Chapter Text
His knuckles were white and hurt as he clenched fingers, Hizachi Midoriya was fuming, even if he felt guilty about it, he was painfully aware of how much of his rage was pointed inward, it was as if a part of his mind kept whispering that he was a failure greater than his own father, that he didn’t deserve to be angry in the name of his son for being away so much
But still it was hard to stand in front of this quirk counselor who thought he knew Izuku’s quirk better than the 17 year old boy, after all the work, he and his son had to get his late blooming quirk under control after it suddenly activated and proceeded to try to kill the teenager.
All the ice baths, the night sleeping in the cold rooms of restaurants that accepted his desperate pleas, to keep his son cold for a month, as the different aspects of his power slowly awakened.
“Just write what he told you, I am pretty sure he understands quirks better than you, and this one is his”.
He flinched at his one tone, the officer's voice cracking like a whip and echoing in the small office. Thankfully, it seemed that Izuku did not flinch.
Small mercies.
Father and son looked as the beginning doctor, wrote Reactor as the quirk’s name and signed the official paperwork, still grumbling about its description not being enough for such a late bloomer, how it needed to be studied, Hisachi did not trust himself to speak, well more specifically he did not trust himself to not burn the doctor if he opened his mouth, and only grunted as he got the documents from the desk.
As they left, they walked silently, the gears of both minds spinning at an ever faster rate as they planned all the changes in the life of the youngest Midoriya.
The youngest’s voice cracked, “ He-hey, Dad, you think that there will be a p-problem with me coming back to school?” Hisashi stopped and turned the boy
“Son, you are never going back to Aldera, me and Inko already got you transferred to another school, one that will not repeat the same mistakes and oversights, it is a bit further a way, but that is not going to be a problem, also if you would take your old man, I would like to help you train to to the tests, even if I disagree in you going to UA” he said with a small conspiratorial smile.
“I-it is the best hero track, dad, I know it is not your alma mater, but I will not be going in the support track…”
“Hupf. Still think you could pull the dual degree,” he said with a larger smile.
The boy still frowned, but his face was not as heavy with the storm of feelings as it was while they were inside the doctor’s office. “Maybe, I still don't want to put more on my plate than I actually can do, only to fail, also UA is closer than Senketsu.”
Izuku felt a hand fall hard on his shoulder; it sent his body into alert. It was hard to keep both his quirk and voice quiet, so an “eep” escaped his lips, but he managed to keep his quirk inactive, taking a few seconds to breathe before nodding for his father to continue.
“Son, I have failed you in many ways, one is that I have not said this enough: you can do anything and everything that you want you only need to desire, you are brilliant and determined and I could not be more proud of you, quirk or quirkless it never meant anything for me” Hisachi said, the sting of disappointment clear in his voice, his voice heavy with shame, the man prayed that his son did not think he was disappointed on him.
“D-dad, you are gre-eat, I never thought you were away because of that. I know how h-hard your work is. ok I will also apply to Senketsu, d-depending on the results, we will decide?” his son says, voice wavering and sight locked at his feet.
“No problem, my boy. Also, I will be able to stay in Japan until you take your tests, I already told the CEO, and he gave me the all clear. I want to help you train. We kept you from a lot of things, training that you are going to need. This ends now, and we also have to train your quirk.”
“W-what do you mean, you talked about helping before, are you gonna help me revise?” A tentative smile grew on his face, and his voice was clear with joy at the thought of spending more time with his father.
“Yes and no. Son I know you just managed to control of it, and you already are full of ideas but you quirk is complex and in the beginning of the month you were sleeping inside a freezer, for the insulation lucky for you your old man still has his quirk training license so we can do it in public, I also have some contacts we can use, the company, the squad, and… others, er.. from gramps… yeah I know, but hey there no need to look at me like that, those are the clean contacts that I got from Gramps,” he sight as his son’s accusatory eyes “Now boy we have one year to get you ready, you will be studying and in the afternoon we will train, quirk control, physical conditioning, hand to hand fighting”
“Ok, Dad, so I have some ideas, three or four things I already know I want to train with my quirk… and I would like to visit Gramps, and Grandma, they could give us some tips.”
“Oh, that is going to be great, I can already see the face of the old man when you ask him tips about how to be a good hero.”
“You say that, like Grandma is not going to literally monologue about how I would be better following the “family business“, and that I am ‘limiting’ myself by being a hero.”
“Boy, I am not going to speak ill of my mother-in-law; you will not take those words from my lips, that is something you probably should remember for your own safety. You are probably right, though.”
Father and son chuckled as they left the doctor’s office, both feeling lighter than when they entered that place, and certainly much lighter than after the visit they had when Izuku was four.
