Work Text:

The stone beneath your shoes was slick & damp, tracked in from the storm outside.

It shimmered faintly - like centuries of forgotten spells had left a residue, or the moon itself had spilled its dust here.⋆。°✩ ⋆⁺。˚⋆˙‧₊

First-years fidgeted in crooked lines, their black robes too large, nerves too raw. You still remembered that feeling, even though you were many years older now. Little, old you.

The Sorting Hat yawned atop its stool - wrinkled like old skin, its voice worn & brittle, like an ancient parchment speaking. Snape loomed at the staff table, still & imposing as the moon; perhaps it was his dust beneath your feet.  Torchlight kissed his robes, turning raw black to dusty plum. He barely blinked, as if casting a silent spell over the room. When the Hat declared "Ravenclaw", the Hall erupted in applause. Snape's eyes flicked-once, maybe twice-toward where you stood. You knew you hadn't imagined it. He was discreet, but everything about him burned beneath your ribs, crawling benenath your skin; waking an appetite. He was both transparent & mysterious, familiar yet endlessly frustrating.

Lightning cracked against the ceiling & you felt seen - never gently, of course. When is being perceived ever gentle?

Hogwarts had changed over the years & Snape tracked every subtle shift. You were part of an adult trial program, designed for those whose schooling had been shattered or never truly begun. Discreet, invitation-only. No house affiliations, no feasts in your honor-just a schedule you disliked but endured for the sake of education, a wand & the castle itself, extraordinary & wary of newcomers.

You guessed, it made a strange kind of sense, in this new era stitched from ashes & aftermath - where war had fractured more than structure & time had sobered the once-sweet, lovely ideals of youth. The adult trial program was a scar born of reform: Hogwarts opening its ribs to the left-behinds, the survivors, the never-picked. Not charity-penance.

Severus Snape, who should've been another ghost by now, was not only alive but essential to its quiet machinery. He was always essential, that one. He'd helped build this & his redemption, brick by brick, as if atoning not just for his own sins, but for the system that had failed so many. He was the architect of second chances.

& here you were, not to relive youth. You were here to reclaim what had been withheld. Angry, hungry, wary - & Snape knew it. You couldn't tell if he intended to make it easier or harder for you.

You stayed behind after the lecture. The once-clattering classroom had emptied, its usual noise trailing off into welcoming corridors. The torches along the stone walls had burned low, their flames casting protracted, tired shadows across the desks. The air held the faint scent of chalk dust & old paper - slow, expectant. There was no atmosphere like this anywhere outside Hogwarts. You felt lonely, but weirdly content.

Beyond the thick walls, a solitary owl called in the distance. Before this place, you weren't even sure you'd seen an owl. Now, they seemed stitched into the fabric of everything. Wise & free. Your breath slowed, but your heart tightened. You folded your arms loosely - an instinctive, comforting motion - fingers tracing the worn edge of your notebook, drawing quiet focus from its frayed, yellowing pages. The air tasted faintly of metal, that endless, unfolding magic you now recognized. Cold from the floor reached through your shoes & into your bones. Emotion, it seemed, was not just a matter of thought, but of marrow.

Heat flickered to your left. Chill seeped up from below. You sat between them. The pressure of a thousand questions & desperate answers sat in your chest like sealed, thick glass starting to crack. You kept your eyes on the fire.

"Magic is an extension of the self, you said. But it goes against the self when emotions cloud judgment. Aren't those emotions also part of the self?" Your voice was soft but pointed, spoken into the fire as if it might answer first, beating his coldness.

Snape's gaze flickered, intrigued despite himself. He didn't turn fully toward you, but the subtle tilt of his head - like adjusting to a more expressive angle- betrayed his attention. Raven robes drew tight at his shoulders, as if his body, too, refused to soften. The firelight caught the edge of his cheekbone, carving alluring shadows across a face that had forgotten youth long before it was meant to.

"The self is fractured," he said, voice low, clipped, each word shaped like a blade meant to be a warning. "Emotion often distorts clarity. It doesn't negate magic, but corrupts its precision." His tone held no condescension, only the cool finality of someone who had lived inside the logic he spoke- not theorized it; endured it.

"The 'self' we are trying to channel isn't singular, we know that. It's a battleground, & we train inside it. No rest."

You offered restraint that didn't soothe. Your voice didn't shake, though every part of you wanted to cause an earthquake. The words came evenly, yet your jaw tightened to hold them in place, like a dam against something unnameable pressing hard; a chronic flood. You didn't move, yet your stillness screamed into voids that gave no answer.

Snape didn't speak immediately. His smirk came first—slow, shaped not by amusement but recognition. It wasn't a celebrating expression; it was well-known darkness. He saw it. He felt it. The ancient fracture inside you that matched his own.

"Precisely, Miss Y/N. Mastery is less about power... more about control of what lies beneath, not above."

The measured cadence of his voice shifted - less detached now. Just slightly off-beat. Like he wasn't speaking at you anymore, but with you.

You turned to face him fully. "Isn't control a form of power?"

He opened his mouth to respond but stopped - just long enough to reveal that your question had found something. Maybe it undressed his sense of power. When he answered, it came slower.

"Sometimes," he said, "control resists power."

"& it uses power to achieve it," you countered. "Powers colliding with each other. Even our tools are in a battleground."

He looked at you then, really looked, as if trying to map your brain. "Mm," he muttered, absorbing your every mannerism. "You save the best parts for when the rest leave. Are you trying to keep my attention solely on you?"

You smiled awkwardly but knowingly, caught inside your doubt. "If I don't, who will? You seem otherwise preoccupied with ghosts only you can see."

A flicker of something -respect?- passed through his eyes.

"Oh, ghosts aren't distractions," he admitted, voice more strict. "They're reliable. They speak when nothing else dares to."

You tilted your head, unblinking. "Yeeeah. I suppose they do. & they listen because they're yours."

"No," he replied, almost absently. "They listen because they have nowhere else to go. Like echoes sealed. Doomed."

"Is that you? Sealed & doomed? Here you are - haunted & haunting." You leaned closer, lowering your voice. You don't know what has gotten into you, but you're growing bolder. "Does mastery mean to never lose, or to learn how to lose with intent?"

He paused, the air thickening. He's almost shocked. "To lose with intent…? That suggests surrender."

"Or eventual strategy. Sometimes, conceding a piece is how you win the board. We need to learn how to sacrifice. What to sacrifice."

Snape's fingers tapped against the wood, a quiet, deliberate rhythm. His pale hands held your gaze with an intensity that felt endless.

"A game forced upon us, then," he said quietly, voice low, still edged with challenge. "Every move risks revealing what you guard most fiercely. Your weakness becomes the opening."

"Yes. Or the mirror," you replied, a soft, excited smile playing at your lips. "Sometimes losing your usual self is how you find your truer self."

His fingers stilled on the wood. "Dangerous words," he murmured, voice low & rough.

"What if surrendering control is the only way we'll ever find something worth holding onto?"

"Oh?" He now approaches you slowly, his aura admonishing you. "Few have the courage to be the arsonist & the architect at once."

He leaned in just enough for his breath to stir the air between you.

"But perhaps," he whispered, "the fire is less about destruction & more about illumination. Don't we all crave to reveal ourselves whole? Bare?"

The room shrank around you both, tension folding into something fragile. Thinner than glass, thicker than air.

You craved to break apart, to unravel everything carefully stitched between you. To just be; explode like a dying star bursting with new life. But neither dared-yet.

He studied you for a long, agonizing moment.

"Silly girl... Haven't you paid attention? Control isn't just a tactic. It's a defense. An important one, at that. Every time I let go, I lose something I can't get back."

You swallowed the quick surge of something fierce inside. "What if losing is the only way to stop carrying the weight? What if holding on is the real weakness sometimes?"

Snape's laugh was short, bitter. "We need walls. Walls so high that no one can see the cracks. The faults."

"Walls trap you, professor," you said, stepping closer. "Cracks allow light to get in."

Ironically, his eyes darkened now. "Light burns as much as it reveals."

"Stop fearing the burn." You paused, voice trembling with honesty you weren't ready to own.

He looked away, voice dropping to a near whisper.

"Falling apart… I've done it more times than I can count. Every time, I told myself it was for control, for survival." He now sounded desperate. "Maybe we need to stop pretending control is the whole story."

"Maybe that's a lesson you haven't learned yet."

Snape's breath hitched, eyes locking onto yours like a tether in the dark. Like he was your student for a second. "You want to lose control with me."

You smiled, raw & a little reckless. "I want us both to stop pretending we have it inside our cages."

For a heartbeat, the world fell away. Zero masks, zero shields; just 2 fractured hearts screaming to be heard. And in that moment, both your insides roared, the space between you shrinking until the cold of the stone walls faded beneath the heat rising between your breaths.

"Control does feel like a cage tonight," he said, mouth slightly open, as if expecting you to speak your answers into it.

You reached out, fingertips grazing the sharp line of his jaw, tracing like you could map the years of restraint held there. "Cages are meant to be broken. No matter the night."

"You speak like you want us to tear each other apart."

"Maybe I do," you whispered, the challenge naked now. "Not to destroy. To free."

His hand covered yours, fingers curling not to pull away, but to hold. "That blasted freedom… it tastes of surrender."

"I know. That's not bad."

The heat in his gaze deepened, shadows pooling there. What an abyss he was. "I might need to feel alive." His lips brushed your temple, voice a dark vow. "I might need to let the walls crumble. I need it. I need it for so long now..."

Logic & fire tangled. You 2 were going too far. Fingers met again, hesitant at first, like testing a fault line, searching for where allowance gave way. His touch traced the curve of your wrist as if memorizing a language written in bone, muscle & skin. You felt the excruciating heat beneath his cold exterior, a pulse that thrummed against your own. Everything was externalizing - you felt the magical universe within your blood.

His palm pressed flat, grounding you, while the tips of his fingers splayed lightly, catching the barest tremor running through your arm. Nothing escaped him. The contact was electric, warming your frozen earth: your survival logic. You were surrendering to the safest danger.

So you slid your hand upward, brushing over the ridge of his forearm, where muscle tightened under the skin, so taut & subdued. He inhaled sharply when your thumb brushed the faint scar along his wrist, a touch raw with history neither of you needed to name. Your senses did the talking now.

In that space, all that was careful & restrained frayed & fell away, leaving only 2 bodies learning the language of release. With their insides out.

His hand ascended, a talented cartographer of your shape - charting the unseen borders where you emerged. The only pressure you ever enjoyed. You leaned in slightly. Your forehead hovered near the side of his face, your breath stirring against his existence. You felt him swallow. Your fingertips found the edge of his collar, brushing the fabric, pausing at the place where linen met skin. You lingered there. His throat tightened subtly beneath your touch he was starving for, every breath between you becoming heavier.

His other hand rose to your back, gliding upward with a patience that felt like reverence. He wasn't rushing; he was reading. You. The moment. Himself. But there were no words anymore, only presence & proximity. 2 forms drawn to the edge of something vast - not falling, not fleeing, only holding the weight of a shared gravity.

The room didn't shrink. It deepened.

He spoke with a fierce urgency, voice low & commanding: "Release it. Now. Before it poisons what's left between us."

Cheers to release xx
