Work Text:
The times Chuuya ever got to feel like a sixteen year old were scarce. He'd gotten used to being exposed to such a mature environment in the mafia to the point he couldn't even grasp the fact of being a teen. He even felt too childish while watching the fireworks in the sky.
The loud explosions made his ears ring, even began to give him a small headache. But their beauty was worth watching. He didn't have many opportunities to appreciate the fireworks, neither to enjoy being a teenager.
He rested against the dock's railing, his eyes glowing in sync with the many explosions of color.
"I would've never thought I'd find you watching the fireworks, Chuuya."
Of course his peace just had to be interrupted.
Chuuya wouldn't have minded if it was anybody else, but out of anyone else, it had to be Dazai the one to find him enjoying himself. He didn't hate the other, despised him was a far better word than hatred.
Chuuya remained quiet, ignoring the other's presence.
The brunet made his way next to Chuuya's, his face reflecting the many colors in the sky. There was a newfound peace in Dazai's presence that Chuuya managed to catch with his peripheral vision. An odd sight considering that he constantly found many creative ways to infuriate Chuuya.
So to hear no teasing or provoking words come out of his mind weirded the hell out of Chuuya. But was he going to question what was up with this sudden truce and incite Dazai to begin clowning around? Or was he just going to remain silent and make the most out of his weird co-worker? The second option was by far, the most appealing one to him.
The fireworks continued in their silence for many minutes, until the sky went dark.
"So beautiful, wasn't it?" Dazai was the first to speak again.
"I'm surprised you didn't even say anything stupid." Chuuya thought of leaving right after he said that, but his body remained against the railing.
"Ow, is that how you greet me after being gone for three days? How heartless you are Chuuya!" Chuuya rolled his eyes at Dazai's dramatic antics.
"I'm getting used to you just leaving out of nowhere that I even started hoping you wouldn't come back." Despite his harsh words, a small smile tugged at his lips.
Dazai had no sense of urgency whatsoever, he was extremely irresponsible with his work and would just randomly disappear for days without even saying a word. The first time it'd happen, Chuuya had been so worried—considering Dazai's suicidal tendencies—that he'd seriously punched Dazai whenever he reappeared at the mafia.
Now its just an "Oh you're back" whenever Dazai returned from his depressive episodes. At least, that was what Chuuya thought they were.
"So sad! I was about to make your wish come true and died."
If Chuuya had learned something from working these two years with Dazai was that whenever he lied, he made sure to make eye contact (an inverted body psychology to better up his manipulative tactics).
Dazai's eyes remained glued to the dark night sky instead of meeting with Chuuya's eyes.
Chuuya's smile dissipated.
"You know I trust you, don't you?" Chuuya's voice was quieter than usual, the constant clashing of the waves against the shore made his voice even quieter.
"A good dog always trusts his owner, Chuuya—"
"That's not—do you trust me back?" Dazai's facade seemed to drop for a moment at the way Chuuya strained his voice. His silence was more than enough to prove Chuuya's point.
There was no mutual trust.
He huffed, knowingly. He should've known better than to ask Dazai if he trusted him back. Of course he wouldn't, all he did was think of himself.
"If you were to sink down—" Dazai spoke before Chuuya could turn and leave. He could feel those damn blue eys piercing through his skin with such an intensity that it burned—"Ill swim down with you."
Chuuya furrowed his eyebrows together. His incredibility remained strong.
"Would you?" Chuuya knew Dazai far too well to know that he wouldn't. That the way Dazai derivately avoided his eyes was him fortifying that damn wall that he hid in so much. "Yeah, that's what I thought."
Stop me, prove me wrong, say something so that I don't go. Yet Dazai remained quiet, and Chuuya had no other reason to stay.
