Monster March 2025 Day 2 Nymph
Wings Unlimited
The Q Word.
“It’s awfully quiet…” One of the new nursing students said before everyone stopped and turned to stare dangerously at the person who said it who suddenly felt like they just made an enemy out of everyone around them, no sooner had they uttered those words before there was an explosion felt just as much as it was heard and seen.
The larger people had set off fireworks.
Shit.
That meant for the Lilliputian Class of individuals, they could have multiple injuries and Dr. Felicity looked at the calandar and knew it wasn’t a holiday but who knew why the larger people set off those things. And suddenly their phones were ringing off the hook, all the amubulances were sent out and several more were coming in. Some of the lucky ones, having friends and family able to fly in the injured faster than their little vehicles could handle as suddenly all the rooms were suddenly full, every nurse having to weave through patients who were in several stages of injury, the most severe ones getting a room, the minor ones, getting a bed in the hallway.
“You just had to say the Q word.” Felicity growled dangerously as she helped patch up a minor injury before the EMT’s came rushing a patient in critical condition, burn marks all over them, already bleeding through the first set of bandages.
This poor soul looked like he was in the middle of it just as it went off.
“What do we got?” Dr. Felicity asked as she rushed over to the gurney where a Nymph was writhing in agony on it. Their wings already strapped down to keep them from tearing or damaging further as well.
“Very bad, 78% of their body is burned, 86% of their wings are blown off. All they have is what you see, we tried to salvage what we could, they’re bits of wing everywhere.” The EMT’s answered.
“We put a numbing agent in the jugum, so that at least they wouldn’t feel the pain of what’s missing in their wings.” The other offered.
“I can’t feel my wings!” The patient cried.
“That’s because I numbed them. You’re ok. You’re at the hospital and we’re preparing you for surgery, can you tell me what happened?” Dr. Felicity asked.
“I didn’t see it coming! I didn’t…I didn’t…” The patient could barely say the words as they fought shock before their body began to convulse and their eyes rolled back into their head.
“I need a crash cart! Code Blue!” Dr. Felicity hollered before she flew up and straddled her patient to begin giving CPR.
“What happened?” Felicity demanded of the EMT.
“There was a wedding that had fireworks and one of the secondary combustions set off right behind him. He really was just out for a night flight and a firework just up and fucked him right up.” The EMT’s managed to answer.
Felicity just growled in frustration as she fought to keep her new patient alive before she had to come off before they shocked him but he didn’t come back the first time so she was off doing a second set of compressions before the second shock brought him back which brought a breath of relief to everyone.
“Medbay 3 is opening up. Dr. Matthews is gonna do the surgery, she’s getting scrubbed up now as is her team.” A nurse offered as Felicity was using a penlight to make sure her patient’s pupils were still responsive.
“Good. I’m gonna get scrubbed up too and do what I can for these burns.” She insisted before she readily got scrubbed in and gowned up for surgery to help with these burns.
“The wings are too far gone, we’re gonna have to amputate them, the only salvageable parts of these wings are just the jugums, and even they’re damaged. They will most likely need wing augmentation.” Dr. Matthews assessed once the patient was moved, as once the wings were unbandaged it was clear that there was no attaching what had been blown off. There was only wounds to heal, bleeding to get under control and burns to treat as Dr. Felicity Andersn and Dr. Kate Matthews both worked tirelessly on this patient, a crash cart ever at the ready as Dr. Felicity did all she could to rebandage everything.
“They’re going to need major skin grafts too.” Felicity noted somberly.
“And a miracle to survive.” Kate answered.
“I thought I told my newbies about the Q word.” Felicity growled as she fought back tears.
“It’s a full moon too, so we were doubly fucked from the start.” Kate answered.
“I swear, you’d think the bigs would learn, to not fucking set off fireworks without warning everyone, of every kind and size!” Felicity snarled angrily.
“From what I’ve heard, the bigs got hurt too and their hospitals are just as full as ours are, so they got theirs too.” Kate tried to soothe.
“Look at him. He’s still so young, he had his whole life ahead of him and in one boom, it all got ripped away.” Felicity offered as she looked at the bandaged but young face of her patient.
“I’ve seen patients get through worse. All we can do is all we can do. That’s it.” Kate offered consolingly before they managed to get him patched up the best way they could before they sent him off the ICU for recovery and moved onto the next patient.
