The younger alpha paused near the entrance, book bag slung over his shoulder, a faint smile on his face as he scanned the café. His eyes fell on Sunghoon almost immediately. Sunghoon forced a polite smile, waving briefly. Inside, his chest constricted. Heeseung had no idea how deeply his rejection had cut, how Ni-Ki’s presence now stirred into the confusing mix of emotions.

Heeseung approached the counter, oblivious to the tension that had thickened the air. “Hey, Hoon. Busy day?” he asked cheerfully. His gaze lingered for a moment on Ni-Ki, curiosity flickering in his eyes, though he said nothing.

“Yeah… just the usual,” Sunghoon replied, voice tight. He could feel the flicker of curiosity from Ni-Ki beside him, a subtle shift in posture, a quiet assertion that made Heeseung’s presence feel like an intrusion.

Heeseung smiled at Sunghoon again, unaware of the internal feelings of the other. “Good. I wanted to see if you wanted to come to a music jam tonight. I know you’re busy, but…” His gaze softened, warm and brotherly, full of unintentional cruelty to Sunghoon’s already wounded heart. “It would be fun.”

Sunghoon’s stomach sank. Heeseung’s intentions were innocent, yet they reminded him of everything he wanted and couldn’t have. He glanced at Ni-Ki who simply watched the interaction, lips twitching with a smirk that promised subtle revenge or perhaps protection, though Sunghoon couldn’t yet tell which.

“I… I can’t tonight,” Sunghoon said quietly, forcing a polite shake of his head. “Maybe another time.”

Heeseung nodded, smiling still, completely unaware of the curious tension radiating from Ni-Ki. “Sure, no problem. Just let me know. See you later.”

As Heeseung left, the door closing behind him with a soft click, Ni-Ki turned to Sunghoon, expression unreadable but undeniably intense. He reached out, brushing Sunghoon’s fingers with his own, lingering just long enough to make his heart stutter. “Him?” He says simply throwing a nod backwards as if seeing the interaction was like looking into Sunghoon’s entire life. Sunghoon just lets out a quiet sign avoiding the alphas eyes. “See? That’s the problem with him. He doesn’t see you,” Ni-Ki murmured, almost possessively. “But I do. I’ll never let you suffer alone.”

Sunghoon’s breath caught. The warmth, the proximity, the raw alpha energy emanating from Ni-Ki, it was intoxicating, terrifying, and impossible to resist. His omega instincts screamed for comfort, for protection, and yet his heart ached for someone else.

“Why… why are you being so nice to me?” Sunghoon asked, voice trembling. “I… I barely know you.”

Ni-Ki leaned closer, tilting his head just enough to catch Sunghoon’s gaze. “Because I want to,” he said simply, certainly clear in every word. “And because you deserve someone who notices you. Someone who doesn’t just look but sees. I see you, Sunghoon.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and intimate. Sunghoon’s mind raced, heart pounding, and a new heat stirred within him not from Heeseung, not from his heartbreak, but from the alpha standing just inches away, offering something dangerously real and undeniably magnetic.

For the first time in days, maybe weeks, Sunghoon felt a flicker of something other than pain… hope, curiosity, and the faintest whisper of desire. He didn’t know where this was heading, didn’t know if it was safe, but he couldn’t deny the pull between them.

And somewhere deep inside, he realized that his life and his heart were about to change in ways he couldn’t yet imagine.

The café had quieted down completely by the early evening, leaving Sunghoon alone with Ni-Ki at a small corner table. The faint scent of espresso lingered in the air, mingling subtly with Ni-Ki’s alpha pheromones. Sunghoon felt the pull immediately, a heat that had nothing to do with his earlier heartbreak and everything to do with the alpha sitting across from him.

Ni-Ki leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, eyes sharp yet gentle. “Talk to me,” he said. The words weren’t a request; they were a demand wrapped in care, the kind only an alpha who wanted to protect could give.

Sunghoon hesitated, fingers twisting the edge of his apron. “I… I’m fine,” he murmured, though his voice lacked conviction.

Ni-Ki raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “You’re not. I can smell it — your heart, your stress, the way your scent changes when you’re upset.” The alpha leaned forward slightly, the weight of dominance making Sunghoon chest tighten. “Tell me what’s wrong, I promise you can trust me.”

Sunghoon swallowed hard. It was strange how easily Ni-Ki saw through him, how unyielding yet gentle his gaze was. He felt like an open book under those sharp eyes. “It’s… that’s Heeseung, we’ve been part of the same friend group since I started studying” he admitted softly, voice barely audible. “I… I confessed to him how I feel, and he… he doesn’t… feel the same.”

The words fell heavy between them, and Ni-Ki’s expression softened. He reached across the table, brushing a hand lightly against Sunghoon’s. The touch was fleeting, yet it left a spark that raced up Sunghoon’s spine. “I see,” Ni-Ki murmured. “I’m sorry. That… that must hurt.”

Sunghoon nodded, pressing a hand to his chest. “It does… more than I can explain.”

“You shouldn’t have to go through it alone,” Ni-Ki said, leaning a little closer. The subtle heat of his alpha pheromones enveloped Sunghoon, and his omega instincts responded with a flutter of longing he could neither deny nor control. “Not when I’m here. Not when I can help.”

Sunghoon’s chest tightened further. He wanted to resist, to keep his heart guarded, but Ni-Ki’s presence was intoxicating. There was a possessive edge to the alpha that made it clear he wanted to claim, to protect, to keep Sunghoon safe from heartbreak. And for the first time in weeks, Sunghoon felt the fragile stirrings of comfort, of hope.

“I… I don’t know what to do,” Sunghoon admitted, voice trembling. “I… I like him… but he… he doesn’t… see me like that.”

Ni-Ki’s thumb brushed lightly over the back of Sunghoon’s hand. “Then let him go. Not because you want to, but because you deserve someone who sees you, truly sees you. Someone who notices when your heart aches and doesn’t walk away.” The aggressive deep tone of Ni-Ki’s voice wasn’t threatening, it was protective, a promise of attention and care that Sunghoon had never felt before.

Sunghoon’s lips parted slightly, eyes wide, breath catching. He wanted to argue, to protest, to cling to what little hope remained for Heeseung but the truth pressed against him, undeniable. Ni-Ki’s scent, his presence, the energy, and the careful yet certain way he reached for Sunghoon’s hand… it was almost overwhelming.

The conversation paused as the café door opened, and Sunghoon’s friends arrived. Jungwon, Jake, Sunoo and Jay all carried the casual energy of a Friday evening, laughing and chatting as they approached the counter. Sunghoon quickly disentangled his hand from the alphas, cheeks burning faintly.

“Sunghoon! Finally done with work?” Jungwon exclaimed, clapping a hand on Sunghoon’s shoulder. “We were waiting for you!”

“Yeah, we thought we’d grab a bite together,” Sunoo added, glancing around. His sharp omega senses picked up the lingering tension in the air, and he shot Sunghoon a curious look.

Ni-Ki stood slightly back, letting Sunghoon interact with his friends. Yet the comforting alpha presence didn’t vanish, every time Sunghoon would feel unease, his gaze would find Ni-Ki’s across the room and he’d instantly feel calmer.

“Guys, this is…” Sunghoon hesitated for a fraction of a second before introducing the older alpha. “This is Ni-Ki… he’s… a friend I’ve made recently.”

The group’s eyes widened slightly, all noting the alpha’s commanding presence and sharp features. Jay, Sunghoon’s childhood best friend, leaned in, curiosity clear. “Nice to meet you, Ni-Ki. Sunghoon’s mentioned you a few times, says you’ve been keeping him company when we all have classes” He glanced meaningfully at Sunghoon, who flushed under the attention.

Heeseung, who had arrived a few moments later with his guitar slung over his shoulder, noticed the closeness of the omega and foreign alpha immediately. He paused near the entrance, watching Sunghoon laugh at something Ni-Ki had said, the faint blush coloring his cheeks. Something tight coiled in he’s chest, an unfamiliar, unwelcome twist of jealousy.

Ni-Ki, ever perceptive, caught the flicker of Heeseung’s gaze. His lips curved into a subtle smirk, possessiveness sharpened like a blade. He moved just a step closer to Sunghoon, brushing lightly against his arm, sending a clear, unspoken message.

Heeseung’s jaw tightened as he approached the group. “Hey guys, I just wanted to see if Sunghoon wanted to join us for the jam tonight,” he said casually, though his voice carried an edge he didn’t intend. The alpha instinct, subtle and undeniable, flared within him, the possessive need to claim what he had let slip too late.

Sunghoon’s stomach twisted. He wanted to respond gently, to reassure Heeseung that there’s nothing going on between him and the older alpha, but Ni-Ki’s steady presence at his side made it impossible. The possessive tension between the two alphas, Heeseung out of oblivious jealousy, Ni-Ki from protective instinct made Sunghoon’s pulse race.

“I… I think I’m busy tonight,” Sunghoon said softly, careful not to betray the storm inside him. Heeseung’s gaze softened, a little hurt flickering, while Ni-Ki’s smirk deepened, smug energy coiling around him like a halo.

The evening stretched on, a delicate dance of emotions, pheromones, and unspoken possessiveness. Sunghoon felt both overwhelmed and strangely comforted, caught between the warmth of Heeseung’s brotherly kindness and Ni-Ki’s magnetic, protective attention.

As the café closed and Sunghoon prepared to leave, Ni-Ki slipped his hand around the small of Sunghoon’s back, guiding him gently toward the door. The gesture was subtle yet commanding, a clear assertion of intimacy. Sunghoon’s heart hammered in response, a mix of fear, excitement, and longing.

“Don’t worry,” Ni-Ki murmured softly, voice low enough that only Sunghoon could hear. “I’ve got you.”

Outside, the cool night air brushed against their faces, carrying the faint scent of autumn leaves and distant city lights. Sunghoon inhaled sharply, aware of the tension coiling inside him, the heat of Ni-Ki’s presence, and the faint ache of what he had lost with Heeseung.

Somewhere deep in his chest, Sunghoon realized the truth: things were changing. He didn’t know how far, or where it would lead, but the pull of Ni-Ki’s presence had already begun to reshape the course of his heart.

The following week passed in a blur of lectures, study sessions, and café shifts. Sunghoon found himself replaying every moment with Ni-Ki , the quiet attentiveness, the gentle smiles, the way Ni-Ki seemed to notice small details about him. The ache for Heeseung lingered, soft but persistent, a dull thrum beneath the growing curiosity and comfort Ni-Ki brought into his life.

It was during a late afternoon shift at the café that Sunghoon felt the familiar pull of Ni-Ki’s presence. Ni-Ki entered casually, leaning lightly against the counter, his dark leather jacket slightly rolled at the sleeves. Sunghoon noticed him immediately, catching the subtle waves of his alpha presence, but the effect was inviting rather than overwhelming.

“You’ve been working hard,” Ni-Ki said softly, voice calm, almost teasing. “Don’t forget to take a break.”

Sunghoon smiled faintly, grateful for the concern. “I know… just trying to keep up.” His words sounded smaller than intended, but Ni-Ki’s expression encouraged him without pressuring.

“I’m here if you want company,” Ni-Ki added, sitting in the small chair across from him. There was no push, no insistence, just a quiet presence that made Sunghoon’s chest feel lighter. His omega instincts responded to the alpha’s calm energy, a gentle flutter of comfort and warmth.

Sunghoon exhaled, feeling the tension of the past week ease slightly. “Thanks… it’s nice, actually.”

For a moment, the café felt like a little bubble of peace. Sunghoon could laugh softly, move with ease, and let Ni-Ki sit near him without feeling trapped. The alphas eyes were attentive, noticing the faint lines of stress in Sunghoon shoulders, the way he shifted when no one was looking, but he gave Sunghoon space, a subtle, respectful alpha attentiveness that made the omegas pulse quicken in an unfamiliar but pleasant way.

Later, when the café door opened, Heeseung entered, his signature bag slung over his shoulder. Sunghoon’s heart tightened briefly at the sight, the reminder of the rejection lingering like a shadow.

Heeseung’s gaze landed on Sunghoon, and he smiled warmly. “Hey, Hoonie. Just wanted to see if you wanted to come to the hangout with the gang tonight, they’re all coming to the bar to watch the jam and grab late dinner after.”

Sunghoon glanced at Ni-Ki, who offered a small smile across the counter. There was no pressure, just a quiet reassurance. “I have an assignment, I’m busy tonight,” Sunghoon said softly, trying to sound casual.

Heeseung’s expression softened, a hint of disappointment flashing across his face. “Oh… okay. Maybe another time then, the gangs been missing you lately.” He glanced at Ni-Ki, sensing the subtle presence but not understanding the bond between the two.

When Heeseung left, Ni-Ki leaned slightly closer, his voice low enough for Sunghoon to hear. “Don’t worry about him,” he said gently. “I’m just glad to see you smiling again.”

Sunghoon felt warmth spread through his chest. The words were simple, kind, and comforting. He realized that Ni-Ki’s attention wasn’t about claiming him, it was about noticing him, being there.

The evening passed quietly, filled with shared laughter, small talk, and the calm reassurance of company. By the time Sunghoon locked the café door for the night, he felt lighter than he had in weeks. Ni-Ki walked beside him, side by side, close enough to feel the alphas body heat.

The city lights twinkled above them, a soft backdrop to the unspoken understanding growing between them. Sunghoon didn’t know where this connection would lead, but for the first time in weeks, he felt hope, happiness.

The weekend arrived with the crisp, golden air of early autumn, and Sh found himself walking across campus toward the library, carrying a stack of textbooks heavier than he felt capable of managing. He glanced around, spotting familiar faces, the shifting leaves, the soft hum of university life, and felt the quiet ache of lingering heartbreak, mingled with a flutter of anticipation for the moments later that day when he’d see Ni-Ki.

Said alpha was waiting outside the library, leaning casually against the brick wall. The alpha’s dark eyes met his, calm and attractive, and Sunghoon felt the soft pull of his omega instincts responding to the steady energy of him.

“Hey,” Ni-Ki greeted, offering a light, easy nod. “Mind if I walk with you?”

Sunghoon hesitated for only a moment before shaking his head. “Of course not,” he said quietly, feeling a flutter of comfort at the simple, unobtrusive offer.

The two walked side by side, the campus alive with students, leaves crunching underfoot, and the faint smell of autumn in the air. Sunghoon felt himself relax around the alpha’s presence, the tension from the week slipping away with each step.

“You’ve been looking stressed,” Ni-Ki said after a few moments, voice casual but laced with concern. “Studying too much?”

Sunghoon let out a soft laugh, a little breathless. “Yeah… I guess. I just want to stay on top of things.” His fingers fiddled with the strap of his bag, a subtle sign of nerves that Ni-Ki caught without comment.

“You’re doing well,” Ni-Ki said simply. “Even if it doesn’t feel like it.” His tone carried warmth, a gentle confidence that made Sunghoon’s chest lift. “And… if you ever want a break, I’m around.”

Sunghoon smiled, the words comforting in a way he hadn’t expected. There was no pressure, just a soft, kind attentiveness. His heart, still tender from Heeseung’s rejection, responded cautiously, drawn to Ni-Ki.

Later, they stopped by a small campus café to grab iced drinks, the two of them talking quietly about classes, hobbies, and the small, trivial things that made the world feel lighter. Ni-Ki listened attentively, laughed softly at Sunghoon’s jokes, not expecting the omega to have a dad like sense of humor, and occasionally brushing their arms together stride, the contact subtle, but enough to make Sunghoon’s pulse quicken.

Meanwhile, Heeseung had finished practice in the music building and was heading back toward the café, hoping to catch Sunghoon before the weekend disappeared. From a distance, he noticed Sunghoon walking with that alpha again, close, comfortable, laughter shared easily between them. Something twisted in Heeseung’s chest, unfamiliar and unwelcome. Jealousy, sharp and sudden, flared, and for the first time he realized he might have underestimated his feelings for the omega.

Heeseung slowed, watching from a distance as Ni-Ki and Sunghoon shared a quiet moment, Ni-Ki’s hand briefly brushing against Sunghoon’s arm. It wasn’t aggressive, it wasn’t claiming, just a soft, attentive gesture and yet Heeseung felt the pang of discomfort like a twist in his stomach. He wanted to step forward, to reclaim some unspoken connection, but a part of him froze, realizing that Sunghoon’s attention that used to be focused on him was shifting, subtly but unmistakably.

Sunghoon, oblivious to the storm brewing behind the trees, continued to smile softly at Ni-Ki, the warmth of companionship easing the ache of heartbreak from before. For the first time in weeks, he felt truly seen not as a younger brother, not as someone to comfort, but as someone worth noticing.

As the afternoon turned into evening, the alpha offered to walk Sunghoon back to his dorm, a simple gesture, light and casual. The air between them was calm, gentle, yet charged with an unspoken tension that neither rushed nor forced. Sunghoon felt a flutter of nerves as they walked side by side, a soft brush of Ni-Ki’s hand near his, almost accidental, sending warmth up his arm and making his heart skip.

“You’re easy to be around,” Sunghoon admitted quietly, almost shyly, as they paused at the corner of his dorm building. “I… I like that, I’ve heard a lot about you before, and when you came into the café that day I didn’t know what to think or how to interact. I’m glad you stuck around for me to become comfortable.”

Ni-Ki smiled softly at the omega. “I like being around you too. You… make things feel lighter. I’m glad we met.”

Sunghoon’s chest warmed at the words. It stirred feelings that were new, exciting, and cautiously hopeful.

As Sunghoon waved goodbye and Ni-Ki disappeared down the path, the omega felt a mixture of relief, excitement, and curiosity. Heeseung’s face lingered in his mind, the warmth, the kindness and yet, the quiet attentiveness of Ni-Ki had opened a new door, one he hadn’t expected, one he was beginning to feel ready to explore.

Somewhere deep inside, Sunghoon realized that the weekend had shifted something undeniable within him. The gentle pull of Ni-Ki’s attention, the calm presence, and the soft energy of care had begun to reshape his heart, opening space for something new and potentially something lasting.
