From the moment we were born

Work Text:

The twins of the house of Feanor were unique from the moment they were born. Possessing the same face, the same mood, and that gorgeous copper hair inherited from their mother that even their close relatives sometimes hardly could differentiate which one was who.

They were twin and twins were meant to be together.

Two new servants would come today to serve Prince Amrod and Amras, sons of Crown Prince Feanor. Great surprise they experienced when they just started to serve their new lords. “Have your Highnesses often preferred to be in each other company that much?” Asked the dark-haired Noldor servant, one of the two who had just been appointed to this position of close maids in serving daily tasks for the princes. Tilting her head gracefully to her right to query her fellow senior servant about her puzzled experience with her princes.

“Yes, indeed. Since their birth, our princes have been significantly affectionate and accompany each other at every moment. Our highnesses even prefer their two beds next to each other in their chamber. It has been this lovely since they were just newborns, until elflings, and until now.” The maid was rambling with thoughts about the two princes when she was asked about them. This lady servant must have served the Feanorian house, especially the two youngest of the house since they were born. The newcomer lady servant was surprised by just how passionate her senior servant talked about Amros and Amras.

“Oh Eru, it is so? Their mother, Lady Nerdanel, must be so proud and reassured. Young elves of their age seem still young and there are often some petty rivalries between siblings. But our graceful and harmonious lords are, on the contrary, I suppose so.” She chucked a bit at the scene of the twin brothers who were standing closely together and chatting. The hand of the red-haired elf standing on the left rested on the shoulder of the other elf. Too similar they were that the new servants, two lady maids, could not tell apart the two of them on their first days here. One of the lady elves, one hand covered her mouth elegantly to muffle her giggle at the lovely expression of closeness and affection of Ambarussa.

They were always together and in close company with each other.

It was not an official rule or any hidden compulsory implying thing but it was rather a thing that everybody should instinctively grasp: Invite both of them at once when there are events or hunting in the wild. It was not that the princes would express any grumpiness or bad temperament when you invited one of them separately to a hangout. Amrod or Amras, both would still be willing to socialize with their noble friends with gentle and polite manners acquired from their mother, luckily. With the so noble and gracious ladies, politeness and gentleness are always their most striking manners.

Not entirely relevant to the topic but the twins have more of their mother’s temperament than their three middle older brothers Celegorm, Carnistir, and Curufin.

Back to the topic, our twin lords, however, likely prefer the invitation to be towards both of them at once. They possessed no characters such that they would blurt out or straightforwardly announce that either both of them to go together, or no one would come. It has always been a graceful and hidden way of expressing their inner wishes, belonging only to twins, that people are aware of. (Rather than them speaking out, it had been observations that the noble lords and ladies obtained themselves every time they would like to reach out to the youngest sons of the infamous prideful Fëanáro to social events. The observations were that,) Their faces would be in the brightest expression and hang the widest smiles as the other elves could observe if they were invited together at once. Oh, our lords have always been polite and sociable to any of the elves approaching them, it was just that all of which they expressed to the public was a result of royal etiques, rather than their natural and comfortable selves. A noticeable difference in the twins’ way of expressing themselves could be noted when there were just their close ones like their five older brothers and their parents and some close-bond relatives. But this story is a whole different story that will be saved for later.

There was a tea party and hunt hosted by a noble in Tirion.

At the hunting ground next to the garden for tea time, Amrod was already there. Along with two of his brothers, Tyelko and Curufin, and cousins from the houses of Nolofinwe and Arafinwe.

Amras would come quite a while later, so the older twin brother was left on his own, with his cousins and the guests - quite many lords and ladies.

His fair-haired older brother teased him: “Are you feeling lonely, dear brother, as your beloved twin is not here?”

His older brother chuckled lightly and continued the joke by adding a few more sentences to the conversation. It was Tyelko, accompanied by Curufin, of course, starting the joke toward his younger sibling.

“yes, obviously. Why is the matter that I am waiting for Amras so entertaining to you, brother mine? I suppose you can do something else more fun with Curvo rather than standing here with a boring younger sibling like me.” Surely Amrod retorted with his calm voice but not with a calm face. His eyebrows furrowed lightly and his lips curved into a gentle yet sarcastic smile toward his third elder brother.

Most of the time when these jokes and teasing tones came into conversations, they were merely the older brothers’ distinct ways of showing care and attention to their siblings - at least that's what naughty Tyelkormo has declared to his brothers. Amrod, along with Curvo and their cousins, clearly knew he was just messing around with his harmless jokes so he took no offence from the joke. However, that did not mean he had not felt annoyed with his troublesome and chaotic brothers.

There was not anything strange about this daily petty sibling jokes to anyone there. Findaráto, or Finrod, stepped in between the two Feanorian brothers in an attempt to stop the escalating jokes. “Oh Eru, you two, how adorable you are to converse comfortably with each other like this but you can save this later for when we already return to the castle. Now many guests we still have here, waiting to greet their princes and start the tea party and later the hunt of the day.” Said so that he could ease the argument a bit and temporarily stop their long, “loving”, lingering eye stares at each other.

Curvo, who is always in the presence of Tyelko and vice versa, could not stand his closest beloved brother being reminded by their cousins and could not indulge his closest brother messing around inappropriately, intervened. “Let’s go, brothers, especially you Tyelko. We still have guests here. And thank you, cousin, I believe my brothers were just enjoying the presence of each other a bit. Need not for your attention.” To Curufin, this was merely his polite, prideful, and defensive response to Findaráto. Nevertheless, to the siblings’ and cousins’ elf ears there, it might sound quite aggressive and disagreeable with his low and prideful tone, like his famous Father Feanáro.

“Haha, my fault, dear cousin. Hope you don't mind. And Curvo, dear brother of Mine, let's go and enjoy today's party with big brother, eh? These elves, I know, are just boring and unattractive to you, my smart smith.” Tyelkormo smirked naughtily toward his golden-haired cousin to apologise for the noisy display between him and Amrod.

At the party, Tyelko, Curvo, Findaráto, Aredhel, Angrod, and Amrod were chatting with the noble ladies and lords while waiting for Amras to arrive.

Amrod, just like others, engaged in lively conversations, was once every minute directing his eyes to the side direction, where the entrance hall was. He had done this in a guarded and cautious way to not let others know he was quite not interested in conversing with them.

Amrod was a tall and handsome young elf, with gentle beauty and copper hair like his mother, with pride and nobility like his father. These things combined would be more than enough that all young maiden elves there were naturally attractive to him, even though he was rather young in elf age to have any love interest.

The groups there agreed to hold a contest in which all young male elves would ride into the woods and look for the most beautiful flowers for the ladies. With no choice but not to refuse, the older twin joined the contest upon requests from other elves.

The flower hunt was held while waiting for more elves to come and start the primary purpose of today’s gathering: The hunt. The rules are that you must form a group of 2 to 4 to be able to join in. Amrod chose to form a group with Finrod and Angrod. Aredhel surely ran to her favourite cousin Tyelko, along with Curufin, to be in the same group with them.

The flower hunt went smoothly. The two golden-haired elves joining along with Amrod could detect his longing for someone who everyone there knew. The two cousins pressed their lips together to try not to chuckle out loud, showing their amusement at his unwitting loveliness. The twin was younger than them so from the nature of the hearts’ of older brothers, they could not stand this cuteness of the easily seen-through emotion of the copper-haired elf. The standard polite smile was still hung on his fair face but were you to examine closely his eyes and eyebrows, you would see somewhat a discreet anticipation and excitement.

Pityo’s team won as they were the first team to bring the most beautiful flowers back to the ladies, while he was surrounded by other elves, a stealthy figure approached him and booed, a strong arm hung around his neck and “Surpriseeee~”. The expected person finally arrived. “Good day, brother, forgive me. The business took a longer time than I expected. And I could not leave our mother with such many tasks.” Amras apologized to his twin even though he had already announced his late coming.

“Oh really? Are you sincere with your apology?” He replied with the mock sulkiness of an elfling, lacing his words with playful banter towards his cherished twin. Telvo knew too well the joking intention lying under his accusation, he just smiled playfully and did not retort.

Hints of youthfulness and playfulness of a young elf still shone in Telvo’s eyes, the same pair that his twin Pityo possessed, and also some of his brothers, probably, whose temperaments resemble their gentle and calm mother. The gentle smile lingered on his fair face as if a reflection of his mother shone exquisitely through him, or his twin sibling as well. Yet traces of their father were unmistakable there too, woven into both their appearance and temperament. Oh, the two brothers, born of the same twin birth, had gathered, and with them came quite some confusion. Unless you looked at them closely and knew them well, it had been sometimes a genuine challenge to tell them apart. And poor some lords and ladies, a few of them did not know the youngest ones of the house of Feanor quite well.

“Welcome, cousin. I suggest you and your brothers prepare quickly to join the hunt, otherwise, Angrod, who has been quite impatient, would ruthlessly drag you straight onto the horse.” Finrod chuckled and seemed to be rather delighted. A gentle smile and graceful composure always came with him, and kindness and patience when interacting with his younger brothers and cousins. All noble and elegant like his father and mother.

“We’re coming~” Answered in union the twins as a hobby, as the genuine core of twins they had.

With Amras’ arrival also came some more elves, adding more to the cheerful and bustling gathering of the day. “Excellent, more have come. I suppose we now have enough people here to start the hunt. I have been awaiting it.” Angrod said to his own, and maybe to the elves close by and the fair and raven-haired duo, with a thrill in his voice. In a light-hearted voice brimming with excitement, he enthusiastically exclaimed to others to prepare and start the main event of the day.

Angaráto then turned to the servants requesting his hunting bow and arrows. “Older brother, hurry up and prepare too.” A big and bright smile showed to his eldest brother when the second son of Finarfin spoke.

“Pityafinwë, we are glad you are finally able to find joy and relaxation in this hunt. Oh eru, lady Nerdanel would be pleased if some of us let her know such a lovely situation today.” Angrod, representing his eldest brother and himself, speaking amusedly with a soft smile and tender eyes now towards the younger elf. “It would be bluntly inappropriate and inconsiderate of us now to remain here and bother our dear twin cousins. Please excuse me and Angrod.” The duo of golden-haired siblings talked right after each other intentionally to not let a chance slide in for any defensive responses from the twins.

“Hey, can you just stop…ugh…with these ridiculous joking. Just don't adopt these nonsense jokes from that stupid fair-haired elf.” Amrod could only shout in defence. “Geez, those jokes again. what so special about us being close then?” Amras complained about their cousin’s “childish behaviour”. Well, whose behaviours here were truly the childish ones?

The presence of his twin, the one whose bond was the closest to him since their birth, lightened his mood and put him in high spirits for the rest of the day.

---

Well, the twin came back to the castle and told this to Nelyo, their dutiful, beloved eldest brother.

“Nelyo, I know there are certain things, within your eldest brother's authority, that you can do so…”

“…Refrain them from telling silly jokes and treat us like children in front of others.” Amrod and Amras, as one of the youngest of the house, of course, complained to the oldest one in the birth order, as it had been a privilege of the twin since Nelyo unconsciously paramountly indulged all six of his brothers.

Our graceful and gentle Nelyafinwë, the eldest grandchild of King Finwë, just smiled indulgently and lovingly towards his youngest brothers.
