Chapter 1: That Strange Feeling

Chapter Text

There was a peacefulness that was brought by walking through the rows of trees. Only the sounds of the wind rusting in the leaves, the nearby shuffles of the animals, and of course Mika asking various questions about what materials they should gather.

It’s been about an hour since they left their now established base, trying to figure out how to actually get settled down and comfortable. Mya close behind Mika; ever the follower she has always been.

“Hey, are you still walking back there?” Mika shouts over their shoulder in a teasing manner of course. “yeah, yeah … not lost yet.” Mya scoffs as the other chuckles.

The sun has started to set which brings a cold chill through the air. Neither are in a rush and don’t feel the need to move back in the direction of home. Though, Mya now walks beside Mika to feed off a bit of their warmth. They run warm Mya’s noticed. She tends to keep her distance incase she makes them uncomfortable, but the chances she gets a bit more bold the change in temperature is nice.

Mika notices the other pick up pace and move closer. They know Mya gets anxious about being in the way or overstepping. They’ll never understand why though. They’re friends, the closest friend either of them has ever had. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with a bit of closeness right?

To lessen the over thinking Mika decides to speak up. “So, I was thinking about food sources and what would you think about a giant wheat farm? Just the biggest farm you’ve ever seen!” Mya, startled from the sudden talking, jumped a bit. “What? Oh yeah I think that would be very useful. You’d never run out of that bread you love oh so much.” She sees a rapid nod beside her. “Yes that’s exactly what I was thinking; wow you know me so well.”

They stare at each other for a heavy second then start giggling. Neither really knowing what’s so funny, but that’s kind of just how they work. Mika glad that the mood is less heavy and Mya remembering again that they are friends and can have moments like this.

“God i can’t believe how many times you got lost. We were literally only gone for like 2 hours” Mika nudges Mya’s shoulder as they both sit on the edge of the stairs.

Their favorite spot to wind down at the end of a long day collecting materials and planning.

“Oh fuck off, it’s not my fault you run off without a second thought” Mya rolls her eyes. “I’m going to have to attach a leash to you or something it’s getting ridiculous.”

They both break out into another fit of giggles for the second time today. Always finding a way to be on the same wavelength when it comes to something that really isn’t that humorous.

Mika speaks up after they both get all their laughs out, “Oh Mya, have i ever told you how much I love you?”

Mya freezes at this because no matter how many times they say that phrase to each other it hits her in the same spot in her chest. Almost as if she can feel her own heart beating out of her chest.

Realizing she should probably say something. “Uh yeah you say that quite a bit.” Yeah good job, definitely said with so much confidence.

Mya decides to take a glance at the one beside them. That feeling of their heart sporadically beating not yet slowing. The wind rustles and sends a quiet shiver over both of them. Not one daring to look away, being able to look into each other’s eyes for as long was given to them.

After what feels like eternity, Mya unfortunately breaks the silence. “I’m getting quite tired, uhm … I think i’m going to start getting ready for bed.”

Breaking away from the moment, Mika blinks. “Right yeah I should too.”

Mya stands first already prepared to flee the scene. Not sure why she’s so on edge considering the fact this sit close on the steps almost every night. There was just something different about this night, hell even the whole day had some kind of mysterious tension to it.

“Well goodnight and I do love you too.” Mya speaks after standing. Now it’s Mika’s turn to feel the rapid beating of their heart.

“Goodnight Mya.” They reply back while looking up at the other. Not really realizing that neither are going to sleep very easily that night.
