Speculation on Trion Bodies and the Hobbies of Border Agents

Summary:

There's a lot of sci-fi stuff that goes insufficiently explained or explored in World Trigger, and trion bodies are one of them. Are there trion body model artists? What's the texture of the gray, metallic cross-section of someone's arm? How would trion body sex work, if it did? On a related note, who can access training room cameras at each base? These are not the subject of this work, but these are the sorts of things this work covers.

Work Text:

Trion bodies have a unique property in that they can be modelled whichever way one wishes. While it's no longer common for agents to create major physiological modifications due to difficulties adjusting between bodies, some retain minor changes, such as Konami's hair and Hyuse's horns. Osamu also suspects that some agents really do change the physiology of their trion bodies, but his observations have been inconclusive and he's yet to find an appropriate occasion to ask.

More intriguing is the sensation of pain in trion bodies, which can be dialed according to preference. Minor injuries are said to feel the same while major injuries are significantly dulled, though some prefer to dial sensations higher or lower than prescribed settings. Kuga himself switches between completely accurate sensitivity and dulled senses when practicing, for the novelty. Some agents also raise sensitivity on specific parts of the trion body, claiming that it allows them to sense nearby agents or even snipers. Usami's suggestion was ultimately to go with what's most comfortable.

Osamu took note again of the difference in adjustment between minor and major injuries after the Second Large-Scale Invasion. The sensation of being impaled didn't seem comparable to having one's trios system supply destroyed, however, since he was riding the adrenaline rush when it happened. Causing oneself a traumatic injury in real life for testing alone also wouldn't be of much use.

Trion bodies are, unfortunately, not the most analogous to real-life bodies, and hence most agents end the study of trion body physiology at knowing the location of the trion supply system and central processing system. Senses seem to transfer but the sense of pain can be altered and physiological characteristics may be altered - that is all one needs to know as an agent.

Select agents have been very interested in the use of trion bodies, however. Nasu takes great advantage of flight and the freedom of movement her trion body allows her, making her movement something of an anomaly within Border's body of physically active agents. It's worth investigating if Nasu was influenced by Kako's style of movement, or even requested her mentorship directly. Kuga, recognizing the worth of Border systems for low-stakes, high-efficiency training, tests out various trion body settings in practice matches, sometimes employing these unusual tactics to score some wins against Murakami.

Trion body gore is a lesser-explored area. Even the horror movie fans among agents haven't hit on the dissection of trion bodies as a possible interest, largely because the quick loss of trion would soon lead to a bail-out in normal conditions. Training rooms can be set to allow continued training until someone voluntarily bails-out, however, which has led to some more agents getting to know each other more in-depth. Jin and Tachikawa are much worse than other agents engaging in this recreational activity because instead of locking their sessions for entry, their regular competition can devolve into slicing each other open until neither can jump from a Grasshopper or hold onto an Attacker Trigger. Considering the properties of the Scorpion and Tachikawa's penchant for imitating Zoro from One Piece in desperate times, a stalemate is rather extreme. Kazama, Arashiyama, and Ikoma have all borne witness, as well as Ikoma squad by proxy. Ikoma squad has also since taken a rotation of being asked by Ikoma to pretty please with all the cherries or spring rolls or shoji games you could ever want on top cut him open. Or let him cut you open. Both are good.

The more depressing possibility associated with trion bodies is that agents can modify their trion bodies to look like others, often times loved ones they've lost. If you're sufficiently close with someone, you could even ask them to play dress-up for a hug-and-cry session. Therapists are available at Border, but the higher an agent's rank is, the less likely it is that they opt for it, and anyone aware that they can request private training room sessions with all the breakdowns and no lasting evidence is even less likely to seek therapy. Such is the situation one could find themselves in as a Border agent.

Wrote this while not doing much of anything, but have been thinking about these things for a while. Very into World Trigger. Might write actually character-centered works someday.
