Lisa heard the key in the door as Carla let herself into the flat. Lisa was sitting on the sofa as she looked up at Carla and said “hey love” in greeting. Carla came over for a quick kiss on Lisa cheek on the way to the kitchen to open a bottle of wine.
“Darling, would you like a glass? Yes, Thanks” said Lisa. Carla poured both glasses and came to sit by Lisa on the sofa. Carla started to speak to Lisa. “Did you enjoy your day off here at the flat with no one to bother you for a few hours.” Carla laughed as she tickled Lisa.
“I did enjoy it.” stated Lisa “but I may have brain rot from the endless scrolling on my phone today instead of out chasing criminals Carla smiled as she said “you deserve it Lisa. Everyone needs a day to decompress, even superheroes.”
Lisa and Carla continued to sit in silence. Sipping their wine and just enjoying each other’s company. After a few minutes Lisa looked up at Carla and said “You are so beautiful.” Carla gave a small smile and said “thank you.”
Lisa said “Is that all you’re going to say?” “I don’t know Lisa. What did you expect me to say?”
“I’m not sure” said Lisa “as I said earlier I have spent too much time on my phone today and I came across an article titled WHAT WOMEN NEED IN A RELATIONSHIP.” As Lisa glanced at Carla she noticed she was rolling her eyes. “What?” said Lisa. Carla said “I can’t believe you decided to read an article like that.” “Well, I was kind of bored.” She chuckled.
Lisa continued explaining about the article. “Anyway it stated that women need to know that they are attractive to their partners and I realized I never say anything like that to you even though I think it every time I look at you and I wondered if it was something you needed to hear.”
Carla got a serious look on her face and turned to face Lisa. She had been quiet listening to Lisa explain her thoughts and she hesitated to respond because she wasn’t sure how Lisa would react but she knew she needed to say it.
“Lisa, I have had men tell me in the past that I was beautiful. It was usually because they wanted something from me. Maybe sex, maybe to control me or maybe they just wanted some eye candy on their arm. There was always some ulterior motive to the phrase. Nothing sincere. Just what they could get from me in the moment.”
“Lisa, I don’t need those words. They are nice to hear on occasion, but they are not what I need to hear from you.”
Lisa was looking in Carla’s eyes and said “What do you need from me Carla?” “ What I need to know Lisa is that I am enough.” Carla’s voice started to break. “I need to know me and our makeshift family that includes Roy, Ryan and Bobby along with you and Betsy are enough. That we are enough to make you stay forever. This is all I need.”
Carla was really trying hard not to cry but she wanted no needed Lisa to understand where she was coming from. She was all in. She needed to know that Lisa was there too. “Lisa, my love, are we enough for you to stay? Not just today but forever?”
Lisa reached up and wiped the tears off Carla’s cheeks and wrapped her arms around her neck. “Carla, I love you. I tried so hard not to fall for you. I thought I didn’t deserve to fall in love again. I thought maybe I just got lucky the first time but you are everything I never knew I needed. You are all I need. Just you and I am going nowhere.”
Carla smiled through her tears and began to speak. “My darling Lisa. You and our family. This is it. This is what I want. Nothing else for the rest of our lives.” They both began to laugh as they moved closer to each other. Their lips met in a sweet kiss. A promise. A commitment that they were each others and nothing was ever going to get in the way of that.
