Work Text:

**

There's a ring in his pocket and coffee for two
Got tickets for the Yankees at noon
Me oh my, not a cloud in the sky
I'm lovin' New York in June

--Helen Slater: "New York in June" (yes, that Helen Slater :=)

"It looks like a lovely day," Astra said suddenly "let's go out"

Alex blinked, looking up from her book to see that Astra was now standing by the window peering out at the city beyond. Getting up, Alex joined the older woman by the window, seeing that, yes, it really did look like a lovely day. A few clouds lazily drifted on by, blocking the sun, and it was relatively cool, with a gentle breeze.

"Wow, you're right," Alex agreed "it does look nice out there"

"So?" Astra looked at her eagerly.

"Hang on," Alex laughed "let me get dressed. Anything in particular you want to do?" she asked as she threw on some jeans and a good shirt.

"How about a picnic?" Astra suggested.

Packing some quick sandwiches and drinks, the pair swung by the deli nearby the apartment and bought some heartier sandwiches as well as some potato and macaroni salad before heading towards a nearby park. Finding a secluded little grove, they settled down, enjoying their food in companionable silence.

Finished with their food, Astra tugged Alex back, stretching out along the grass, tugging Alex to lay atop her, the agent absently twirling that one streak of white around her finger as they watched the clouds float on by.

"Bunny rabbit" Alex said suddenly, pointing.

Astra frowned, before nodding.

"Elephant" she said, pointing out another cloud.

"Nah, that's a giraffe," Alex objected "see? There's the neck, and those are the legs"

"No, that's definitely an elephant, dear"

"Whatever," Alex grumbled, wriggling to get a bit more comfortable (stupid lean muscular physique, no squishy bits to snuggle up with) "those sandwiches were good" she said suddenly.

"They were," Astra nodded "we should get some more on our way back"

"You're paying for them then," Alex snorted. She lazily stretched, idly toying with Astra's hair "how did we get here?" she mused.

"Do you mean in the wider, cosmic sense?"

"Yeah"

Astra shrugged. "I have no idea. Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? We're here now, we're happy, we're making a life together, why bother questioning it?"

"Fair enough," Alex conceded with a smile "Kara got us invitations to that big CatCo shindig next week"

"Yes, she told me," Astra nodded "want to go?"

"Not sure. Might be nice, but it'll also mean boring conversations and shoes that hurt my feet" Alex shrugged.

"What about my feet? No concern for them?" Astra teased.

"You're bulletproof, your feet'll be fine"

"Brat"

"Your brat"

Laughing, Astra tugged her closer, pressing a kiss to her cheek.

"Horse" she said suddenly, nodding up at the clouds.

"Hmm, good eye," Alex noted "hammer, and if you say otherwise, I'll hit you with it"

"So violent," Astra rolled her eyes "it's getting dark," she held a hand over her eyes "it looks like it might rain"

Alex twisted, peering up at the clouds. "Yeah...those definitely look like rain clouds"

"We'd better head home" Astra said, already sitting up and grabbing their things.

Hurrying to help her, Alex jumped as she felt a few, fat raindrops hit her skin, the other people enjoying the park also starting to hurry for their cars or other shelter. Finished with the last of their things, Astra suddenly scooped Alex up and sped them over to the car. By now the sky had darkened significantly, heavy, fat raindrops coming down at a steadily growing rate.

Getting into the car both more than a little wet, both women snorted and started giggling.

"That was unexpected" Alex laughed.

"But enjoyable in its own way" Astra grinned.

"Yeah" Alex grinned back, reaching out to gently cup Astra's face to pull her into a soft, intimate kiss. Breaking the kiss, she shivered "it's getting cold"

"I'll make us some hot chocolate when we get home" Astra promised as she started the car.

"Good," Alex nodded as she turned on the heater, reaching out to take Astra's hand, tangling their fingers together "I love you"

"I love you too"
