Chapter 1: A Distorted Dream

Chapter Text

Swiftly and carefully navigating through the forest is harder when vampires are chasing you down. Even more so running uphill. What should've been a peaceful mining session turned out to become a hunt once Abolish dug himself to the surface. He held his ground for some time, but it was an unfair fight to begin with; two vampires versus one human. Dangerously close to death, his only option was to flee.

"Come back, you're only making this more painful!" Pyro called out strained but still playfully.

"Yeah, stop running! It's inevitable anyway," Scott added.

Abolish ignored them both and continued to traverse. Just a little more and the ground would get flatter, easier to run on. Even more and he'd get back to town, safe and sound. The vampires were close behind, even after being frozen from the holy word. He couldn't possibly do it again, not this quickly after doing it once.

He just had to keep moving forward, no matter what. Keep breathing. Keep focussed—

"Hi," Pyro, without warning, appeared next to him. He swiped his claws at Abolish, knocking him into a tree.

The human raised his shield the moment the vampire struck again and drew his sword to slash at Pyro, placing a gashing wound across his stomach. They stumbled back, holding the fresh wound with his arms.

The elder vampire, leaving no room for breathing, came in to attack. Abolish quickly shifted his shield to block the attempt aswell.

Scott lost his balance as the human shoved the vampire away with his shield, continuing to run away.

Keep gaining distance. Keep looking ahead. Abolish was getting so close to Oakhurst. So close to surviving. So close—

And yet the vampires would not lose him. With an inhuman lunge, they were already back on his tail.

Keep going. Keep going—

Scott transformed from a bat back to his regular form ahead of him, murderous glee plastered on his face and showing through his fangs.

"You can't escape," Scott taunted.

Abolish took an abrupt step back to avoid the vampire's claws, halting his momentum. No, he couldn't stop, not now. Not when he's so close.

Pyro caught up, still injured but healing quickly. The human swung at them again, striking his arm this time.

Scott landed a deadly scratch onto Abolish whilst he was turned away, to be met with another swing of the human's sword across his chest.

With both vampires hit, Abolish made a break for the path. He was almost there. He could see the town coming into view.

Keep going keep going keepgoingkeepgoingkeep—

From the trees, Pyro tackled Abolish to the ground. In an instant, the vampire sunk their teeth into Abolish, drinking a bit of his blood. Through sheer adrenaline, the human kicked him off, finding a wooden stake and drove it into Pyro.

Scott looked on as his fledging was reduced to ashes and Abolish scrambled to get back to town. The elder vampire did not make a move after the newly turned vampire. He didn't need to. He got what he wanted.

"Hello? Hello? Is there anyone…" Abolish called between breathy huffs.

He had returned to Oakhurst and for once, it was not empty.

"Abolish? Abolish! What in the world happened?!" Legundo ran over to him, arms outstretched.

Abolish collapsed right into the doctor's arms, "I got attacked by Scott and Pyro… I…"

"Goodness, Abolish, you need medical attention right now, you're bleeding. Here, let me help," Legundo quickly supported him and half walked, half carried Abolish over to his house. Once inside, he laid him onto the bed and got to work."So Scott and Pyro attacked you, can you give me more details?"

"I was finished mining, I went back up, accidentally found the two of them, we fought, but I couldn't… I ran, they… they almost killed me, and I… killed… Pyro," Abolish listed the events, but exhaustion was settling in.

"You killed Pyro?" The doctor asked, "Aren't vampires immortal? He can't have—"

"I got him with a stake."

Legundo went silent, ruminating over the implications. "Ah. Okay. We can talk about that later, where does it hurt?"

It was only then Abolish realised how painful everything was, "My arm, the right side of my back, uhm, Pyro bit me… somewhere before he died."

"Okay, let's clean and bandage you up first. Do you mind taking off your coat and vest?"

"It's fine." The doctor helped Abolish take off the top part of his suit. His coat was in tatters, the vampires had done a number on it, but at least his vest was fine. Finding another button up wouldn't be too difficult, probably. Legundo dabbed his wounds with alcohol and wound them up in bandages. The doctor paused before patching up his neck, but not for long.

"I'll give you something in the morning to help, but for now, have some rest."

"Thank you," Abolish shut his eyes, the weight of his eyelids finally winning out. Though it is not a peaceful rest.
