Chapter 1: Notes

Chapter Text

She could pin point the exact moment when it finally dawned on her that she had feelings for Enid. It started how it always did with the blonde insisting they sit together on her bed so they could both see her laptop screen clearly and by the end of the movie she’d already start planning their next movie night while they got ready for bed.

This time was different though because halfway through the movie Enid had fallen asleep, she should’ve known by how quiet it had been, she felt her tired frame begin to lean into her and her head involuntarily rested on her shoulder.

She didn’t wake her up or push her away, instead she found herself staring at how peaceful she looked, admiring her beautiful face as the light from the screen illuminated her pale skin. She was close enough that she could feel her hair tickling her exposed neck as she nuzzled into her and she could smell the coconut scented shampoo she always used.

She quietly closed the laptop, putting it on her bedside table and wrapping an arm around the blonde to gently manoeuvre them until they were lying side by side. The sleeping girl making herself even more comfortable by cuddling more into her side, pulling her even closer than ever.

Her touch didn’t make her skin crawl like it did with everyone else’s. Her sweet scent didn’t make her gag or her nose scrunch in disgust. She never deterred her affection like she does with her friends and family, in fact she welcomed it even though she pretended not to enjoy it.

Safe to say she had gotten little to no sleep, her mind racing at the thought of her own heart betraying her because Enid had completely bulldozed through every wall she’d spent years building and there was nothing she could do about it.

The problem was that Enid had a boyfriend and she herself has no idea how to date or be a good partner for someone to be with.

“Enid wake up.” She sounded ridiculously soft as she spoke.

They were still cuddling, their legs intertwined and arms wrapped around each other, as tempting as it was to just lay with her the whole day she knew they needed to get up for classes.

Gently shaking her now, the werewolf groaned before letting out an adorable high pitched sound as she stretched.

Enid must have realised where she was and the position they were in because her blue eyes suddenly snapped open and she quickly sat up.

“Oh my god I fell asleep, I’m so sorry Wednesday.” Her roommate instantly apologising.

She just shook her head. “It’s fine Enid, I would’ve woken you if it bothered me so much.”

Suddenly the girl was laying on top of her again. “I knew you were a cuddler.”

She blushed as she groaned and pushed the blonde off to get up. “Don’t get used to it, it was a one time thing because I was too tired myself to kick you off my bed.”

“Mhm sure Wens.” Her roommate smirked.

“Just get ready, I don’t want to miss out on breakfast.” She huffed.

She didn’t want to act any different now because it would be unfair to stop being best friends with Enid just because of her unrequited feelings.

It still didn’t stop the pang in her chest as Ajax leaned down to kiss Enid as they sat down to eat. She’d always get a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach every time she witnessed any kind of affection displayed between the two, she always felt this inexplicable and irrational hurt but she now knew it was jealousy. It made sense now more than ever, she’d avoided feelings for so long she didn’t see the blatantly obvious pink pastel sign right in front of her.

“So, Addams.” Her thoughts interrupted by Bianca as she took the seat beside her. “Is there a reason you look more gloomy than usual?”

“If there was then I definitely wouldn’t be confiding in you.” She bit back.

“Okay somethings definitely up because you’re meaner than usual.” The siren replied back, unfazed by her words.

Enid’s hand reached across the table to place on her own. “Everything okay Wens?”

Her mind went blank as she flipped her hand over to hold hers, giving it a soft squeeze. “Yeah.”

She sounded so soft. The whole table turned quiet at their interaction and she quickly pulled out of her hold, clearing her throat to change the subject but she didn’t end up needing to because a guy suddenly appeared before the table.

“Hi, I’m Vince.” He awkwardly greeted everyone before staring directly at her. “Wednesday, I just wanted to see ask if you wanted to go out with me tonight, maybe to Jericho?”

“Why?” She asked, tilting her head in suspicion.

“Because I’ve sort of had a crush on you for a while now and I just wanted to see if I could get a date?” He rambled nervously fast as he awkwardly rubbed his arm, aware of the audience watching him. “Just one date, no strings attached and you can even leave whenever you want.”

She thought about it for a good minute while he shuffled awkwardly where he stood before deciding to say yes. She needed to analyse and write down how everything goes to see if dating is something she’d be interested in, or if she’d actually be a good partner if it works out.

She knew not to get her hopes up about things changing with Enid but there was a chance in the future she’d have to move on from her unrequited feelings, she didn’t want to end up alone but the thought of spending the rest of her life with someone other than the werewolf made her chest hurt. She needed to push through the ache in order to move on and she also needed get used to the idea of being with somebody else and what better way to do so than with exposure therapy.

Her response was firm and came with zero interest or excitement. “Fine but I’m going to be taking notes down and analysing everything, so make it worth while.”

“Yes!” He excitedly exclaimed before pausing. “Wait, analysing what exactly?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.” She waved off. “Pick me up at my dorm at 6. Don’t be late.”

And with that the bell rang and she stood up and began walking to her class, not even bothering to say bye to anybody as she avoided eye contact.

“Oh ok see you then!” Vince yelled out to her but she just ignored him.

Thankfully she didn’t have Enid in any of her classes today, she wasn’t in the mood to listen to hear squeal excitedly about her date. Enid would probably chat nonstop about what to wear and how she’d do her makeup or whatever else the blonde would force her to endure later when they got back to their dorm.

°°°

She was wrong.

She expected Enid to talk her ear off about the date with her usual up beat excited self but instead she’s met with protests and a lot of questions.

“Are you sure you want to do this Wens?” Her roommate asked for the fiftieth time, following her around the room as she got ready to go out. “You don’t even know this guy, maybe I should come with you, just in case.”

“There is no need Enid” She sighed. “I have my knives if he tries anything, plus aren’t you suppose to be having a girl’s night with the leech and the two fish.”

“I don’t know Wens.” The blonde mumbled nervously. “I might just stay in, just in case you need me.”

Turning around with a sigh, she reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to do that Enid, I’ll be fine. I’ll even take my phone with me if you want and you’ll be the first person I’ll call if anything happens.”

“Promise?” The way Enid was looking at her with her bright blue eyes made her want to surrender to her every whim.

“I promise.” She spoke softly, tucking a strand of the short blonde hair behind her ear.

They silently stared at each other, the tension thick as Enid leaned into her touch, her breath hitching when she stepped closer.

“Wednesday.” The werewolf sounded breathless as she whispered her name.

“Enid I–“ Her words were interrupted by a knock on the door.

“I should go.” Their moment shattered as she cleared her throat and took a step back. “That’s probably him.”

“Okay.” The blonde’s smile not quite reaching her eyes as she sat down at her desk.

Maybe she had overstepped, she didn’t like how sad she looked at that moment. She wanted to make it right, to make sure everything was alright between them but another persistent knock pulled her attention away.

Growling she stomped towards the door, aggressively ripping it open.

“Let’s go then since you seem so impatient.” She snapped, refusing to look back to make sure he followed.

She groaned to herself as he rushed to walk beside her. This was going to be a long night.

°°°

To her surprise the date wasn’t that bad but she knew it would just be a one time thing for her.

“Thank you for dinner.” She said awkwardly clearing her throat in discomfort. “But I…”

She hesitated which is unusual for her because she usually enjoyed being the bearer of bad news but Vince was kind and he had actually shown genuine interest in her. She’d written down a page worth of everything he did right during dinner, he’d actually laughed when she pulled it of her bag but she couldn’t lie to herself anymore and there was no denying that boys just didn’t do it for her.

“I understand.” He smiled at her. “Like I said, no strings attached. Thanks for giving me a chance though.”

She stared at him before nodding. His kindness was still showing regardless of her rejection and she knew she wasn’t the most normal date he’d had but he didn’t make her feel weird about the notes. She’d feel selfish leading him on when she clearly didn’t feel the same attraction he did for her.

“Thanks for understanding.” She said, avoiding eye contact now.

She’d expected the walk back to school to be awkward afterwards but he remained friendly and filled the space with conversation for the both of them.

What she wasn’t expecting to see was Enid waiting by the gates when they finally reached Nevermore.

“Enid?” She asked in disbelief. “What are you doing here?”

“Oh um, I was just taking a break from my night stroll.” The blonde blushed, trying to play it cool.

Her eyes narrowed. “Right, and what happened to your girl’s night?”

“I uh left early, I needed a breather.” Enid sounded exactly like a person making up excuses after being caught.

They stared at each other for a couple of seconds before Vince cleared his throat. “Do you still want me to walk you back to your room?”

“No it’s okay go ahead, thank you again.” She said, not taking her eyes off Enid.

“Okay see you around.” He smiled before walking away, shaking his head as he laughed to himself.

“Okay talk Enid, why were you really out here.” She demanded.

The blonde sighed in defeat before quietly speaking. “I was waiting for you.”

She wanted to lecture her about her actions and that she didn’t need her overprotectiveness but she’d be lying. She loved it because she’d be doing the same for Enid if she went out with someone she didn’t know. It’s hard to be mad at someone who does things with only good intentions in mind.

Groaning she grabbed her hand before pulling her towards the building. They said nothing as they walked hand in hand back to their room, not once letting go of each other until they reached the door.

Reluctantly pulling away she unlocked it and ushered her inside.

“Thanks for making sure I got back safe Enid.” She said as she began to undo her braids and unbutton her shirt.

She frowned after a few seconds of silence before turning to see if Enid had heard her. She was met a pair of wide blue eyes looking at her in panic, her jaw dropped that she could see her fangs.

She then realised how she looked, she’d never undone her braids in front of anybody before but if there was a person she’d let her guard down with then she’s grateful it’s Enid.

“You look beautiful.” A breathless whisper coming from the werewolf.

Blushing she quickly turned back around to her closet to grab her clothes for sleep before rushing past her to the bathroom.

When she was finally done and ready for bed, she was surprised to Enid sitting on her black sheets. Her heart twisted with the way she was looking at her as she moved closer.

“Don’t you have your own bed.” She huffed as she stood in front of her.

“I want to stay with you.” The blonde whined, reaching for her waist and hugging her close, forcing her to stand between her knees.

Her breath hitched Enid pressed her face gently into her chest before looking up with puppy dog eyes. “Please.”

Her body was moving before she could stop herself. Her hands lifted up to place them on either side of her jaw, running her thumb on her soft skin before nodding.

They stayed like that just staring at each other before Enid finally shifted backwards to lie down, patting the spot beside her for her to do the same.

“You know I’m surprised you haven’t asked about how my date went.” She said, laying her head on the werewolf’s shoulder as they cuddled.

“I don’t want to talk about him.” Enid growled before nuzzling into her hair. “At least not for tonight. I just want to be with you.”

Her words caused her shiver, nodding she turned the lamp off, letting sleep consume her as Enid gently played with her hair.
